Network Marketing Tools: A Modern Day Gold Rush?

Lots of people are getting into the Internet marketing game these days, the problem is that most have know clue what they are doing. Lured in by hype and promises of big money, it's not unlike the California Gold Rush (1848-1855). And although very few ever struck real riches, many people did get wealthy selling the miners the tools and supplies they needed to prospect for gold. As well as those that sold entertainment, which consisted of anything from a traveling theater to alcohol, gambling, and yes, ladies of the night.

I bring this up because all over the Internet, there are offers for the latest, greatest marketing system. Everyone says that this is the one, the one system that will put you over the top and allow you to live in marketing bliss forever. And they lead you to believe that they have " cracked the secret code " to marketing online. Well, let me tell you something. There is no " secret code " to crack. There are no secrets on the Internet. The only code you need to know how to crack is the one that is in your brain. The one that will get you motivated, inspired, off your couch and to work. That's the real secret guys, yourselves.

I am relatively new to the Internet marketing game, but this much I do know. I have a lot to learn. Do you think guys like Dillard, Budd, Jay Kubassek and my personal favorite, Contempo, learned their craft overnight? Of course not. While you were watching American Idol, they were working well into the night, I guarantee it. It takes years to learn the Internet marketing game. And all these so called systems?

TRUTH: Internet marketers do not follow the crowd. This is ridiculous, as one system can only support so many users and quite frankly why the hell do I want to ration my income with another guy who is competing for the same ground.

TRUTH: Internet marketers are very niche, and that's why the most successful one's you will never hear about. As they do not market to the masses but to a very exclusive carefully segmented crowd.

Who, in my opinion, is the most honest Internet "guru" I've come across. He speaks the truth, quite colorfully at times I might add. If creative language isn't your thing, don't visit his blog. As with most people who speak the truth, you might not like what he has to say, because you are already dropping $89.95 per month on some cookie cutter system designed to make the owners rich, not you.If it makes you feel better, I've been there, done that. Now, get over it and learn how to market.

Now, while your learning how to market online, ( such as writing articles like this one ), don't forget that at the end of the day, all business revolves around people.If you want to be truly successful, you have to talk to people. Especially in network marketing. This business, like any other, is a contact sport.

Your Mother is Killing Your Business

If you've ever watched American Idol, you'll easily remember the many people who believe with all of their heart that they are great singers when in reality, they shouldn't even be singing in the shower.

At first, you think the little wannabe is just trying to get attention, but after a few seconds of the post audition interview you realize - this guy is serious; he really thinks he can sing. As astounding as that is, what's even more shocking is that many business owners do the same thing. They fool themselves into believing that they are great at running a business, simply because their friends and family tell them that they are great. The truth: most business owners are great at their craft and bad at business. They are especially bad at marketing their business. Friends and family are not the best people to give you feedback on whether or not you are a good business person or even if you have a great business concept. There are a lot of great business ideas that seem strong up front but are fraught with too many hurdles to make any money.

The same is true in the negative. Friends and family can often give so much negative feedback that they discourage the entrepreneur from taking the risk at all. This is not good either. Family and friends can be very good for business.

When your family is willing to trumpet your business from door to door, phone to phone and wall to wall (subtle Facebook reference), include them in on the action. Let them know exactly what you do and what problems you solve and set them loose. This is where friends and family can be very important to the success of your business.

Of course friends and family are important. They provide personal support for you, and most of us business owners would never make it through the storms of business without the love and kindness of our loved ones.

It's an important role of the business owner to understand the power of those who are closest to them both for good and for bad. Make sure they play a proper part in your business and by all means... don't let your Mom kill your business by being blindly positive out of love, or harshly critical out of ignorance.

5 Weapons of Mass Distraction

How much time you can devote to building your network marketing / MLM business while holding a full time job is a case of simple math.

We all have 168 hours a week. Let's deduct 100 hours representing your full time job (assuming you work 40 hours), a conservative half-hour commute to/from work and 8 hours of sleep each night (like we get 8 hours of sleep). Suppose you spend 6 hours daily preparing meals, having meals, getting ready to go to work,
doing laundry, doing dishes, cleaning the house, helping with homework, etc. This leaves you with 26 hours to spend on your business, right? Wrong. What about the shopping that has to be done? And spending quality time with the children.

With that type of exhausting schedule, you will be extremely lucky to find an hour each day to build your network marketing / mlm business.

When you do settle in, make every minute count. You will find many weapons of mass distraction that will attempt to rob you of focusing solely on taking care of and building your business.

