When a website is visited why is the person logging on? Is it for the beautiful colors? Or is it for something specific? Ninety-nine percent of the time when someone logs onto a website it is because he/she needs something specific. The only way that person is going to find that item is by having great website content.
Website content is the information that is displayed on the page. Nothing can be a substitute for good website content. It should be informative, well written, a decent length, and searchable keywords. If you are unsure what qualifies as good content just check out the following tips.
First off your website content needs to inform your visitors about your site. If this is a business site you are going to want to sell them on your business. The thing is it doesn't need to sound too much like an advertisement. Explain what it is your company does, list some of the things you offer, and give links to each area within the text so if, while they are reading, they come across the perfect item they can go straight there. There are ways to make your site advertise for you without sounding like a used car sales man. Having informative writing can do just that.
No matter how informative you make your website if it reads like a first grader wrote it you'll lose visitors. This doesn't mean that you have to write on a graduate degree level. A good rule of thumb, write it as if you were addressing a group of high school seniors. That doesn't mean use all the teen slang that is so popular but write it on their level. Unless your business is geared to those with advanced degrees many of your clients will only have a high school education, so this is a good starting point for website content.
Next make sure that your information is a decent length. While there might be some areas of your site that you need to keep the descriptions short and sweet, but it still needs to be a good length. For a main page of a site a nice length for a description is around 400 words. This will give you plenty of time to give a little information on your company in general, a little information on your products or services, and maybe even a little room to soft sell why you are the company they should go with. You can leave the history of the company and its CEO to the About Us page, but on the front page you might hint at it.
Website content should have searchable keywords in it so that the site itself can be found easier. How do you do that? Well if you have a company that sells video games then that might be your key words "video games" variations might be "games" and "gamers". Specific products should have a page dedicated to them. You shouldn't overdo it on the keyword in your write-up but you should make it at least one percent of the words on your page. For example if your keywords are "video games" and you have information of 400 words you should use those keywords around 4 times total.
By being informative, well written, a decent length with searchable keywords you can help grow your business. Next time you log onto a site take a moment to look at what their site looks like. Can you find your way around or do you get aggravated and leave? Then log on to your site and see if your website content is easy or aggravating.
