Make Your Website Work For You!

Previously in my writings, I have talked about how to improve your search engine ranking position by optimising your website both "on page" and "off page" for key search phrases. In addition, the site must be optimised to be able to pick up the long tail of key search phrases that can make the difference between success and failure for a small business.

This aside, I would like to discuss the techniques that have worked for me in the world of online business. First of all, if this article were an attempt to sell my services to the general public, the odd stalwart would have trickled through to the end, but in general, most visitors would have switched off after the obligatory eight to ten seconds. This is roughly the time that it takes for an average member of the general public to asses whether or not your site is worth visiting. If you haven't given them what they need to see, then you're history!

So how do we entice people to read more, to stay longer and above all, to make a purchase, or a telephone call to ask for more information. My experience has led me to believe that we need three mechanisms. All three need to be present and I've found that the absence of any one makes the whole process much more difficult.

The first mechanism that I tend to use in abundance is the 100% money back guarantee. Reinforce the process with a nice, juicy logo strategically placed on the home page, a picture is worth a thousand words as they say. The second is the all important "Ask A Question" button - to help to build relationships with visitors. The final element would be what's called link bait - i.e. a mechanism to entice visitors to your site and to link to the site for future reference.
