Many people, with extremely limited resources, consider starting an online business. The emergence of the internet has (somewhat) leveled the playing field for these individuals. Obviously, no one is going to launch another Amazon or eBay for under $500. These businesses require millions. That doesn't mean that a profitable online presence cannot be established on a shoestring budget.
There are several things to consider before getting started. Many people have the misconception of "If you build it, they will come". What you need to know is that it does matter what you sell, how much you sell it for, and how you market it. The internet is not the magical place that many newbies think it is where everyone gets rich and successful. Most new businesses, online and offline fail.
Find your niche market. The prospective businessperson should do research to discover whether or not there is a market for the product or products that is being considered. If no one else is selling these items, that may be because there is not a market for it. Check online marketplaces like eBay, Amazon, Yahoo Shopping, and others to see if anyone else is offering these for sale and for how much.
Another thing to be considered is where you are going to sell. There are many considerations. Most people start by selling on eBay and Amazon. The benefits of these two marketplaces are the exposure your items will receive. Exposure to your items will give you the best chance of selling, and making you money. The downside of these marketplaces is the costs. You will pay to list each item, for listing upgrades like bold and extra pictures, and then you will pay a percentage of the selling price if it sells. You are also limited as to what you can sell, and how your ads appear.
Another choice you will have is to self host your store. This is a little more complicated and will require more technical knowledge. This method gives you complete control over the look and feel of your site, but you will have to drive the traffic to your site yourself. This can be a daunting task, especially for an inexperienced person.
There are many classes and tutorials available to help you learn the basics of the internet and ecommerce. These classes are well worth the minimal cost that is charged for attendance. Learning the ins and outs of selling online will be learned from these classes as well as from experience. In the long run, it will be well worth it. The internet will give you the world as your marketplace.
The internet isn't a magical place where success is a given. It is a vast marketplace where opportunities exist for the businessperson who is willing to work hard and use good business sense.
