Working From Home - What a Mess

It has always been a question of mine as to why companies pay utility costs, building maintenance, mortgages or rent, rental of computers, phone lines, etc... when they could just have people work from home?

It seems simple enough, really. Almost everyone has at least once computer and a cell phone. Most people that are willing to work also have a place to call home, a roof, power, phones, and so on. If a company were to outsource to at home workers, it would certainly save money and increase profits.

I have been looking in to working from home for some time now and I find it appalling. Working from home obviously has its benefits, at least in theory.

A recent webinar I attended had me excited. Finally, a realistic opportunity to work from my home. No commute, set my own hours, have all the luxuries of home to occupy my mind on breaks and at lunch. It sounds great, and indeed it would be, but it seems there are many costs associated with working from home.

You need a POTS, or plain old telephone service to work a customer service job. That isn't a huge investment, but it is an extra expense each month I don't need. You also need a headset that can hook up into a USB port, and an additional noise cancelling headset to hook up to your phone from the wall. How about a background check? An assessment fee? Yes and Yes. Paid Training. I suppose the answer is yes if you're asking does the company you'll be working with require you to pay for training. So far, I have heard nothing about the job opportunities, but the fees are stacking up. I have never had to pay to find a job. I can see paying a fee from each check, which, by the way, is also part of the deal, but having to pay for a test, a background check and training? No, way. The real kicker here is that you have to be available during the training hours for the training you just paid for, and while there are evening training hours, many of us get home from our dead end jobs, tired and worn out. Who wants to train for nothing when they could be catching up on the latest Family Guy on Netflix?

The sundae is topped by the fact that these jobs pay less than what I make at my current job, which paid for my background check, drug screen, training and assessment. So ultimately, the opportunity wasn't worth the 15 minutes I spent listening to this presentation.

I have decided to take a different route by looking into affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is basically like a beehive. You have the main company, the queen bee, then all the drones sent out to gather the honey for the queen. The best part of it is, you get paid when the company gets paid. Not a bad deal when you consider that your paycheck is always a week behind your pay period.

I think working from home is a dream that may never die for me, and the idea that even replacing my current income with hair brained ideas from home would be enough for me. I'm not trying to get rich, but I definitely want to have my own life back.

I will keep researching the work from home ideas like the one I found recently and report back as to how it is going.

How To Use 411

411 has become a part of everyday culture. So much so that the service is now urban slang for "information" or "hot gossip." But what exactly is 411? If you don't already know, this explanation should put you in the picture.

The system originally existed as a telephone service. The service would be able to give you directory assistance and information on the location and telephone number of a business and person.

This task used to be handled completely by an operator. But now the initial call is directed to an automated service that can filter your call to the specific department. This helps to speed up the process and get you the answer you need faster.

411 is also available online. With the rapid rise of emailing and the decline in telephone conversations, 411 had to adapt. The website provides exactly the same service you can expect from the telephone. The only difference is that the online version is faster and more convenient than using the phone service.

A unique service is the reverse 411. This gives you the ability to find out the owner of a phone number and their location. This service comes attached with a fee and is available both online and on the phone. Be aware that this service is only available for phone numbers that are listed. The location of unlisted numbers will not be revealed.

This gives you the power to detect and trace a person who is harassing you on the telephone. This also lets you confirm the identity of someone who has contacted you regards a business opportunity.

Say for example, you receive an unexpected call from a number claiming to be your bank. They may inform you that your account has been jeopardized and that they require your details to resolve this issue. If you have no evidence that this is the case or the caller wants your pin number; hang up the call. Dial the reverse 411 number and you will be able to find the location and business name of the number and the truth will be revealed. By the way, no bank will ever ask you for you pin number in a phone conversation, so never surrender it.

The convenience and service of 411 can be a lifesaver when you are out and lost with your cell phone. They can tell you the location and address or a friend or business, which will make your life run a little smoother and take out some of the stress.

Jennifer R. Scott has been writing for over ten years on a broad range of topics. She has a background that includes such diverse areas as environmentalism, cooking, animal care, and technology. If you would like more information on [http://www.goto411.com/]411, please visit this site.

