Goal Setting - 7 Steps For the Online Marketer
It's widely agreed that a good format for setting goals is one which follows the SMART principle; Specific goals Measurable goals,
 Achievable goals,
 Realistic goals and
Timely goals (or setting a time limit for reaching the goal.) And while the above formula is invaluable, I want to focus on the 7 steps to actually achieving your goals, steps which the world's top performers in sport and industry use to accomplish all they want. Step 1: Create a Dream List. Doing this is great fun. Get yourself a pad and pen and let your imagination run wild. Think of all the things you would want to have if money were no object and all the things you would do if you knew you couldn't fail. Think of all the places you'd love to go and all the accolades you'd like to win in your life of entrepreneurship. Don't hold back, don't be ashamed, just write what comes into your heart until you can't think of anything else. Connecting with your innermost desires is a very powerful and motivating technique which will fill you with energy to take the next steps in this goal setting exercise. Step 2: Create your 'Why List' Now, on a separate piece of paper, work your way down the dream list and write down 'why' you want these particular things, what they will do for you and others, and what they will mean for you, emotionally, socially and spiritually. You'll find that much of what you've written on your dream list won't really matter to you, and seemingly trivial goals will mean a lot. Creating a 'Why' list is our way of taking our dreams and justifying them in the context of what matters most in life. If the why isn't great enough, the dream will lack power. But once you connect the dream with the 'Why' in a way that is harmonious and inspiring you'll set yourself up for great Home Business success. As you complete this process, cross off the less important items on our dream list, so that you're left with.... Step 3: Your refined list. Things are probably looking a little messy on your pad right now, so why not transfer all the dreams that made the 'Why' selection onto a fresh sheet of paper. Write each one down on the new sheet leaving a few lines between each one in preparation for the next step, which is; Step 4: Add detail. Now that you have your refined list of goals draughted up, it's time to flesh out each goal or desire, to make them more real in your mind's eye. You might include on this list the following: Your dream home; What's the layout? Start from the front door and work your way round. How many bedrooms does it have? What exercise and entertainment facilities does it have? Etc. Your dream wardrobe might include; Your casual collection
 Formal collection
Party range and so on. Your dream car's details might include; The options list
 Color
 Upholstery and
Engine size. Doing this will force you to impress upon your subconscious mind a greater sense of reality to your goals and start you creating a non physical version of what you want. And to go one step further, this exercise is bolstered by the next step: Step 5: Reinforce the goal. With your refined list in hand, and all it's colorful detail, it's time to PHYSICALLY see each one of the things you want - if this is possible. So if your goal is to drive a top-of-the-line- Mercedes SL, it's time to get down to the local dealer and take it for a test drive. By experiencing what it's like to actually sit behind the wheel, fiddle with the controls, watch the roof fold back and smell the leather seats, you're bringing the fulfillment of that goal closer to reality. Do the same thing with each goal. Go and view the luxury home. Take a trip down Rodeo Drive or Knight's Bridge in London to see the luxury hand bags, clothes and watches. If you aspire to owning a helicopter, book a flight in one. By taking this step, you are saying to your subconscious mind 'I can do this.' Step 6: Action Plan. Once you've made your refined list more tangible - by actually experiencing what it would be like to have them fulfilled, it's time to make an action plan. Your action plan should summarize; What you want
 When you want it
How much it will cost you and
What you need to do to afford it. At this point you may need to measure your goals against the S.M.A.R.T acronym to make sure that you're doing things the right way. But if you are, you'll be well on your way to achieving your dreams. That leaves us with the 7th step. Step 7: Constantly assess your progress. Have your refined list and action plan somewhere where you can easily access it and check each day or each week, to see if you're taking the necessary steps towards achieving your dreams.Marc Francis is a wealth coach, author and television presenter who helps individuals reach their goals and create personal wealth.
