It makes sense - if you're entering a crowded space with a bunch of competitors, having more features seems like a sure-fire way to win. But it rarely works that way.

The truth is that for most applications, doing less is better than doing more.

The Minimum Viable Product

Coined by Venture Hacks, the Minimum Viable Product is the smallest set of features that you need to build in order to get customers to pay you. For most web or mobile applications, their Minimum Viable Product (or MVP) is considerably smaller than the product they set out to build.

The reality is that most users of your site will only care about a couple of features. If you think about the sites you use most frequently, they usually do one or two things really well. They may have a ton of extras built in, but you probably find yourself using them for one purpose.

For Facebook, I check out updates on my friends. LinkedIn is my personal rolodex. I use Flickr to manage my photos. I use Yelp to find restaurants when I'm at a loss.

Your usage habits on sites you frequent is probably very similar.

What is your MVP?

So what's your equivalent of that? There are a couple of questions you can ask to figure out your MVP:

If you were only able to build one of the features in your spec document, which would you build?Which you tell others about your product, which feature do you tell them about first?
When you tell others about your product, which feature do they gravitate toward the most?
Which feature do you think will your customer be most likely to pay for?
Which feature do you think your users will use most frequently?

Armed with the answer to those questions, take your spec document and pare it down to the one or two features that are most important. Build them first and get feedback. Continue to devote the majority of your resources on them. And pay very close attention to how changes to those features improve user conversion.

Don't waste your time building 50 mediocre features. Build one or two great ones instead.

That the Google search engine is something nearly 50% of all internet users interact with on a daily basis makes the Google Apps platform something of an easy sell. It seems bound to succeed through force of the ubiquitous Google brand alone.

Free market advocates fear not, as there should soon be a worthy competitor to Google Docs juggernaut, and allegations of monopoly can be decisively stomped out. In a joint press release, Microsoft and Facebook have announced that they have collaborated on a similar app, tentatively titled "Docs for Facebook", which recently entered its first round of beta testing.

Here is the funny thing: That guy did not write a single line of the code that ran that site. He hired other people to do it for him. The only thing he did was take the view from 30,000 feet in coming up with the concept, then swoop in for the kill when the time was right.

You and I will probably never get that "lucky." We might never have that kind of moxie. We might never have the vision. We might lack the confidence to approach venture capitalists.

You know what, though? It does not matter. We can still dip our cups in the programmers' golden river and drink. You see, programming has little to do with coding. A program is just a set of instructions. If you can think of that set of instructions -- even in broad terms -- to make a computer do something that people want that computer to do, you can write a popular program. Write a popular program, and you can probably make a very good living without selling your soul to venture capitalists.

The way things are now, if you write a popular program you might even be able to get extremely rich without even selling the program. What do you think happened with Google? Two guys wrote a great search algorithm. It became popular. The world beat a path to their door, and now they're billionaires.

But how can you make money programming, even if you're not a coder? Do it the same way the guy in the first paragraph of this article did: Hire other people to do the grunt work for you. Whether you outsource or pay your cousin to do it, you can find someone to write the code that will drive your killer app.

You know where to find them -- Elance or Odesk or one of those sites. But how do you find a good coder to carry your project to completion?

Here is what to avoid:

coders who can't speak English well (How are you going to explain what you want?)
coders who can't show examples of previous work (Don't even bother.)
coders who demand a lot of money up front (Pay in phases.)

That's how you get your app developed. Now what about the money?

Here you have three options:

Sell your app as an old-school closed-source program running on PCs, Bill Gates-style.
Put your app on the web and let it become popular. Make your money off subscriptions or ads.
Sell your app through mobile services.

Of those three, the last two are best at the time of this writing.
