If you rely on your website to sell a product or generate leads you should always be striving to increase the amount of traffic to your site. More traffic should lead to more sales and therefore more profit. The tips below are a handful of ideas that could help you to increase the traffic to your site.

1) Offer free, original and quality content.

� The free aspect is pretty self explanatory. Most websites are free to visit. Original content is very important. The visitors that land on your site should be offered information that they have not seen before. Do not cobble information from other website. It will not read correctly and your visitors will be distracted. Not only will it not read right Google has quite sophisticated software that can spot an unoriginal website. This will effect your reputation and therefore your page rank.

� Provide regular updates. You should aim to update you site 2 or 3 times a week. This will keep it fresh for regular visitors and encourage them to come back and to recommend your site to others. Parts of your site could rotate or change at longer periods. Maybe your products are seasonal, so you could update as the weather changes. Aim some of your content towards the next event on the calendar, such as Christmas or Halloween. You should also find that your website becomes more relevant as the event gets closer as more people will be searching for your seasonal products or services.

� If you hate writing you could outsource the articles. Articles start for about $5. However who knows your business better than you. I would advise that you have a go first before you look to someone else. You might surprise yourself. You may actually enjoy it. I would only advise outsourcing if you really do not have time, or are really that bad.

� Every so often visit the website as though you were a customer. Go through and check grammar and spelling. If your website does not read correctly this will reflect badly on the products or services that you are offering.

� Make sure that all the tags are in place and that all your links are working correctly. Make sure they are not leading to a dead end.

3) Obtain backlinks to your site

� Exchange links with other websites that are closely related to your site. Think about the relevance that their information has to the products or services that you are offering. Will your customers appreciate clicking through to this other site?

� Try to check out the site before hand. What is their reputation. You do not want to link to a site that Google does not like. It will drag your reputation down and reduce your page rank.

� Do not over do it. Too many links will distract the visitor and Google will spot what you are doing and penalise you.

4) When you are constructing your site and writing its content focus on the keywords that surround your industry.

� Think about the main keyword that your website relates to. Enter this keyword into Google Keyword Tool. This will give you a list of terms that Google thinks are relevant to your keyword. Use these to write content. That way when people search for related terms your website is more likely to be found.

� Make sure that the keywords that you choose to write around flow within the text. Do not just write to squeeze in keywords so that you rank higher. You may attract more visitors but they will not understand what you are talking about.

� Do not insert keywords into graphics. Google does not recognise graphics such as Flash or Javascript.

� Insert keywords into "Meta Tags" These are the pieces of code that the visitor does not see but Google does. There is not quite so much emphasis on Meta Tags as there once was but it's still worth looking at.

5) Participate on online message boards.

� Answer questions that are posted within your field.

� Become an expert; someone who people turn to gain free information and advice.

� As big as the world wide web is, it can seem very small when you focus in on particular niches and markets. Especially if your market is geographical.

6) Give stuff away.

� Produce an ebook and allow people to download it. Let people also give it away. Make sure that your website is clearly visible within the ebook. This will subject your information to many people. Again, the more original and relevant your ebook is the more people will desire it.

� Run competitions. A free competition will always entice people to your site. Use message boards as mentioned above to promote it.

� Offer free samples. A free demonstration of your product or service will often grab peoples attention.

7) Be patient.

� It takes time for search engines to index changes to your website.

� Continue to implement the tactics mentioned above and you will start to see the difference in your visitor count.

� The more tactics that you use the greater the multiplied effect will be. It will definitely have the snowball effect.