How to Start a Cell Phone Business

Starting a cell phone business can't be any easier. If you're a go getter like me then you have to check this out. There are a lot of business opportunities out there. So picking the right one can be a little nerve-racking. First thing to do would be to come up with a business plan. Write it down on scratch paper. Second thing I recommend would be to set your goals for your new business. Third part, how much money does it take to get started? Many newbie's always think about financing. Do not think of cost, because if you do you will never get on with your business plan. Try to put cost to the back of your head.

Starting a cell phone business should be simple and precise. I'm not telling you this because others have told me so. I personally run my own business; yes it takes some work to get off the ground. Guess what once it's off the ground and working then it just takes a couple of hours a week to keep it running. Act now don't wait till later do it now. Thinking about it and writing down plans on paper or typing it in your word pad. Do anything you think of toward your business. But don't procrastinate. Grab the bull by the horns, get things done. The cell phone business in my opinion is the easiest business to get into. How many people have cell phones, every soul on this planet has one? Grandma Grandpa, wife, husband, sister brother neighbor your name it they've got it. Stop working for someone building their business. Start working on your own business.

Build it slowly a little at a time. The time you have is priceless. I'm not saying to quit your job. Work just part-time at your at home kitchen counter business. Yes start off on the kitchen counter. You know what, a lot of businesses start that way. What about Bill Gates for instance. He started off in his mom and pops garage building junky computers. My hero, a kid who persisted onward and forward until he finally found the formula. Yes, Microsoft Windows. I can't say enough about his relentless drive to success. How about Steve Jobs, Apple computers. Remember something these were just kids in a garage having fun tinkering with bread boards and microchips. It doesn't matter how young or old you are. I believe everyone has the potential to become successful. Let me tell you something. I started a medical business and low and behold it was off and running so fast that I couldn't keep up with it. I had to let it go or quit my job and actively continue it permanently. Every week a new contract, next thing I needed help, before you know it I was off and running. It was too much for me. I guess the catering business would be about the same. Running up and down the street. If that's the kind of business you're interested in then go for it. Whatever floats your boat? My best advice is doing something you love. Something that doesn't take a lot of work, easy to maintain.

My philosophy is this. If you're working too hard it's not worth it. There's always something easier that pays a little or a lot more, for less work than you're doing now. We are not trying to reinvent the well. Learn how to start a business using cell phones.

7 Ways to Stay on Task and Get More Done

It's 9:30 P.M. and you're exhausted. You've been working all day...or at least you've felt like you've been working all day...but you have little to show for all your time. Projects are still sitting partially done, items on your "to do" list aren't marked off, the phone calls you meant to return weren't made...

And yet it's 9:30 PM, you've been at it for eight or more hours, and you're exhausted.

Huh? What gives?

Simply this:

Technology, while a wonderful thing (I sure wouldn't want to be without it), bombards us from every direction. It surrounds us, entices us and often robs us of our focus. We can become totally absorbed, spend huge amounts of time flitting from one task to another and can end up spinning our wheels all day long without even realizing it.
Chris Brogan of Entrepreneur Magazine claims we have a "new attention deficit disorder" of our own making. And he claims the machines that surround us and permit us to be thousand times more productive than the previous generation are the cause.

He makes the case that instead of plopping down on the couch with a bag of Doritos to wile away the evening in front of our televisions, we seem to spend every spare moment (and then some!) on our computers and phones. I agree these constant distractions pull our focus away from the task at hand, leaving us constantly "busy". And since technology is here to stay, I believe it's important that we take a proactive approach to keeping distractions at a minimum. If I may offer a few suggestions:

1. Habits make or break us. First and foremost, realize that much of what we embrace on a daily basis has come to us gradually...and become habit. Begin replacing those habits with new, more effective behaviors. Remember, it's going to take time, repetition, and DISCIPLINE to develop new habits to replace the old.

2. Email, friend or foe? Pick two or three (no more than three) SPECIFIC TIMES that you check your email. Allow enough time read the important ones and respond to those that need it. Resist the urge stockpile the less urgent stuff thinking that you'll get to "later". Chances are, you won't.