EMAIL. Sort through it quickly: respond first to team members who have questions or situations needing your attention. No time to open email with forward jokes or pictures of cute Chihuahuas dressed up in tuxedos and formal gowns. DISTRACTION.

SKYPE. Your team members or upline may have left you messages on Skype. Rapidly respond to these but avoid the temptation to make a Skype return call. We all know it'll turn into a time waster. And, definitely do not answer any Skype calls of a personal nature as these too are time wasters. DISTRACTION.

SOCIAL MEDIA. Using social media such as Twitter or Facebook is extremely effective in building your business. The clock is ticking, zero time to read and answer personal messages simply open, read and answer any communication about your business. With Twitter, use a service to accept followers, delete those who do not follow you and, definitely, automate your Twitter Tweets. Reading the gazillion Tweets that fill your screen: DISTRACTION.

PHONE CALLS. There is perhaps no greater usurper of your time than the telephone. Especially when you get a dear friend, let's call her Chatty Kathy (my wife's name is Kathy, sorry dear) who wants to give you every excruciating detail of her day. The simplest solution for these interruptions: let your answering machine handle these DISTRACTIONS, not you. (One of my elder aunts will call and speak to our answering machine as though it is part of our family. Problem is, she calls it four or five times in a row to keep adding to her original message.)

TELEVISION. Wait a minute. I plan my weeknights according to my TV Guide: American Idol, Biggest Loser, Grey's Anatomy, Seinfeld re-runs, etc. Exactly how much money are they paying you to watch these TV shows? That's what I thought. A half-hour of this DISTRACTION will turn into an hour or two and there goes your business building time.

These are very basic distractions. I'm sure you can think of and experience more. Your objective in building your mlm business is to eventually replace your full time job income so you can then free up 40 - 50 hours of work related time to continue building your business even bigger...and, of course, having an occasional coffee with Chatty Kathy to get caught up on neighborhood gossip.

Network Marketing and American Idol

Alright, I'm coming out of the closet. I know its a little "chicky", but I must confess that I watch American Idol, and enjoy it. For whatever reason, I must admit that like many men, I was a little bit self-conscious about this for a long time. I certainly wasn't going to bring up Clay Aiken's latest performance over golf with my buddies.

So I asked myself the question; how I did I get hooked, and develop a love for the show to the extent that could admit to my friends that I was a viewer? Through this reflection process, I realized that my experience and American Idol as a whole, is not all that different from network marketing.

Let's start with me. I have watched American Idol with my wife for years. While I was a bit ashamed of it at first, I became comfortable with it over time. Why? Because the more a watched, the more I realized that it's all about music. Watching great performance and competition is enjoyable, and there is no shame in that. But it took me several seasons before I felt comfortable making a comment around my friends about the show. In addition, it was the networking of the show itself that caused this confidence to increase in me. This is not all that different from network marketing, the industry has a stigma, and for most representing it is initially uncomfortable.

So what sold me, and developed my confidence in my American Idol interest. It's the same thing that sells tens of millions of other viewers, and many men just like me. It's the system, and it all starts with the passion and belief of the singer. There are plenty of good singers on American Idol, but the ones that rise to the top don't just sing a good tune, they also sell it. How do they sell it? It's through the contestants passion and belief in themselves, the show, the lyrics and the music.

Have you ever seen a contestant that seems to feel uncomfortable being on the show? These are usually male rockers or country artists. You can tell that they are doing it to promote their career, but they are not sure if it's the cool way to do it. They resemble the network marketer who is ashamed of the business model the represent. The ashamed network marketer is also not all that different from the "Closet American Idol Viewer".

If you watch the show, you will see a few of them every season. They may have all the talent in the world, but usually don't last for long. They sabotage their success because their embarrassment, lack of belief and confidence show through on their performance. Unfortunately, this is a recipe for failure in network marketing far more than it is on American Idol.

In network marketing, one has to have belief and passion in the system, the company, the product and themselves. On American Idol, the contestant must have passion and belief in themselves, the show, the music, and the lyrics. These factors sell the judges and the viewers every bit as much as the music. There are plenty of great singers, but the full package is a rare thing.

There are plenty of great singers the audition. Some of the best may never get past square one. It's the passion, belief and stage presence that really makes the difference between the finalists and the tens of thousands of others that audition. It's this "x-factor" that makes the difference between Simon labeling it as a "cruise ship performance" or deeming it "Absolutely Brilliant".

