One of the problems with most MLM companies is that the MLM website that they provide you when you join isn't all that great. Sometimes they're just all out terrible.
If they're expecting you to send people there, "they must be out of their mind" is what you're thinking. You're right, and very seldom should you send anyone right to that page if it's terrible. Basically doing so means you're wasting a visitor that you could have better converted had you sent them to your own page.
Your page should be one that first sells you as a mentor. It should sell you as someone that they should want to work with, and second sells your opportunity. In general the opportunity and/or products behind that opportunity mean very little to your prospects. But YOU mean a great deal to them...or at least you should create that atmosphere.
3 Essentials to an Effective MLM Website...
1) Capturing Visitor Information... There's nothing more important than capturing the information of your website visitors. It's what makes the difference between a visitor and a lead. What would you rather have? A lead of course!
Therefore, what this entails is putting an opt-in form on your site, which is connected to an auto responder service. Aweber or Get Response is the best, but you can Google for others if you like of course.
You'll have to give away something of value to get people to leave their information. This is usually in the form of a short report, an E-course, or full on Ebook for free. Also videos and audios are good and create a huge bonding effect for your prospects.
Once you have their info then you'll want to add as many auto-response messages to send them as you can because generally nobody is going to join your opportunity or buy your products until your 5th to 7th contact. Some will, but the majority WILL NOT! Besides that the more you have, the more automated your system is.
2) Valuable Content... This is very important. If your site isn't just a squeeze page (one where the sole reason for it is to get visitor info) then the information that you provide on your site should be of high value. It should also give some distinct insights to your personality and who you are.
Your content is what is going to give you credibility, and make your prospects see that YOU are the one that can help them, and are the one that they want to work with.
But it's also got to be personal. Write as if you're talking to one person, as if writing a letter to a friend. Do this in your auto-responder messages as well. This creates a bond that makes the person feel as thought they know you personally.
Most important - give useful information that will hopefully create a result for them of some sort.
3) Simple Design... I see so many people create sites that look like someone threw up on the page. It's just a headache to look at a site with moving animations, audios turning on automatically, and a bunch of different colors.
Your best bet is to use a 1 or 2 column design with tabs on the top that make it easy to navigate the page. If possible, your opt-in box should be on the top right hand corner. For ease of design using a WordPress blog is probably your best route, not to mention that the search engines love WordPress.
Use a white, or at least a very light background with black text. Your font should be something very normal that can easily read without too many curly Q's like Times, Georgia, or Verdana.
Using a nice picture of yourself where you're smiling will increase response. People like nice friendly faces, and respond well to them even in print.
Basically the key is simplicity...
As long as your website has these elements then the chance of people responding to it are going to be pretty good. Responding means that they're giving you their information, and contacting you (by the way, don't forget the contact info which should be on each and every page, and very easy to find).