And please realize that in today's fast paced world, if an email is a month old, it's ancient history. The offer's over, the sale's ended, the get together has passed. Use the delete key...the delete key is your friend. (seriously...if it was REALLY important, you'd know about it by now)

Oh! And if you are subscribed to newsletters, etc. that you don't read...unsubscribe. One less distraction for you to deal with.

3. We have Voicemail for a Reason! Hello? Do I really have to elaborate on this one? Don't be a slave to your ringing phone. We have caller ID...if it's someone you really must talk to, pick it up. Otherwise, let it go to voicemail and stay on task. Call them back when it's convenient for YOU.

If the ringing phone bugs you, set the ringer to silent. And here's another cool thing... both my land line and my cell phone have the ability to send calls directly to voicemail... the phone doesn't even ring.

4. Facebook & Twitter. How many times a day do you really have to check to see what Sally Sue and Billy Bob think of your status post/Tweet? Like email, schedule a couple (no more than three) times a day when you hop on the social sites and interact with folks.

5. IE, Firefox and Chrome. Gotta love the improvements in Internet browsers over the past few years! Makes surfing and multi-tasking SO much easier with all those tabs! But really...keep open browsers and tabs at a minimum. Seeing the little notification numbers on your email or social media tab only serves to distract you from the task at hand.

6. Start and End Your Day with your "To-Do" list. Write down the tasks that you MUST accomplish each day, and work at your list until they are done. Review your list in the morning (you may need to make minor changes) and before quitting for the day, write your list for the next day. Having a list to follow makes it easier to regain focus should you get off track for some reason.

7. We are people! Probably the most important of all is to take time for real, face to face conversations with people. And when you're with them really BE with them. Don't keep glancing at your Blackberry or texting someone else in the middle of a conversation. Better yet, shut your phone OFF and let calls go to voicemail. Maintain eye contact and let the other person know you're really interested in what they have to say. You'll be surprised at how much impact this simple habit will have on your relationships... business and otherwise.

Sure, we're busy. And we seem to be getting busier all the time. But developing just one or two new habits may help "cure" you of the new attention deficit disorder. Besides, you may just end up freeing up enough time that you're actually able to relax.

4 Resources For Your Online Business You Shouldn't Be Without

If you are seeking extreme success as an online business owner, there are many online business applications, software, and resources for your online business that you should consider making an integral part of your toolkit. Here, I will highlight the top 4 tools every entrepreneur should have and use.

1. Digital Camera

A good quality digital camera is an essential part of any entrepreneur's toolkit. Whether you are selling products or selling yourself, it is true that a picture is worth a thousand words. Because you should be regularly blogging as well as publishing articles, you will want to have a camera handy to add photos to the copy you publish, as it enhances the impact. Your website and other online branding can also be enhanced by high quality imagery, so a decent digital camera (which can be had for under $100) can be an essential instrument to help you build your business.

2. Skype or Oovoo

In the more practical realm of business communication, Skype or Oovoo is a cost-effective and necessary business resource that makes it possible for you to be on the phone and online with your clients, team members, and prospective customers without running up a long distance phone bill or exceeding your minute allowance on your cell phone plan. Both Skype and Oovoo offer premium versions that allow for group video conferencing, but the free downloadable version of each program is typically enough to help any entrepreneur get launched without facing any high overhead costs.

3. Facebook and Twitter

Without social media marketing, you might as well not even open an online business, and with new functionality from Facebook for business pages as well as the partnership between Facebook and Bing, you need to create and maintain social media accounts. Because Twitter is not only an effective marketing application on its own but also can help you drive more fans to your Facebook page, I recommend getting started with both immediately. In fact, as soon as you secure your domain name, you should create your associated Twitter account and fan page.

4. Google Calendar

Staying organized continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing work at home entrepreneurs, and Google calendar is a free organization tool that is easy to use. You can plug in appointments, goals, daily tasks, and other events, and it will generate email reminders to you to help you stay on track and on task.

These four resources for your online business are certainly ones you should consider making an integral part of your toolkit.

