Building a Successful Home Based Business While Keeping Your Family Happy Too!
When you are just starting out on online you have to, like any other endeavor, devote a lot of time familiarizing yourself with many new things. The terms word documents, spreadsheets and HTML for example, were unheard of just a few years ago. Unless you could afford the time and money to take evening courses or you were lucky enough to have a job that taught those things you were pretty much on your own to learn them. When I first started selling on the internet five years ago, I used to spend hours browsing the web trying to teach everything required to start an online business. Asking my family to help out was pointless. My husband knew less about computers than I and my kids had no patience to explain it so they just did it for me. During the week, when I was home alone, most of my day hours were devoted to uninteresting but necessary house chores namely cleaning, grocery shopping and laundry among other things. By mid-afternoon I would work maybe one hour on the computer and that was what my children saw when they got home. Seeing me glued to my laptop every afternoon lead them to the conclusion that I was spending my whole day online. The same thing happened when my husband got home from work. Once again after spending a couple of hours prior to his arrival preparing supper and meals for the following day, I would retreat to the computer just prior to his arrival. His reaction? You got it. "Dear, why are you always on the computer"? He just doesn't understand. Trying to explain to your family that you don't spend that much time online is a losing battle. Instead, this is my solution: It is better to do everything in reverse. By this I mean, start off your day doing all your online work. Leave the cooking and cleaning until the afternoon after everyone gets home. So relax, sit on your backyard deck with your laptop and telephone and enjoy the fresh air! Why would you spend the most productive hours of the day on activities that do not bring in any money anyway? (Let alone satisfaction). I have never heard my kids complain to me that I spend too much time cooking or cleaning but me being on the computer for several hours bothers them. Have snacks ready to serve when the kids arrive. If they are less cranky, they may even help with the chores! After dinner, do not open the computer as tempting as it may be. Spend time with your spouse and children and they will appreciate it. Let them retreat to their rooms first. This way they have no reason to complain if you go on the computer as well. I have been working this way for the past several months and it has been working like a charm!
