Rethinking Your Home Business Advertising

I'd like to share a story with you. For the last several months, I've been receiving a daily email from a site where I signed up. Each email comes with some advertising attached to it.

While I pretty much ignore the ads, there must be some part of my brain that is seeing them. After seeing one particular ad at least a dozen times, I actually read it. After reading it, I actually clicked the link in the ad. I did not purchase the book being offered, but I did read the ad and click the link.

I decided to email the owner of the site, the person selling this book. This person is paying for advertising. I am guessing they wish to make sales. The email I sent said everything I've explained above. I told the owner how I'd seen the ad over and over again and finally one day clicked. I told her how impressed I was that she was so consistent, consistent enough that I clicked her ad.

After sending her the email, I then sent her a Facebook friend request along with a personal message.

Guess what? I never heard back from her. Not only did she not respond to my email, but she also never answered me on Facebook. I have a large number of friends on Facebook, so I'm not certain if she did or did not accept the request. But I'm certain she never responded to my message.

There is no way to know if I might have purchased her book in the future. There is no way to know if I would've enjoyed the book and referred others to make the same purchase. Based on her lack of response to me, I'm fairly certain I'll never buy the book.

If you're paying money to advertise, if you're advertising to complete strangers, one way to stand out from the crowd is to be human. Invest a few minutes to answer an email. Invest a few minutes to respond on Facebook. Go a step further and invest a few minutes to initiate a conversation that may down the road lead to a sale.

Many of us invest a lot of time and thought into our marketing campaigns. Many of us choose our words and target market very carefully. I really believe that forgetting the human aspect of advertising is a costly mistake.

Over the years, I've written companies both with praises and also with an occasional complaint. Those companies that take the time to acknowledge my message are the companies I try to give my business to.

It takes under a minute to lose a potential customer by ignoring them. It takes under 2 minutes to respond and possibly have a lifelong customer. How will you invest your time?