7 Action Steps For Starting a WAHM Online Business

If you're on the verge of starting your own work-at-home online business, there are certain things you need to have in place to launch successfully and grow to profitability. You may have a shoestring budget or you may have been planning on this new venture for a while and have been saving for those start-up costs. Regardless, to start an online business on the right foot, be sure to have these 7 critical items in place as soon as possible:
Business name, domain and hosting. Know the type of business you wish to create and know the people that will be of most benefit from your services. Create a business name that is short and catchy and doesn't require you to have to spell it out to someone when speaking live. Buy a domain name that compliments your business name and then buy a hosting package to host your website. I love buying domain names from GoDaddy and for hosting, I recommend Blue Host and HostGator.
Business phone. There's no need for a business landline unless you truly do need one. Otherwise, use your cell phone to handle calls and sign up for Google Voice for a virtual number. You can have your business calls forwarded to your cell phone, and if you're not available to answer, you'll get a voice mail message emailed to you (voice mail is through Google Voice too!). On Smart Phones, there's an app for Google Voice that allows you to make outgoing calls from your Google Voice number so you never have to give out your cell phone number. Gotta love privacy! There are numerous benefits to this service so check them out (and guess what, it's free!).
Be legal. Check with local, state and federal laws and find out what you need to do to have a legal business. Just because your business will be online doesn't mean you may not need a business license or register with the government. Check into the laws where you live and set yourself up legally. Speak with a financial advisor on what you need to track for taxes. Consider hiring a bookkeeper to help with this.
Have reliable computer equipment. PC or MAC, doesn't make a difference, but do make sure you have a reliable, fast computer and keep it maintained regularly. With your business being online, you need to be able to connect to the Internet to check your email, to market your business, to launch products and programs, to name a few. You'll also need a printer for those times when you need to print out important documents. All-in-one machines are great as they also include scanners and fax machines. Note: fax machines aren't needed as there are many online fax services available for a low monthly cost, such as Ring Central.
Create an online presence. Once you have a domain and it is hosted, create your website. Even if it is just one page (also known as a landing page), have that one page available and allow people to give you their name and email address in change for something free. Write up a 10 page report on tips that your target market needs to know. This way you're building your list while the rest of your website is being created. This is called "list building" in the internet marketing world and should be one of the first skills you learn or outsource to an expert to complete for you.
Have office space. Working at home can be difficult with various needs being met by both home and business. If at all possible, have a separate office space which you can devote only to your business. This will be a good place to set up paper files (if needed - go 100% electronic if you can!), business manuals, conference binders that you attend and office supplies. Hang up photos of your loved ones to provide inspiration and motivation on WHY you're starting your own business to begin with. If you're not fortunate enough to have your own space, dedicate an area within a shared room that has a door and set up a desk, chair and computer. When you're in "work mode," of course have supervision available for the kids, if necessary, close the door to your office and let your family know that you're working and are NOT to be disturbed.
Have a Success Mindset. Being an entrepreneur is serious stuff. Let's face it. You're wanting to start your own online business first and foremost to allow you more time with your family and earn income. It's no fun making money that just covers your business expenses. To be successful, you must shift your mindset from employee to CEO. Demand respect from everyone. Don't treat your business as a hobby, but rather treat it like the money making machine you want it to be. Hire a coach or mentor to support you and guide you on your path to success and keep you in alignment with your goals.

Getting these seven steps in place as soon as possible will put you firmly on the path toward success. Being CEO of your own business can be very rewarding and the opportunities are endless. Start yourself off right!

Rural High Speed Internet Options - Don't Just Stick With Dial Up

When you are living out in a rural area, typically your high speed internet options are fairly limited. You might think you are stuck with dial up connections, but today there are many more options that you can consider using so that you can have faster internet speeds.

The most popular type of high speed internet for those in rural areas is satellite internet. This has as high initial cost as you need to purchase the dish and get someone to professionally install it to get you a good signal. These tend to have a higher monthly fee and data limits that you have to be careful with. You need to look for service plans that don't charge additional money if you go over the limit. The best ones will just slow down your speed as opposed to charging you more.

Some go for long range wifi. These are very tall antennas that you get installed to your home. These will pick up a wifi signal long range and are fairly reliable. You won't get as fast speeds as with other things but there are normally no limits on your data usage.

