Social Networking Groups?

Groups by definition can be a major and very useful component of social media sites. Basically you are forming a social network-within-a-network. You form groups of friends and share photos, discussions, etc all related to the group focus.

However, it seems some features of the FB groups feature intended for ease of use can cause some embarrassing situations for members.

Information about the revisions in the function indicate that users can create groups and add friends to the group with the friends not entirely aware of the groups focus. An example was a recent group formed (as a joke) with a name that�sounded�as if it was associated with a�nation-wide organization that aligns itself with, well, lets just say non�appropriate�activities involving children. Then the folks that started the FB group would add friends and of course the activity was then posted on the wall of the friend so his friends and their connections would see the post, "So-and-so just joined the group *****."

Funny to a point but potentially very embarrassing and maybe worse.

Many smaller niche social networking sites have a groups function that allows you to form a group, join groups, and send invites, but not add friends to those groups. You can also have calendars, discussions, and photo albums dedicated to those groups.

Groups are an alien feature of social networking sites for a lot of people (as are blogs and a lot of other features available at some of these up-and-coming sites), but if you haven't ever participated in groups, you should give it a try.
