No commute

For someone who, like me, hates sitting in traffic every morning and often in the evening as well or has to spend a couple of hours a day on trains and/or the Underground, this is a brilliant benefit. It means you can either get up later or use the time you'd normally spend commuting doing productive work instead. And you either finish much earlier or again, can use the time to be productive, working on your own business if that's what you choose to go for.

Productivity

Apart from saving time not commuting, you tend to be much more productive at home because it's generally quieter, there are fewer distractions and interruptions than in an office. That should be a big bonus not just for you but also for your employer if you're employed by someone else.

Flexibility

Whether you're working for someone else or for yourself, you have much greater flexibility in what you do with your day. Sun shining? You can take a walk or go for a bike ride in the afternoon and work a little later that day or start work earlier so you can have time off in the afternoon. The same applies for doing the washing or a bit of shopping, mowing the lawn/doing some gardening, picking up the children from school, going to watch the school play, exercising, etc., provided your employer is ok with you being flexible as long as the work gets done. If they let you work from home, chances are they'll be fine with it. And if you're working for yourself, you're the boss.

Being your own boss (if you're going down the self-employed route only)

You get to decide what you do and don't do. You can work as few or as many hours as you want, bearing in mind the impact this will have on your earnings. You are totally responsible and if you do well, you can take all the credit.

Income

Depending on what you do, your earnings potential is much higher. You can determine how much you want to ear and then go out and do it. You can leverage other people's time and use multiple income streams to make this happen.

What About The Drawbacks?

Lack of interaction

Because you're on your own, it can be a little lonely sometimes. However, depending in your job, you may still have lots of telephone or face-to-face contact with people, e.g. visiting clients, talking to clients, suppliers and colleagues on the phone, etc. If none of these apply and you really need some social interaction, you can have lunch with a friend, see people when you take the kids to school or pick them up or go out with friends in the evening.

Office space

This isn't a proper drawback but I thought I'd better bring this to your attention. While office space isn't essential, it does help in many jobs if you have an office so that you can keep work and home separate. But don't worry if you don't have a separate room, as long as you have somewhere where you can concentrate and that doesn't have an impact on the home out of working hours.

Being your own boss (if self-employed)/getting the work done

Hang on, I hear you say, you had being your own boss down as a benefit. Yes, that's true, and whilst being your own boss can be great, you are totally responsible for everything, success as well as failure. And because you have no-one to tell you what to do, you have to be motivated and disciplined enough to do the work required to achieve your goal. So if you're disciplined and self-motivated, this isn't a drawback at all.

1. Nobody is there to tell you what to do. This is an interesting one because you might want to get away from your '9 to5' to avoid having a boss but you realize that being your own boss might be difficult because doing whatever you want might lead to doing nothing. To minimize this challenge, boss yourself around. Use a schedule, notes around the house, reminders on your mobile phone, an over-sized calendar, whatever it takes to remind yourself to put some pep in your step. Being your own boss means just that. You must find some way to get it through to yourself that the work must be done.

2. The bed is soooo comfortable. Solution: get out of it! Set your alarm clock. You obviously don't need to set it for dawn, when you're barely alive, like you did when you had to go into an office. But, in line with being your own boss, set your alarm, don't hit snooze too many times, and get out of bed. You can still take a nap in the middle of the day since you do work from home! But, get up, get out of bed and do some work first.

3. It's boring being alone. This is a tough one. I happen not to mind being alone all day if I have to, but, for some, it's less than pleasant. Solution: find someone that you can help. Having a home-based business gives you a luxury that most people don't have, control of your time. Surely there must be a neighbor or a friend who needs something from you, a phone call, a trip to the grocery store, a hug. Doing things for others can add happiness to your life and keep you from being bored and hating your home-based business.

There might be more disadvantages that you can think of. But, when you think about it more fully, working outside of the home, for someone you don't like very much, with people you wouldn't choose as friends, has many more challenges.