Just like network marketing, once the judges develop passion and belief in a contestant and their ability to performance, they are selling it to the viewers. If a contestant can't sell the judges, they have virtually no chance to sell themselves to the viewers. Interestingly, this usually happens in the early rounds. Once a contestant sells the judges, they generally have them in their corner, and they will sell them to the viewers again and again, even if they mess-up here and there.

Let's take that a step further. Once the judges have sold the viewers, the viewers then pitch their contestants to other viewers. It's just one giant network with the viewers holding the deciding vote. But in the end, it's not about the voice, it's about the package. A good singer with passion and belief will be outlasting an empty excellent singer, any day of the week. In the process they are networking themselves into a million dollar product.

It's not all that different from network marketing. There are a lot of great network marketing companies and products to represent. However, too many marketers get hung up on the company, and fail to realize that their main product is themselves. The first hurdle in network marketing is to sell oneself, the product and company are an extension of that initial close.

A successful network marketer sells themselves first; their passion for the industry then helps them deliver the specific message of the company and product. With the passion behind it, they can then transfer that enthusiasm into the prospects. Just like an American Idol contestant has the ability to touch millions through their passion and belief in their music and ability. A network marketer has the ability to reach hundreds of thousands of distributors though their passion and belief in themselves, the business model, company and product. Like an American Idol contestant, they also can leverage that passion and belief and turn themselves into superstars of the MLM industry.

Make More Sales - Be a Millionaire Closer

You are a great internet marketer! You are great at writing articles, making videos, writing blog posts! You spend several hundred dollars per week on pay-per-click advertising or some other source of direct response advertising! You drive thousands of visitors to your website and produce hundreds of leads daily! Like I said before, you are a great internet marketer!

But, you suck at closing!

Is this you? You gotta have both to be extremely successful, don't you? You gotta start improving your conversion rate or you'll go insane or broke! Some of the greatest closers in the network marketing industry don't actually talk to prospects themselves. They outsource. You can do this by hiring someone and training them to close prospects just as you would or you can hire a closing company. They probably don't call themselves a "closing" company, but that's essentially their job. If they never closed a sale for you, they wouldn't be in business very long.

I was watching American Idol the other night. One of the contestants went sliding across the stage and was bouncing around the stage and slapping the hands of the girls in the audience like he was some big rock star. Kara, one of the judges, actually called him out. She told him that he was far from being a rock star. And, until he was a star, he didn't deserve to act like one. Why do I mention this? Because you should feel the same way about your network marketing/internet marketing career and hiring a closer for you. Until you can close at ease, you probably should just concentrate on learning how before you start outsourcing it. I don't mean this to offend you, I mean this to make you a better marketer. You need to be able to teach your team to do the same!

Here is the method I learned from my millionaire marketing mentor and the method I use to make a very nice living myself.

First of all, you need to be "un-offendable." Lots of people aren't like you! They don't think like you! They don't have the capability of being like you! You are better than so many people out there in the world because you are persuing a dream! You are creating your own destiny! You are writing your own paychecks! Most people work for a living and don't have dreams. They make other people rich through their own blood, sweat and tears. These people are not ENTREPRENEURS! So, you need to let them be employees. You are looking for entrepreneurs. When you engage someone on the phone, you may get some harsh replies and comments. Go ahead and hang up! More than likely they are just losers anyway. Don't let it bother you!

Call #1

Call #1 should be no longer than 10 minutes long. During this call, you want to engage the prospect by asking specific, pre-planned, questions about THEM to establish the reasons why they are looking for an "opportunity." You need to establish with them their goals and dreams. With this information, you have the keys to their heart and soul. Talk about THEM often.
Most network marketing or mlm companies have a pre-recorded "business plan" somewhere online. Get your prospect to view the business plan. I failed to mention in the previous bullet point that you DO NOT want to attempt to describe the business plan yourself. There are highly paid people within your company that have created this for you and can probably explain it much better than you. Just get you prospect to log onto the website or get them on a live business overview call.
If your company has information for your prospect that is sent in the mail, tell your prospect to not wait for the material to arrive. GET THEM ON THE BUSINESS PLAN CALL IMMEDIATELY! You don't want to run the risk of turning a "hot" prospect into a "cold" prospect because they have time to sit around and re-think their decision. Most buying decision like this one are made on emotion. Your prospect may have had a really bad day at work, which caused them to come looking for you. Take full advantage of their current emotional state before they have time to "cool off." You and I both know that they will be much better taken care of if they start a home based business, so help them make that decision while they are in the right state of mind.
Finally, book an appointment for call #2. You want to preferably book a same-day follow-up, after your prospect has seen the business plan. Again, keep the emotion going!

