Get Money Today

I have been writing a lot lately on employment issues, and I have been doing some informal coaching to help folks in my Linked-In group find a job. When I suggested that a woman take a trip to see a CEO about employment, she let me know right then that she was broke, so my advice was useless. (I hate it when women tell me I'm useless.)

That's when I realized that the biggest problem of long term unemployment is a lack of money. Duh! No really. When you don't get a paycheck for months, you burn through your savings, payment deadlines get missed, and then, inevitably you have a minor emergency, like your car breaks.

But that's not the worst thing. When you have no money you can't launch your quest for a good job. You can't afford to fly out to a conference, or drive to a job fair, or even buy lunch so that you can network at Rotary.

So how can you find or earn some money today? It could be that you need to make a car payment or pay your rent. You've been unemployed for several months now, and the bill collectors are hounding you and threatening you with repossession or eviction. Or maybe you need to make a payment to keep your credit score from tanking into the 300's.

There is only one surefire way to get money today.

SELL SOMETHING

Since mankind started bartering with each other, the ability to sell products has been the key to profit and cash flow. The ancient fisherman would come to the dock in the early morning after fishing all night, knowing he had to sell his catch before noon or his fish would begin to rot.

In later years the baker had one day to sell his bread or it became too stale to sell for full price.

Americans' sales abilities started to atrophy in the 50's and 60's when the corporate business model came to prominence. Television and newspaper advertising pushed people into buying mass produced junk, and we lost that survival skill of selling.

But the world has grown weary of advertising, and so the salesman is once again coming into prominence. Newspapers are becoming like stone tablets, artifacts of an earlier age. Television ads are muted at best, or zipped through when a show is played back on the DVR. Why do people buy now?

Personal recommendations and good salesmen.

When was the last time you encountered a really good salesperson? Didn't he or she make you feel like royalty? I bought a couple of suits a few months ago, and I know I paid too much. But the salesman was knowledgeable, had a great sense of style, and made me feel good about buying high quality clothes.

What does this have to do with the unemployed? I want to convince you that the world, both buyers and sellers, is seeking out good sales people. And you can get money today by selling.

Find Items to Sell

We are talking creativity here. From my experience, creativity expands as my checking account contracts. I had a friend named Jim Danielson who could sell an airplane in one day when he was broke. He told me that when he was desperate (out of brandy) he would focus and live on the phone until he sold something. He never owned an airplane. He sold other dealer's inventory, earning two to ten thousand dollars commission.

When I was broke, I could sell a remodeling job for a contractor in one day, collect the deposit check right then, and take home a good chunk of cash. The balance of my commission was then due at the completion of the project. At other times, I would buy a load of surplus aircraft parts on credit, haul them to San Antonio, and sell them for a profit. Either activity could earn me a thousand to four thousand dollars.

The easiest items to sell are usually in your storage unit or garage. Do you really need that second or third car? How about that woodworking lathe and drill press? Or that piece of exercise equipment. (I know, if you sell that, where will you hang your clothes?)

It should be easy to generate 300 to 500 dollars or even multiples of that in a couple of days. But don't take the easy route and under price your merchandise and by all means stay away from the pawn shops. They are some of the fiercest negotiators in the world. Sell one-on-one to the end user for top dollar.

Next, look to your relatives and friends. Do they have unwanted items that they are too busy to sell? Cars, motorcycles, boats, scrap metal, building supplies, hunting equipment, golf carts, and doll collections. Offer to sell them for a 15% or 20% commission.

Last, look to your neighbors, or even strangers. I knew a man who watched the obituaries. The day after the funeral, he would go to the home of the deceased and offer to sell the furniture and/or vehicles on commission for the survivors who lived out of town. He had excellent references and was very successful.

You might know of a cluttered warehouse. Go to the owner and offer to sell the contents and clean up the place making it ready to rent. Earn a commission on sales and more money for cleaning. You take care of the sales and pay your unemployed buddies to man the mops and brooms. It's all about creativity. Where can you give valuable service?

Sell from Someone Else's Inventory

Lots of small stores can't afford a salaried salesman, but will gladly pay you a commission for anything you sell. But be sure that you pick something with a high enough value so that your commission will be worth the effort. Jewelry, collectibles, art, and high end furniture come to mind. But you can use your imagination.

Just because you are out of money does not mean you are out of options. Get out of the house, walk around your city, and see the opportunities out there. Get a couple of thousand dollars quickly so that you can continue stalking your dream job. You'll look good in your new clothes when you go to your next interview. Plus you'll have the confidence from earning good money by your own resourcefulness and hard work.