If you have a smart phone, you might be able to tether it to your computer. If you have 3g access in the rural area you live in, this is something you could use for your internet access. Most cell phone plans will limit you to about 5 gigabytes of data, but this is great compared to a dial up connection. It's not as fast as DSL or cable, but it's better than nothing.

There are also broadband cellular connections. These have very low initial cost and the monthly fees are competitive with most broadband plans. Look for plans without caps or contracts as these are starting to come out and become more popular. If you can't find one like this, you will be dealing with 5 gigabyte caps just like when tethering a phone.

Portability Is a Benefit Overlooked of an Internet Business - Gmail, Teamviewer, Skype, GoToMyPC

If you are establishing an Internet business be sure you keep it portable. You do not need to be tied down to your home PC. More tips about being portable.

There are a lot of benefits of an Internet business. I feel a major benefit, often overlooked, is portability. This is often not discovered by an Internet business proprietor until after they have been in business for some time. If the business is set up properly it can be accessed and operated from anywhere there is an Internet connection. The Internet has granted us to do this in a economic and efficient manner.

With the advent of technology; communications, meetings, presentations and monitoring can be done from anywhere. If you are looking to setup an Internet business keep this in mind because there will be a time when you may be on the road, for either personal or business vacation. There is no reason you are not able to just open up your shop from a hotel room or even an Internet cafe.

I will give you a rundown of what I use to make my business office portable. First, is a cell phone with a national plan. Your potential end users have to be able to make contact with you anytime. For email, I use Gmail. It has the best spam control and is up and functioning 99.99 percent of the time. You should not have to shell out for an email client as there are many free options around.

You will require a laptop in order to access the Internet. You just have to hookup to a wireless connection and you can be open for business. If you vacation anywhere in the US or even the world this should not be an issue. Some secured services you may have to pay for but in most cases you should be able to get connected for free of charge. I have at times driven to a motel parking lot, sat in my car and opened up shop. I tied into the wireless of the motel.

If some of you are uneasy about what is on your desktop at home you can also access this with various programs. Windows 7 is real convenient for a remote connection. I use GoToMyPc and am able to remotely access my desktop from wherever. On my laptop I can completely operate my desktop computer. You do not have to be left unconnected at anytime.

An added tool used for training is Teamviewer. There is a no cost version. With Teamviewer I am able to remotely access (with granted permission by remote user) anyone else's laptop. This includes transferring files between computers, via the Internet, and be able to take over the mouse of the other computer. Sometimes it is difficult to explain something over the phone and is much simpler to visually instruct my team members, on their computer, from my laptop. Teamviewer is a amazing tool and I highly recommend it.

If you are considering connecting to people by phone but want to save the minutes on your cell phone, get Skype. This tool is free and Skype to Skype calls are free. All you have to do is load the software on your computer and the person at the other end does the same. You can speak with each other, hands free, by using your microphone or headset. I must say this is so sweet and works worldwide. An extraordinary free service. Teamviewer in combination with Skype will sure to increase your productivity within your Internet business.

With the above tools I am completely portable and able to operate my Internet business from anywhere there is an Internet connection. I encourage you to get started on an Internet business, even if it is part time. As you are setting up keep in mind that you do want to be portable. This will not tie you down to your home computer or office. Both convenience and versatility are keys but do not get too wrapped up in your endeavours. Be sure you save time to enjoy your life.

Book Scouting Tools - 3 Tools You Cannot Do Without

When you are out looking for inventory you can sell online you will need the best book scouting tools you can find to help you make the most profit. There are 3 tools that are critical to add to your scouting trips.

First you will need a PDA or Cell Phone. You will need to use a cell phone to be able to look up prices live on the internet to determine the selling price of the book you are looking at. Otherwise you can use a PDA to download a database on that will allow you to check book prices offline. If you are a serious reseller you may want both just in case you cannot get an internet connection.

Second you will need Book Scouting Software. This is a program that you can use to access a database of the book prices and rankings. There are many of these available and most connect to a database on Amazon to help you determine the selling price of a book and how fast that book will sell.

Third you will need a Bar Code Scanner. A lot of book scouts will use only their cell phone and type in the ISBN to determine the information they need. This does work, however it is extremely slow and may lose you more money than it will make you. With a bar code scanner you simple point at the bar code and you get your information very quickly.
