How to Find a Mentor - And How to Get the Best From Them

There seems to be a common problem in that once people choose a mentor, they then have the expectation that the mentor will teach them everything they need to know. They have unrealistic expectations, and are setting themselves up for disappointment.

The student needs to be very proactive with the mentor, and define what skills they are hoping to learn. Then to actively ask ongoing questions which will prompt the correct education from the mentor. This is quite often not the case; I have observed many students complain that they are not being taught what they had hoped, and they are taking a passive position, not actually letting the mentor know what it is that they need to learn.

Before choosing a mentor, it's best to define exactly what you wish to learn from the mentor and not to expect anything else. The mentor is only human, and will not be perfect, so choose the mentor based on proven results they have achieved in an area of expertise you wish to learn, but don't expect to learn skills in other areas from them.

One mentor is unlikely to provide you with all the knowledge and skills you need to acquire, so it's advisable to have different mentors for learning different skills.

Over the last fifteen years or so, I have chosen many mentors to help myself learn different real estate strategies, share trading strategies, internet marketing skills, and general business skills.

Generally the mentors are coaching other people as well as myself in the way of coaching programs, which I am very happy to pay for to fast track my learning.

When your mentor has given you tasks to complete, give him (her) feedback on how you went with the task, what you achieved or didn't achieve, so that he can work with you to continually adjust and improve.

By approaching your ongoing education in this proactive manner, you will get far more help from your mentors than taking a passive role, and will achieve your goals and outcome faster.
