Since starting my own business I have found the value in planning. Actually, I have found the value in having a plan in all that you do. It seems that in order to reach your goal you must put specific steps, tools, and instruments in place to help you get there. Have you place the proper tools, steps and instruments in place for your business?

We all go into business for one reason or another. However, there are some things that we all must do in order to make sure we stay in business and reach our goals and dreams. This is where your plan comes in. Once you have done all the basic steps of starting your business, such as finding a name, registration, business plan, etc, you now have to put a plan in place in order to reach that bottom line. Whatever the goal is for your bottom line you will not get there unless you put specific steps in place.

So how do you make sure you have a strategic plan? Simple! Ask your self a few questions. What is the purpose of this step? Where will this step lead me? How much closer will it get me to my goal? These questions will help you stay focus on your ultimate goal and help you to decide whether or not the steps you are making are worth it. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely projects and tasks that must get done that don't seem to get us closer to our goal, in fact they may be time suckers that pull us away from our goals, and these are tasks you may want to consider outsourcing. However, knowing and outlining the exact road you need to take to get you to your destination will help you stay on track and get there in a timely manner.

So how do we make these strategic plans? By expanding on our goals and turning them into detailed projects. For example, if your primary goal is to make $500 for the month of June, you need to create sub-goals that will help you to achieve your primary goal. One sub-goal may be to have a sale on products and/or services for the 3 weeks. Now turn that goal into a project. What do you need to do to get this done? You need to market your sale. How are you going to market this sale? How often will your market? What are some of the things you can do during your marketing time? And the plan continues. By doing this you have set out a road map for yourself so that you can achieve your primary goal of $500. Now there may be additional sub-goals and projects that can be done to achieve that $500, but I just wanted to give you a quick example. By expanding on your goals you will realize everything you need to do, how much time it will take, and by asking the 3 questions mentioned in the above paragraph you can decided if you can possibly outsource a specific task so you can spend more time on items that get you closer to your primary goal. Strategic planning can be, and should be, used throughout your entire business.

Remember a strategic plan is a plan put in place to help you achieve a specific goal. You may have planned out your day for today that may include making phone calls, checking your e-mail, client meetings, and so forth. However really look at your plan for today and ask yourself if these activities will get you closer to your goal. Also ask your self can you expand on these goals so that you can be more effective and see results sooner. So once again I ask you, how strategic is your plan for your business?