Start Your Own Micro-Business

Unemployment and underemployment are raging across the United States. People are clamoring for the Federal Government to "do something to create jobs." But the government can't create jobs, only people can.

Most people look for jobs with big companies so they can collect the big paychecks and enjoy a generous benefits package along with the security. But those jobs are going away. More and more companies are outsourcing work that used to be well paid internal positions.

In my profession, many if not most, corporations no longer keep pilots on the payroll. They would rather pay a daily fee to the pilot for flying their corporate jet. So, they fire their pilots, and then hire them for $500 to $900 per day. This sounds like a lot of money, but they save money by freeing the company from paying for health insurance, 401K, liability, and training costs. It also gets rid of some manager and accountant that kept track of those pilots.

This same process is happening with staff writers, maintenance, truck drivers, accountants, and IT managers. So now, these professionals are faced with joining a management company or becoming their own micro-business. Sadly many choose a third option: collecting long term unemployment.

We Americans have become passive risk avoiders. In our desire for security we have forgotten how humans live "in the wild." On my visit to Yellowstone this fall, there are strict regulations against feeding the wildlife. Park rangers know that if the bison and bear get used to free food, they will have a hard time when the tourists leave.

Humans are no different. We need to constantly exercise those self-sufficiency muscles that were given us by our ancestors. Even though our long term goal may be a job with Mega Corp, Inc., we need to be out in the economy making our own way. This will better prepare us for that job, and it will pay the rent and the grocery bills until Mega Corp calls.

How does one get out in the economy? I say start your own Micro-Business.

I've had so many of my unemployed friends ask me, "What type of business should I start?" I don't know what would work for you. But I do know that humans are inventive. Sometimes it takes a shortfall of cash to awaken that creative gene.

Unemployed accountants can do books for small businesses, unemployed writers can re-write company websites, salesmen can sell.

So don't be afraid. Get out and start your own micro-business. Start a one person operation with little or no money invested. But you will have to invest lots of ingenuity and hard work.

An unemployed man came knocking on my door several years ago. He was dressed poorly, almost in rags. He told me that he was a recovering alcoholic and that he had just started a lawn mowing business. "I would like to mow your yard, sir. I charge $15."

"Okay," I said.

"Do you have a lawn mower?" he asked. I was stunned.

"You don't have a mower?"

"No sir. I'll need to borrow yours." I laughed for a long time, pleased with this man's audacity.

"Yeah, it's in the back shed." Well he mowed my lawn and did a good job. Then he asked if he could rent my mower for other jobs in the neighborhood. Each day, this guy went from door to door getting jobs, then came back to my house and pushed my mower to each different yard. He paid me five dollars per job.

In less than a month, the guy had paid me enough to buy myself a new mower, better than before. The man worked his way up to some nicer clothes and his own mower. I soon moved to another city and lost track of this man. But what a lesson he taught me.

If a recovering alcoholic dressed in rags and without a dime can start his own business, so can you. Use your imagination. Are you a good handyman? Do you know plumbing or wiring? Go out and sell your services. I've known ex-bankers who put together borrowers and lenders for a consulting fee. Others buy stuff at garage sales and sell it on e-bay.

I know one woman who was divorced and about to lose her home to foreclosure. For just a few dollars, she made a deal with a florist to buy all the flowers that were too old for him to sell retail. She arranged the flowers in small bouquets, and then went out and sold them on the street corner to men driving home from work.

"Take your wife some flowers. Surprise her tonight!" she would call out. In just a month she made enough to cover her back house payments. She had to stop for the winter, because it got too cold, but she says she'll be back.

Stop at almost any warehouse and offer to clean up and sweep, and some owner will jump at your offer. If you are mechanically inclined, go to any operator of machinery and offer to clean his machines and do preventive maintenance.

You have to get out of your house and look for work. Stop being passive, thinking that sending out resumes will get you a job. Reach down deep and reawaken those instincts that help us survive in the "wild".

Work at Home - Set Yourself Up For Success

Working at home can be a great way to spend more time with your family or can be a great way to make loads of money. Sure, there are perks when you work at home, like waking up when you want, not having a boss breathing down your neck, and spending more time with the kids (or the dog), but realistically it's about the money. Most people that work from home make more money they ever could working in the nine to five workforce. Some don't have the credentials, but most at-home entrepreneurs do have an extremely strong work ethic.

