The guys behind the internet success, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, started out with an idea "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful". The search engine started out as "BackRub" but was renamed as Google in 1997. The popular name actually originates from the number 1's mathematical term which is followed by a hundred zeroes. This signifies how vast and infinite the internet is and represents the wide collection of information found on the internet.
The computerized version of the official logo was created in 1998. Sergey Brin used GIMP, a free graphics editing program.
