The reviews left on the web about the company will probably have some bitter ex associates venting because they were too lazy, or they may have a legit gripe. Do the testimonials seem real? Can you get in touch with real people? Some companies like to hide behind a name while some are transparent.
They should have a time frame to get most or all of your money back if it doesn't work out for you. They should have a large knowledge base even if they are selling physical products. With the information age here and kicking, people can choose what they want. If you don't see good copy ( writing), it can leave a bad impression.
Patents and trademarks here and abroad are also key to a company that plans to have any type of longevity. With out this, they are sitting ducks, waiting to be knocked off by the new cheaper, flashier product. Check to see if they are in any magazines or newspaper articles. Read the compensation plan and the bios of the top leaders.
Check the BBB but don't have that be your only source. Since you read this far, you deserve credit for being a good researcher. Last but perhaps most important, you need a company with great leadership. Leaders are important because eventually all companies run into logistical nightmares. How they deal with that speaks louder than anything else. If they have grace under pressure to weather the storms, go do your due diligence and trust your gut.