When you first start working at home it can be extremely hard to get anything done. It is so much easier to procrastinate and push it off until "after dinner" when you don't have someone breathing down your neck about a deadline. You must get organized and get serious. Too many people try working from their home and don't take it seriously. Treat your at-home business just like what it is; a BUSINESS, and don't forget it. If you treat it like a business, set schedules for yourself, and give yourself a nice quiet place to concentrate, then you will be well on your way to finding the at-home riches that everyone deserves.

You have to step out and give yourself a shot at total financial freedom. You deserve it, and you won't find it in the nine to five rat race; that's for sure. Have you ever asked yourself, why do so many people put so much time and effort into making someone else successful? People will spend their whole lives making someone else rich. It really doesn't make much sense at all. The first step is always the hardest, and when it comes to working at home it's usually the first year that's the hardest. No one said that working at home was easy, and in fact, it will probably be more challenging than a nine to five job for the first year or so. After the first year, if you applied your best effort into the correct area then you should start reaping the benefits of the tedious beginning stages.

Getting past the first year is only the first step in a long journey to financial success and freedom. There will still be many bumps in the road ahead, but keep your focus and stay true to yourself. Don't ever forget that when you work at home it may be tough, but it sure beats having a boss.

Work at Home Opportunities - Sifting Through All the Fakes!

For every thousand work at home opportunities or programs out there, there is only about ten that are legitimate. You probably are like a lot of people and have purchased a few systems that are out there today, and it probably consisted of you pulling out your credit card, receiving a file in your email, reading through the program once, and then last but not least, you realizing you just wasted your money and time. This can become extremely annoying and frustrating, especially when it happens to you more than once. Perseverance is the key. It may sound counter-intuitive, but it is the only thing that is going to make you successful when it comes to working at home.

No matter how many times you have failed or tried a failing system, you have to keep trying. There are legitimate businesses and systems out there today that everyday people use to bring in boat loads of cash from the comfort and freedom of their own home office. It's true there are tons and tons of scams out there, but if you know what to look out for you will find a profitable system in no time.

Sifting through the thousands of worthless programs out there can take you to your breaking point, so if you don't have perseverance and a strong work ethic, then stop reading!

1. The first thing to look out for is a gimmicky sales page. You can usually tell right off the bat just by looking at a sales page whether or not it is a scam. Notice: I said "look" at the sales page, "look" does not mean read! Whatever you do, don't read it while you are looking at it and inspecting it! Sales pages have a tendency of SELLING things to you! Inspect before you read! You should be looking for a contact number or email, the number of pages (should be at least 2), and the overall quality of the website. These three things can help you separate garbage from gold extremely quickly.

2. The second thing that you should look at are the promises made on the sales page. If the sales page promises you that you will make a million dollars next week by working "part time," then I can tell you that it is 100% JUNK. Anyone who promises unreal things like that but is still taking time to make a sales page...obviously isn't making that kind of money themselves. If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.

It won't be easy finding a program that passes these two tests, but when you do...JUMP on IT because you just may have found one of the rare legitimate work at home opportunities.

Is it Easy For Complete Newbies to Make Money Online?

This was the question I found myself asking not too long ago. I kept hearing all these marketers and "Internet Gurus" claiming that absolutely anybody could pay for their system and be taught to ace it in no time, but if it were that easy, wouldn't everyone be doing it?

The truth is it can be done. The only difference is that it will take a complete "newbie" (I hate that word) a bit longer, depending on his/her previous computer and Internet skills.

So if you come into the market full of confidence don't get discouraged if you don't make $10,000 in your first month. I've seen it happen too often where someone is given a fool proof system that people ARE making $10,000 per month easily, but when it doesn't happen for them right away they just give up, or label it as a scam and go off looking for something else, instead of sticking with it and just doing that little better each day until they ARE one of those out there pulling in $10,000+ per month. Don't think the ones out there earning loads of cash on the internet got there over night, they too once started off where you are today, feeling anxious, nervous and wondering "what if I fail". If you really want to succeed online it's up to you, sure it helps to find the right system and training online, but once you've found that it's up to you to actually put in the hours and work needed to create your own online success, and the beauty of it is, is that the more hard work and time you put into your online business, is exactly what you get back later on, but x 10!

So take what you know and have learnt and stick to it. Set your goals, do one thing at a time but do it to the best of your ability and also remember variety. Pick a certain number of marketing methods, research them a little first, then once you've chosen them concentrate on perfecting the methods you've chosen and sooner or later you will see results.

There is nothing more rewarding then getting your first sales, or seeing your first bit of success online, once you have that feeling you will be inspired to go on and on. So maybe make that one of your goals.

Keep plugging away and good things will happen... (I think that's actually a line from one of the "American Pie" movies.)

Never give up,

Alan Mans.
