There have been several times when I questioned myself and asked 'Is this really worth it, am I ever going to get anywhere with this?' One of the obvious answers is if you just throw your hands up in the air and say 'That's it, I've had enough'; of course you're going to fail, perhaps without ever having put in a valiant effort. I've been at it a few months now, yes only a few months and I am beginning to see a better trend. We must stay realistic as to what our ultimate goals are; as for myself I only want to make enough so I can be done with my day job. I don't aspire to become a millionaire, I do aim to remove myself from working for someone else and being able to support myself comfortably with a home based business. So, forget the hype that you are spoon fed and get into the trenches with the rest of us and start your research; be courageous.

Don't put all of your eggs in one basket, set out a few bread crumbs here and there, experiment with different techniques and methods of advertising. As we learned, types of online data entry jobs usually require you, the online worker, to:

Have available specific types of equipment, network capabilities and software.
Set up, describe and maintain a data security and data protection process to ensure that data is kept private and carefully managed.
Demonstrate your capacity for accuracy by providing work history and/or samples that illustrate the quality of your data management work.

An even larger number of data entry and data processing projects can be done from home than can be done online. Now we're going to discuss the 'drop and deliver' type of data entry jobs that you also can do primarily from home.

The difference - these jobs involve the 'dropping and delivering' of hard copy data, or a portable disk of some type, to and from your home. This can happen in a variety of ways, depending upon your employer, you, your location, and the mutual arrangement made between the two of you.

GETTING THE DATA 'TO AND FRO'

If your potential client is local or somewhat close by, you and they can agree upon a mutually convenient time, place, and system for securing the raw data and returning completed work. Ask yourself: "Am I preparing myself in order to take a job that will pay me? OR "Am I purchasing software that may or may not lead to my being able to find work later?"

Some steps you might want to take before you invest any cash in a venture that may or may not be legitimate:

Check with your local Better Business Bureau. If your client is nearby, the BBB should have a track/performance record on file. If your potential customer is at a distance, your local BBB can direct you to the proper source.

Ask for references - any reputable company should be happy to share a roster of other satisfied data entry workers who are earning money working for this organization.

Spend some time surfing the web - usually there is a blog or a user group that posts comments, opinions, and valuable insight about your potential organization.

Do a Google search using the name of the company, and sift through the results for any red flags.

Read the fine print when you agree to the "Terms and Conditions." I know this can be a tedious, and sometimes overwhelming chore. But remember - the company is protecting itself from any liability. You are the only one who is protecting you!

WHO ARE YOU ANYWAY...?

...and what do you have to offer? Before you embark on your home based data entry hunting expedition, make sure you inventory your 'gear.' You'll need the following 'tools' to ensure success:

A reliable vehicle. (Have wheels, can and will pick up and deliver!)

MS Office (and knowing how to use it) is always a tried and true workhorse. In particular, refresh or update your skills using MS Access, the database software.

Much more than you can imagine!

My mother is an 89-year-old grandmother and she likes to be called anything but "old!" I find her perspectives on life can always be applied to my online biz.

She lives in a cozy apartment in an assisted living facility and I was talking to her on the phone recently. Soon into the conversation, she said, "You know, sometimes I just get tired of all the old people."

I knew what she meant.

It had nothing to do with age, as my Mom is probably one of the oldest in the place. It had everything to do with their mindset.

You see, my Mom is very young-at-heart. She knows that the people you hang out with are the ones you become like. She'd rather tell a good joke and share a delicious laugh than hear about any aches and pains. She knows that if you succumb to the negatives, you go downhill pretty quickly.

Try making up a log that you can keep track of what you are doing around the house. You should record on this log the exact time at which you sit down at your work space to start working. You should also include the times you stop your work and start doing things that have nothing to do with your job. This is a good way to figure out when you are actually working and when you are doing other activities around the house.

From this log you should then sit down and make yourself a schedule. Write down this schedule and do your best to follow it on a daily basis. You need to teach yourself that you need to eat at a particular time of day, take a "me" breaks several times a day and these should be on the schedule. Make sure that you include certain chores as well and make sure they are on a set schedule as well. Make sure that you schedule your various phone calls at certain times of the day and only allow yourself to accept calls during certain times of the day, unless of course you have a phone line that is dedicated to your home job. You should also make yourself include deadlines for both your work tasks as well as your chores.

Make sure that your family is more involved around the house. Being at home all day long does not give them the right to run all over you and treat you as if you are not working and you are at their beck and call whenever they need you for something. In fact they should be asked to help out more with the chores and you should make sure that you delegate some of these chores to other members of your family. Now is the time they learn that you are not the only person in the house that is responsible for during chores to keep things running smoothly.

If it gets to a point where you feel things are out of hand and you can afford it, you might want to consider getting yourself a professional housekeeper to come in once a week or come by every other week or so to do so really heavy duty cleaning of your house. This will cut down on you having to worry about everything on top of trying to be successful at your work at home job.
