How to Build Relationships With Social Networking For Online Internet Marketing

And What Not to do When You Receive a Friend Request on a Social Networking Site.

Look out! Here they come again.... You know just who I mean. You send a friend request and you get beat over the head with their business opportunity. No "Hi", "Hello", or even a "Howdy". Now you really didn't get hit on the head but your inbox is full and you mouse is heading towards the delete button.

Over the last several weeks, I have invited several people to be my friend on one of the top social networking sites. Unfortunately, there are the biz-op lurkers out there that are just waiting for someone new to spam with their biz-op. These lurkers spam unsuspecting souls out there who desire to network, make new friends and build relationships. So, let's put this in perspective.

Spamming people who have kindly sent you a friend request is just about like showing up for a blind date naked. It accomplishes nothing other than sending people running for the hills! Not a very good way to start a relationship - It will leave you standing alone and cold.

Yes, I do believe in love at first site but if my husband had asked me to marry him on the first date, I would have asked him to leave. That would have been just a bit weird. I would wondered just what kind of wacko he was and never taken the time to get to know him.

Don't make these same mistakes. Don't rob yourself of the opportunity to get to know others. The internet is a wide and amazing world full of interesting people to meet. So, take the time to get to know them. Don't make them scratch you of their friend list.

Instead become someone they look forward to getting to know. They look forward to your messages. Here are a few tips that can help you build these invaluable relationships.


Get to know them by asking questions (comment on common interests).
Share something of value (an article, and e-book, a video).
Start a dialog (ask about their family, their hobbies).
Become involved when you find you have common interests. (I love hiking too. I have a dog too.)
Comment on their pictures. (What a great smile. What a cute dog.)


People will buy from or join with people they know. People they like. People they trust. It is all about the relationship. Give them a chance to get to know you. Get to know them.... Then they will ask "What is it you do?"

On social networking sites it is important to remember what it is that you like. What do you dislike? If you don't like being spammed - then chances are others are not going to like getting your spammy messages either. As one of my mentors always says, "Would your Gramma be proud?". If not - Don't hit the send key!
