There are plenty of people who are the picture of organization at their workplace but they come home to a life filled with clutter and disorganization. They may find themselves with unnecessary late fees on unpaid bills, difficulty finding things they have purchased, or running around in circles late for every event they attend. If they are a co-worker of yours, you may be surprised to find out they live this way. If it is you, you probably hide in your home in shame. It can be tough to entertain and feel comfortable having others over to visit if your home is in shambles. A great place to begin organizing your home is by putting together a home office. This allows you to at least get a grip on important paperwork like bills and tax documents. Even if the dishes pile up or the laundry goes unfolded, you will at least be able to save yourself time and money when doing important household work. Putting together a home office is easy. There are just a few supplies you need and you can make the space comfortable and inviting. Begin the process by organizing your office equipment. Find a place for your computer, printer, and fax machine that enables you to use them without setting things up every time you need them. Make sure they are on a sturdy surface and purchase any supplies you may need to keep them operational. It is a good idea to have a backup ink refill or inkjet cartridge so you do not run out when you need it most. Once the electronic side of things is in order, you can move on to papers and files.
To determine what filing system will work best for you, sort through all of your loose papers. Decide what needs to be kept and what can be shredded or recycled. Be sure to destroy anything with your name, address, or personal information on it. After you have decided what needs to be kept on hand, organize it into categories that make sense for you. A good idea is to keep everything together by year. In the current year, divide it by month, or use another system. You can use subcategories if necessary. For instance, you may create a file for health related information and then further break it down by family member. You may want to take a bit of time to think about what system is going to work for you, but choose a system that makes sense. There are no rules as long as it makes sense to you. Once you have your computer set up and your files organized, you are well on your way to an organized office space. All that is left to do is to spruce up the space and make it comfortable. Add family photos, some comfortable seating, a few decorative items, and anything else you can think of to make the space your own. You may even want to use this space for books, photo albums, or craft materials. A home office is a great idea.