Call #2

Call #2 will be about 20 minutes. Why 20 minutes? Because that's enough time to close the sale without talking too much and talking your prospect out of the sale. The longer you chat, the more likely you will say something that scares them away.
50% of your prospects will be a "no-show" for your scheduled follow-up call. It is VERY important to not get attached to anyone being there when you schedule them. Some will. Some won't. So what? Someone else is waiting next!
Get them at their computer, with a notepad. You will be walking them through the sign-up process during call #2, so being near a computer is very important. You may want to establish this criteria during call #1.
Re-affirm their desire to get out of whatever situation they are in. Re-affirm their goals and dreams.
Walk them through the sign-up process.
Give them a two or three day action plan.
Welcome them to your team!

Congratulations! You have just learned how millionaire marketers close more sales! Now, get out there and do the same!

Before you go, here are a few general tips that will come in handy during your calls:

Never say "Please" or "Thank You." As soon as you say either of these words, you make your prospect think that they have the upper hand. You make them think that it is your priviledge to talk to them. You give them the control. You want them to feel like you are the expert, because you are! Your time is limited because there are hundreds of people waiting to speak to you. It is their priviledge to be on the phone with you!
Don't talk about how much money you are making. Most people don't buy because they want to make more money. They buy because they want to live a better life. They want more time freedom. They want to fire their boss. They want to take more vacations. So, don't talk money! If you have a prospect that does ask about money, go back to what we talked about in call #1 and re-emphasis THEIR goals and dreams.
Ask them, "How serious are you?" It's a question that will make them think that you're serious. After all, if you're asking them how serious they are, it must mean that you are serious about this business. You will gain credibility.
Ask your prospect about family. Get family member's names. Write them down so that you will remember them. If you can remember and use family member's names in the current and future calls, it is a HUGE plus.
Don't ask your prospect if they have questions. If they ask you, that's fine. Answer them. But, you want them to feel like you are their leader and whatever you say is the best guidance for them. If you are truly presenting yourself in this way, your prospect will not ask too many questions. This is your goal. Besides, like I mentioned before, you want to leverage your company's business plan webinar or the company website to help you answer all the questions that may come up.

Potential Objection

You are on call #2 with your prospect, about to walk them through the sign-up process. Your prospect says, "I've got to talk to my spouse." Here is your answer.....

"How does your wife feel about you starting a business? I respect that. I'm sure that with what you've seen, and after the conversation with your spouse, you'll both feel this is a good move. I'm going to walk you through how to get set up for when you are ready to move forward. Because I think you're the kind of leader this team is looking for, I'm going to give you a $100 discount, but you need to take action before tomorrow night at midnight. The code is *****. I'm going to schedule your 3-day action plan call on Monday, anyways. I've got a timeslot open at 4 and 6 pm. Which one will work for you?"

Starting a Business From Home - Is That For You?

Starting a business from home has turned into a reality for millions of people all around the world. The recent economic downturn has transformed the way people view job security and the whole conventional "go to college, study and get a job" way of life.

In this article I look mainly at MLM or network marketing Internet home based businesses so it's bit different from starting an offline home business.

As I have read several articles regarding home based business in the last few months there are quite a few declaring that the entire job concept is transforming; starting a business from home is the new solution to cure the US economic system and it is replacing the traditional way of working.

Even though this way of believing is wonderful for those who are promoting home based businesses, it has to be stated that it is a rose colored view of the situation. Home based business is a terrific industry and it is great that a lot of people are searching for solutions to create additional income streams to supplement their shrinking incomes.

However, if we view this against the reality that most home based businesses end up the similar way as traditional businesses with a 90-95% failure rate, even a person with below average mathematic expertise can observe that there is something wrong with this brand new dazzling future of American and global economic system.

You might be wondering why I'm discussing about adverse aspects of home based business, but to be honest, it irritates me to see these types of new economic prophecies that are complete marketing rubbish.

Why don't we be completely truthful here; there is simply no way network marketing and MLM business could ever be a new economic savior of global economy. We can't be selling fruit juice to each other and save the world economy while doing that. And, by the way, someone has to do the "real" work as well.

OK, now that we have that off our back we can start considering whether starting a business from home is for you?

Well, it depends.

First, we have to recognise that we as individuals are not similar to each other. Most of us are not salespeople for starters. Does that stop you from starting a business from home? Definitely not.

There are millions of ways to work from home and network marketing and MLM are just one small piece of the puzzle. Internet is full of possibilities and your imagination is the only limitation.

To start, you should have a definite goal you are aiming for. It should be something big, not just money. You will need that big goal when things get rough.

