Have You Learned to Give Up?

Multilevel marketing can be an unforgiving business. You have tried your best over and over again, but still haven't reached the success you want. So, you give up. Maybe you try again, but, after so many failures, you are sure this one won't work either. This is called "learned helplessness." Learned helplessness is a well-known term in psychology. According to Wikipedia, it is "a perceived absence of control over the outcome of a situation."*

The key word in that definition is perceived. We've all heard the various versions of you are what you think. What you think is very important because it often controls your actions. Maybe you go through the motions of trying to recruit, but your perception is that you will fail. No amount of training or pep talk can change that perception. Of course, this perception directly controls your actions and you do indeed fail.

Another important component of learned helplessness is that, even when placed in a situation where things can change and person can remove themselves from the unpleasantness, they don't do it. You perceive that you will fail, you do fail, and thus, when presented with a new idea, improved products, extra training, or any other help, you have learned that things don't work, so you give up before you even try.

Experiencing significant failure a number of times can be difficult to overcome. It is hard work to overcome the perception that you will fail again. It is even harder work to keep going. Recognizing that your past failures have caused you to develop this learned helplessness can go a long way to helping you overcome your past. If you have experienced failure and continue to experience failure no matter what you do, it may be time to step back and take a look at why. Are you letting your perception of your past failures influence how you talk to people? Are you enthusiastic about what you are doing?

Work with your trainer. If you are recruiting on the phone, go through a mock recruiting call. The trainer may hear things in your voice that you aren't even aware of. If you are recruiting face-to-face, practice is even more important. You can't talk to someone about an opportunity if you not even convinced you can do it yourself. Your body language and subtle things about the way you talk will give you away. A good trainer can help you overcome some of these issues and make this business a success!
