It is that easy. Once you have made first contact, you can ask them to connect you with the philanthropic arm of their company. Most large companies have an entire department dedicated to donations, public relations, and separate departments for recruitment. You could approach either in your efforts to secure a sponsorship.

If LinkedIn does not have the information you want, then you can always make a list of the companies and try to approach them cold. This approach will likely be less successful than if you already have a leg in the door. You will want to contact the same parts of the company as if you have used a LinkedIn connection, but it may be harder to have your request forwarded correctly if you do not have an inside advocate.