Are you looking to supplement your current income or are you planning to go full time? Network marketing and MLM work for both goals; with MLM it usually takes 1-3 years before you can go full time, but if you go with top tier network marketing company it is definitely possible to go full time in 6-12 months, depending what is your current income that you want to replace.

OK, let's say that you have decided to start a top tier direct marketing home based business (whew!). You are all excited and wait for the checks to start rolling in. And wait...

Unfortunately, despite all marketing hype, starting a home based business online is exactly like offline business. The only difference is that you do not have to leave your home, you just open your laptop and there is your business, right in front of you.

This is probably the biggest obstacle for most people who are starting a business from home. They have used to see their computer as a fun way to go online and start chatting and viewing funny videos. Changing from someone who uses Internet for fun to someone who works there is a big step.

Internet can be a huge time waster as we all know. You should be submitting articles, commenting on blogs, clicking on traffic exchanges, using Twitter and other social media for business, but instead two hours go by just like that and then there's American Idol on TV. This is reality for all who are doing business online. Focusing online is tough.

You definitely have to have a plan for everyday. Make a list of 5 things that will build your business before you go to bed and do those things the first thing when you open your computer. No email, nothing, before doing those 5 things.

After you have done those, you will feel GOOD! Then relax for a while and do some fun stuff as well.

Starting a business from home requires will power, imagination, intelligence and hard work. And you will be criticized. A lot. First your family and co-workers think you are grazy. The hard part is that you are not sure whether they are wrong or right. Once you have crossed that line you will find people online who hate passionately everything that can be viewed as network marketing, MLM or affiliate programs. You will be called a scammer and other even weirder nick names.

Are you still willing to start? Great! You have the right mental attitude and you will be successful. Home based business online is the greatest thing since sliced bread and I applaud your decision to take that challenging, but most rewarding way of life. You are ready to start your global business online. Now, what was that URL for that funny video I was just watching? And before I forget here's a great quote from no less than Aristotle:

5 Lessons Reality Shows Teach Us About Home Business Success

Any night of the week, you can turn on your television and find one. The cultural icon known as the reality show is everywhere. Whether it's someone with a big voice and an even bigger dream on "American Idol," a "Dancing with the Stars" celebrity doing the Jive with sore feet, or overweight men and women sweating to reach their goal weights on "The Biggest Loser," these show participants have lessons to teach us home business owners.

Lesson #1: You must step out of your comfort zone to achieve success in your home business.

Every week on "The Biggest Loser," we watch as these brave men and women step on the dreaded scale to reveal their weights, while the contestants on "American Idol" perform live in front of judges and millions of viewers who analyze every note. Clearly, they have had to step out of their comfort zones. As home business owners, we must do the same. It's easy for us to stay in place, repeating the same motions that have not worked in the past, while expecting a different outcome. We dream about success, yet we never take that big step to make it happen.

Lesson #2: You must develop and follow an action-based system.

How do professional dancers transform celebrities of all ages, many of whom have never danced a step, into ballroom dancers? How do the trainers on "The Biggest Loser" change the bodies of adults who have struggled with weight issues for years? With an action-based system. Just as these dancers and trainers use proven methods and procedures, you have to develop a system and follow it consistently to achieve success in your home business.

Lesson #3: Home business success will require you to work longer, smarter and harder than you ever have before.

Do you think when these contestants commit to a show they really know how hard they are going to work? Do you think they realize the hours it will require, the pain they will have to push through and the sacrifices they will have to make? We regularly hear them say, as the season goes on, that they never realized it would be this much work. Many of us also go into home business ownership believing the same myth. The reality is, success only comes after a significant commitment of time and energy.

Lesson #4: Recognize when you need to alter your current home business success plan.

Have you cringed as a celebrity dancer missed a step and almost fell to the floor? Did you feel the disappointment when a contestant lost only two pounds? These participants inevitably must review these experiences and adapt in order to survive elimination. The same is true in your home business. Whenever we try to do something big, there will always be missteps along the way. We will experience results that are not what we expected and must adapt our plans in order to achieve the success we desire.

Lesson #5: Success will never come to those who quit.

The judges on "American Idol" and "Dancing with the Stars" can be brutal at times. One judge, in particular, has the reputation of bringing some singers to tears. And yet, the strongest contestants push through this adversity and survive to sing again. So we should follow their example. Whether it is receiving criticism from a client or reacting to disappointing results from an advertising campaign, we must put our emotions aside and persevere through the inevitable challenges that face any home business.

Even if you do not watch reality shows on a regular basis, check out one and think about these lessons.
