For example... allowing and encouraging your readers to comment, and share your content is one of the very BEST ways to leverage the "crowd" to build your community, extend your reach and build your business WITHOUT having to write an extra word. (and strictly through word of mouth advertising to boot)
2 - They are Search engine friendly
A blog is simply a GREAT tool for search engine optimization... period. They are, or at least should be updated often, and by definition are chronologically oriented in a current event, new worthy kind of way that's been a pretty important factor in all of the recent updates made by the search engines in how they prioritize what is most relevant NOW. If you can leverage what's going in your industry, or even in the world around us all into your blog posts and content creation process, you can PIGGYBACK off of real NEWS to get surprisingly fast positioning in the search results on some pretty important phrases... especially if you are strategically thinking about your business, and your brand in the broader context of what is happening in both the WORLD, and your "local" marketplace as well.
