What Equipment Do I Need to Start My Home Baking Business?

What Equipment Do I Need to Start My Baking Business?

Here's the good news: using only the most basic equipment, found in most home kitchens, you can begin to bake for profit today!

What Do You Consider "Basic Equipment"?

1. An oven - your basic home oven will usually do fine. If you are buying a new oven consider choosing a convection oven as it will be a great asset. However, I have done all of my baking with a regular home oven. My mother has two wonderful convection ovens in her kitchen and I get to use those occasionally when I visit her.

2. A mixer - What kind of mixer do you need? A commercial mixer is totally unnecessary (I have one, a giant Hobart, which I rarely use). Any mixer will be a great benefit.

A company called Bosch makes a wonderful mixer. The center column makes it a little harder to clean. Your baking results, however, will be impressive. I have a Bosch which is great for bread baking and almost anything else you want to bake.

I also have a Kitchen Aid stand mixer which I use almost daily. I like it best for cookies and cakes.

Other Equipment Found in Most Kitchens:
A large bowl.
Measuring cups and measuring spoons.
A cookie sheet.
A loaf pan (you can always free-form your loaves if you don't have one).
Muffin pans
Cake pans - round, 13"x9", or half sheet. (Remember: use what you have!)
A nut chopper will be a great time and frustration saver. A food processor will work well too!

Kitchen Scale
A basic scale will be a great addition to your baking business. It will give you better accuracy and consistency in your products. I use one that handles weights up to 10 pounds.

Personal Favorites - Things I Have Used The Most
In my baking business I have used a 16 inch round cake pan more than any other baking pan. I have used it almost exclusively to make party cookies. I have a 1/4 sheet and a 1/2 sheet cake pan that I used until I finally wore them out and had to purchase others. A jelly roll pan has also been a great benefit - although I have never actually made a jelly roll. I also have a set of round pans and a set of heart-shaped pans which have been wonderful to have.

I recommend that you start with what you have on hand because that is what you already use and are familiar with. You can then add equipment as your business grows and as the need for other equipment presents itself.

How to Introduce Your Baking and Get Customers

Have you found the perfect product to bake? If the answer is yes - then the next ingredient to a successful home baking business is customers. Where will you find your customers?

Think About Who You Know
Think about where you go and what you do on a regular basis. Who do you run into while you're out and about? This could be family, friends, your hairdresser, social clubs, ladies clubs, church family, nurses, realtors, doctors, librarians, your insurance agent, midwives, neighbors, former co-workers, your spouse's co-workers, etc. Soon-to-be customers are everywhere you are! They will be thrilled to find someone who will provide a great product at a great price and make it convenient at the same time. And talk about freshness! They can't get freshness like that just anywhere!

How will you introduce your products?
Bake samples to introduce others to your new baking business. Tell them you are beginning a new bake-at-home business and would like their opinion on your new products. If you are uncomfortable just taking them in to the business you could ask them if they would like to see them. Be prepared to tell them how often you are going to bake (1 time a week, only on holidays, every Friday, bake to order, etc.) and how far in advance they need to place their order. The most effective way to sell your product is to let them see, smell, and taste what you are going to sell.

Be sure to ask them to consider letting you do their baking. Many will say yes. Soon you will have to decide what your limits are and how much baking you want to do.

Another way to get customers is to offer to make shower or birthday cakes, etc., as your gift. Soon word will get around that you do cakes.

If it is your turn to bring sweets to the Sunday morning coffee hour or ladies tea, make sure you bring your best. Everyone will want to know where you got your sweets. Tell them you made them and sell them in your baking business. You probably will not have to tell them they will be asking you. Let them know if they ever need something special you will be happy to make it for them.

You might want to sell at a local flea market. Be sure you know the rules of the flea market, as some do not allow this. The rules also change so check back every few months if they do not presently allow it. Selling at a flea market can be quite successful. If you want to do this and develop a customer base you should be there regularly - like the first Saturday of the month, or every Saturday. Soon they will be looking for you! Be prepared to have cards with your contact information on it for when they ask you for it. I would suggest including some individual goodies for flea markets and craft fairs as well as your usual items. My eleven year old daughter recently made up a large batch of 6-inch chocolate chip party cookies. These were undecorated and bagged in everyday storage bags. She sold every single one of them within an hour.

Using these and many other ideas I share in my book you will soon have plenty of customers for your delicious products.

Happy Baking,
Reda

How to Start a Baking Business at Home - A Potential Goldmine

The best thing about learning how to start a baking business at home is that I will get to earn money while doing something that I love. It also helps if I have a recipe with secret ingredients that that I have learned to develop and sue over time. Knowing how to bake will also help. Here is what I did when I started my home based baking business.

I first of all made enquiries about the licenses and certificates that I needed before I could begin operations. I also made sure that I had my home business insured. My next step was to buy the different types of baking tins that I would use to bake my cakes and breads. I also encouraged my friends and family to try out my home baked goodies. This is because I realized the best marketing for my products would be through word of mouth. My small network of customers ended up growing because I was providing people with freshly baked products that kept them asking for more.

