Communicating to Your Audience Through Online Newsletters - Tips to Informative Newsletters

Here are some tips for informative newsletters that will spark reader action:

Tip #1: First of all, informative newsletters reflect your knowledge of your audience and your understanding of their interests. It's important to know the answers to these questions:
What are your readers' interests? Are you mailing to individuals, or purchasing agents, retail or wholesale, student or teacher, or both?
Why do readers subscribe to your newsletter? For example, if you are a house painter, do readers mostly want to know when you are offering discounts on paint jobs? Or do they expect solid advice about choosing paint brands? What do you promise them when they sign up?
Which newsletters get the highest open rates? The highest click-through rates? Use your email reader reports to learn what generates the most action from readers.

Tip #2: Keep your items brief. Anything over 200 words should be continued on your website. Or, let readers know there are longer articles available on your site. People most often read your online newsletter while scanning their inbox content, and probably will not want to stop and read a long article.

Tip #3: Limit your substantial articles to one, or two, at most. For example, if you are a gift shop offering a Valentine's Day special, include a 200-word piece on the beautiful Kashmir scarves you have for sale. Make the rest very short highlights about other items, and prices, and continually direct your reader to your website.

Tip #4: Provide one or two links to web pages or articles by other people or businesses that will be of interest to your reader. It's true that such links take the reader away from your online newsletter, but they will be grateful for the useful information.

For example, if you are a craft store, and come across a web site about a mosaic gallery with some gorgeous new pieces, your reader will appreciate the information and may also begin thinking about purchasing mosaic materials from you.

Tip #5: Use colors sparingly, and make sure there is some white space around your words and your images. Readers' eyes need a break from endless rows of letters. Graphics and colors are important in resting the eye before it moves back to reading again. They also help to make a first impression: "This is well-designed, and not demanding that I read and read and read. I think I'll pay attention." This is how you want your reader to respond!
