How to Analyse Your Competition (And Know If You Can Beat Them)

So how do you know if you can rank for a keyword or not? Let's say you're about to create a brand new site and you're going to be writing all of the content and creating all of the links yourself.

You've gone and fired up Google's keyword tool and you've found a bunch of keywords that you're interested in pursuing. What next?

Look at the first page of Google's search results. Do the sites ranking on this page have the keyword you want to rank for in their titles? Do they have it in their URL (particularly as their domain name)? Are many of these pages sub-pages (i.e. pages that are not the homepage) or homepages? If the answer to most of these questions is 'yes' more often than not, than you may want to avoid that particular keyword. If the keyword passes these tests, check out the Page Rank of each of the top 5 sites in the listing. Ideally you want none of them to be above a Page Rank of 3.

Now, I know I'm not being entirely scientific here, but you have to almost develop an instinct or a feel for which keywords are 'rankable'. This might sound a little odd, but it's a knack that you'll develop over time (as I have) with enough experience).

Obviously no ranking is every guaranteed (there are too many variables to contend with) and you should always have patience with your site. Good rankings will never happen overnight. In fact, many experts believe you may need to wait up to a year before your website really hits its stride.

Giving Away Free Beats to Promote Your Site

So you have a beat-selling website that gets around 100 people visiting it per day. That's 100 potential customers. But are they returning visitors and previous customers or just casual passers by? Statistically it has been shown that buyers in the beat market do not purchase a beat the first time on a site. More frequently they buy on the 3rd, 4th or 5th time. So how do you keep them coming back?

One of the most important things that I learned about having a beat-selling site is the value of building your email list. Once you have an email list, you can send out emails to all of your subscribers whenever you have a new beat, which greatly increases your chance of a sale.

So in this example, say out of those 100 visitors, you're able to capture 20 emails per day. This would mean that in a year's time, you would have a list of over 6000 potential customers that could potentially want one of your beats. So when you send out an email to those 6000 people, say 1% actually buy a beat when you send out an email. That's 60 people buying a beat every time that you make a new beat. If you're selling your beats for $20, you just made $1200-just by sending an email!

But how do you build your list? Well if you have a Soundclick page, they enable all premium customers to build an email list for no additional cost. This is one of the greatest things about Soundclick. There are producers on Soundclick that are getting 1000s of visitors a day, collecting hundreds of email addresses. You better believe when they release a new track, they make a good amount of money.

However if you have built your own website, there is a different solution available to you. AWeber is an email marketing company that allows you to automatically build and maintain your email list. The monthly cost is $20 for lists under 500 and then goes up from there. But like I've shown, the service will pay for itself many times over and is well worth the investment if you're getting any amount of traffic to your site.

In order to entice people to actually sign up or opt in to your email list, you have to give them something. Some producers simply say that they'll keep them updated and send out emails every time that they post a new beat. If your beats are incredible, this may be enough. However, I've found that you can greatly increase your opt-in rate if you give away free beats to your subscribers. So as soon as they subscribe to your email list, you give them a few free beats.

Even though giving away these free beats means that they may not purchase a beat the first time that they are on your site, you now have their email address forever and a week later or a month later, it is likely that they will come back and purchase.

Check For Consistency - It's How the Tortoise Beat the Hare

Remember Aesop's fable of The Tortoise and The Hare? Both were in a race, and the hare dashed off to an incredible start. He became complacent, and even arrogant to the point where he took a nap, thinking that he could wake up and still beat the tortoise. When the hare woke up, he dashed as fast as he could to the finish line only to find the tortoise celebrating victory.

As an entrepreneur, you may feel a bit intimated by your competition when they seem to have an explosive start, just like the hare. However, my mentor told me that there is one principle anyone can follow if you want to win anything, including beating your competition who may have more experience and higher skill level than you. That principle is consistency.

There are many entrepreneurs who start off explosively. They seem to taste a lot of success early on and may sometimes brag about their accomplishments, which could frustrate their competitors who may not have had such a strong start. For whatever reason, however, they may lose their intensity and commitment after a while. Meanwhile, the other entrepreneurs, who may not have had a strong start, would start catching up and eventual overtake the guy who had the explosive start, just like how the tortoise overtook the hare. The main discipline they practiced was consistency.

Inconsistency is one major killer of dreams, and it's perhaps the main reason why many people fail to achieve their goals. They spend a great deal of time planning and executing, but when they lack consistency, things start to fall apart. People show inconsistency when they start slacking off and become complacent when they rest on their laurels. Others perhaps feel burnout or exhaustion because they expended all their energy in the beginning and did not factor in a time period for proper rest.

If you want to succeed and win the game, stay consistent. If you are making 5 prospecting calls a day, don't stop when one of your calls converts into business. Sure, take a few moments to savor the victory, but don't celebrate by slacking off and putting off those prospecting calls for a few weeks. It's hard to get back into your rhythm, and you lose the results those few weeks could have produced. You would have also killed momentum, which would take a lot of time, effort and energy to reproduce.

So don't worry if your competition starts off ahead, and you start to feel like you're not accomplishing anything. What matters the most is how you continue. If you stay consistent, just like the tortoise, you will beat out your talented competition (the hare) in the long run.