I continued to keep track of my business development and I made sure I filed my taxes on time. I also took time to differentiate my products from what other people were offering. One of the products that I introduced to the market was whole meal breads and cakes. These proved to be quite a hit with my customers because not only were they great tasting but were also very filling. Also the smell of freshly baked cakes has a way of providing a bit of cheer especially during winter.

How to Start A Baking Business At Home - Getting Your Niche

Studying for my college diploma was a challenging part of my life. I was often financially strapped and unable to participate in many college activities. For this reason I decided to learn how to start a baking business at home. My first course of action was deciding what kind of baked goods I would supply. I settled for Girl Scout cookies since that is what I was best at baking.

Getting my business registered was the next step. I settled for Melville Home Made Cookies for my business name. I was then given a permit and a set of regulations that I needed to comply with. I also set up a bank account for my bakery. Marketing my products was easy since I live in a gated community. The local neighborhood was very receptive when I delivered some samples for them to taste. I also visited some offices and even took time to visit the local church with my home-made cookies.

The reason why my business has been such a phenomenal success is the fact that people love home made products. I also have my own special recipes that keep my customers coming back for more. The local schools in my locality have an arrangement with me to provide their canteens with cookies. I also keep track of my business expenses to make sure my business is in a healthy financial position. Uncle Sam also gets his share. I make it a point to remind my customer that my cookies are all made with a very special ingredient and that is love for my community.

Legalities to Consider Before Starting a Small Business Baking From Home

Baking from home as a small business can be a profitable enterprise. There are some legal considerations one should make before your dreams of cupcake heaven are crushed prior before even getting off the ground. First consider the requirement of your local city or town. The health department or agency responsible for food and agriculture is probably the best place to start first. These agencies primary function is to insure the safety of the general public. If you are allowed to bake from home there maybe modifications required to your kitchen equipment such as the sink or trash refuse. Your next step requires obtaining a license to operate in your town/city, most municipalities require a permit when operating a business within their boundaries, often referred to as an occupational license.

Once you've determined that you will be able to operate in your desired location, you'll need to determine what type of business structure you will operate under. There are many online DIY resources for help establishing the business structure, however, there're pros and cons to all type whether it is a sole-proprietorship, LLC., or Corporation, and you may want to consult an attorney and/or tax professional on their recommendations. Your tax professional can also advise what's necessary to keep in compliance with applicable tax laws as your business grows throughout the year. Other professionals you may want to consult with include your insurance professional, if you hope to supply to a commercial establishment they may have a minimum amount of insurance required for which you'd need to be covered.

These are some consideration you should make when [http://www.bakingfromhome.com]baking from home to get your business started on the write foot.

Ready to Start Your Home-Based Baking Business? Don't Become Overwhelmed

I've received many e-mails on this subject. I've also consulted with bakers who are ready to start their baking businesses (preferably at home); but they're walking around in a fog of confusion about what should be done first, second and thereafter. Having been there myself, I know the feeling.

So, to hopefully clear the fog and confusion for you, I created a check list of simple steps that will help you focus and get your baking business started. At a minimum, these steps will assist you with the process of finding out if a home-baking business is doable for you, or, if you need to search for inexpensive alternatives to starting and operating your baking business from home.

Before I begin the list of steps, please understand that not all cities, counties and local agencies will allow a food preparation business to be operated from the home. With that said, here are your steps...

1) Find out if a home-baking business is allowed in your area. When I say "area" I'm referring to your city or county. This will require a little research. More guidance will be provided later in this article.

2) If a home-baking business is allowed and you've decided to work from home, follow carefully the guidelines that are provided to you by the business license office, the zoning department and the department of agriculture.

3) If you are not allowed to start a baking business from your home, then look for an alternative place to start the business. There are several good and cost effective alternatives that you might consider. These alternatives should not require the traditional retail bakery startup or cost. Research in your local area will provide you with enough information to decide which option is best for you. To help you start the search, here are a few suggestions for alternatives: restaurants and caterers that will share space with you, cooking schools that have kitchen rental agreements, commercial kitchens, etc.

4) Once you've done the necessary research and made a decision on where your business will be operated, write a detailed plan for your business that includes: a startup budget, how you plan to proceed with renovations (if necessary) for the home bakery, operation and management of the business, a descriptive list of your products, a description of your potential market, price structure and more.

5) Before spending any money on the start-up of your baking business, make sure you've done all of the necessary research and planning. Make sure that the startup place and procedure that you've chosen is best for you. Not everyone's choices and decisions will be the same. Sometimes personal considerations can color and form decisions more than laws, rules and regulations.

6) Follow the business plan that you created for your business. The economic climate and your potential market can change. Be prepared to make changes or adjustments to your plan as needed.

Starting a home-baking business is simple in terms of understanding procedure (what has to be done). Getting it done, so that you are licensed and approved, can be more a little more challenging.

So, ask yourself...Am I up to the task? Do I have the necessary skills for research (which includes asking questions and talking with people)? Do I have the ability to put together a simple workable plan? Do I have the focus, dedication, patience and passion to execute my plan? How badly do I want this business?

Only you can answer these questions. The only way to get answers is to get started and give it all you've got. As the saying goes, "The Proof is in the Pudding". What will your end product be?
