Working From Home? Kill the Distractions!

1. Instant Messaging: When I worked at an office, instant messaging wasn't allowed. When I am at home, I can have it running whenever I want. It is helpful as a tool for communication, especially with colleagues but it is also a time killer. Nothing is worse than being in the middle of a task and you get messages from your friends about the weekend. It kills your momentum and can make the work day drag on.

An easy fix is to consolidate your instant messaging. If all your friends use MSN then just log onto that when you have free time. Talk your colleagues into moving to another platform like AIM or Skype. That way you can be sure it is only work related conversations you engage in. You can even turn instant messaging off altogether when you are doing a time sensitive task.

2. Family: We all love our families of course. It is hard to look at them as a distraction. Sometimes though it is true. Whether you live with a wife, kids, brother, sister or even a parent, you need to set boundaries. I look at it like this, if I was working at a full time job my family wouldn't have access to me. An emergency is something different of course, but general distractions to chat, or ask questions can kill productivity.

The fix is to set some boundaries. It can be hard because you don't want to treat your family like this, but if you tell your family member that you need a couple hours to go heads down they will be cool with it. One of the best benefits of working at home is more family time, so requesting some peace and quiet during big tasks should be no problem. In fact compared to a full time job it is a great compromise.

3. Pets: I think there are advantages in having pets at your home office and I often refer to my dogs as "office dogs". That said just like with family they can be a distractions. Sometimes they want your attention and they will bark or even nudge you. Just last week I was doing some intricate work in Fireworks. I was using the eraser tool and had to be perfect when BAM, my dog hits my arm. Thankfully I can use "undo" but it still cost me time and patience.

If your pets are trained properly it can be pretty easy to coexist. First off just make their bathroom breaks and meals coincide with yours. When I am going to the bathroom I see if my dogs need to. When I eat I can feed them and take them out for a bit of exercise. After awhile they will get used to the routine. In fact, now that I do this, they basically sleep on the floor content, while I work away.

No one wants to look at their friends messaging them, family and pets as distractions - but they can be for the home business owner. It is a fact. Luckily, there are some really easy steps you can take to avoid the distractions. Try my above suggestions and I am sure your days will be more productive.

Setting the Scene With Teamwork

So when my partner came home and suggested that we should go out for lunch and then do the family shopping I was in two minds about going. You know that feeling? If I stay here I might just stare at the page and think that I could have gone out, but if I go out I might not have time to do the article when I get back. Rightly or wrongly, I decided on lunch and shopping with my partner.

On the way back from the supermarket, we took a detour. My partner is involved with a local amateur theatre group, he doesn't have the time available for rehearsals so is rarely in the shows, but he does get involved with set design and building.

The latest production for the theatre group is 'Noises Off' - an ambitious project for a small local group, not least because the set has to revolve twice during the performance. Our detour was to a local warehouse which has been rented for a few weeks to enable the building of the revolving set prior to loading it into the theatre on the week of the show. I am always impressed by how much work amateur groups put in for a show that will only have four performances.

We looked in to see what progress was being made on the set. It looks very much like the computer model and there were people busily painting handrails and cutting up plywood. We stayed just long enough to admire their handiwork and check what time we would be required at the end of the week. Trevor will be there all day on Friday to help break the set into its constituent parts ready for moving. On Saturday we will both be there to load those parts onto a trailer and then meet it at the theatre for reassembly on the stage.

So the whole process is almost finished and in a couple of weeks we will be pulling the set apart so that the wood and flats can be stored for use in future productions.

But they didn't get to this stage overnight. It is some four or five months since it was first discussed. My partner started thinking about the design of the stage about twelve weeks ago. The rotation between the first and second act, then back again between the second and third was a logistical and engineering issue with health and safety thrown in for good measure. Trevor got involved because he has a background in engineering and computer graphics. There were a number of evenings where he sat at his computer with colleagues from the theatre group so they could discuss the design, each from their own experience, to finally come up with something that could safely be rotated while meeting the requirements for the action that needs to take place.

It has taken a lot of planning and hard work to get to this stage, but no-one had to do it on their own. Information and experience was shared at every stage, and then everyone moved in to do the physical construction work. It was a group effort with each person making a contribution.

When I look at internet projects, that is what I want to find. I'm ready to make my contribution, but I expect there to be other people with different expertise who can give advice and suggestions based on their experiences. I think I've finally found it.

You sign up with a MLM company as an associate / distributor. Now depending on the company you may have to pay a fee to join. The structure is designed to create a marketing and sales force by paying you not only for sales that you personally make, but also for the sales of other people you get to join the company.

This then allows you to create a down line of distributors and a hierarchy of multiple levels of compensation in the form of a pyramid.

Now depending on the company you may have to become a consumer of the products e.g. certain juice MLM companies require you to order a certain amount of the product monthly - also known as an autoship.

The way you make money is to invite other people to join the company, that person then becomes your down line and you receive a percentage of the sales they then generate.

Some MLM compensation plans can go several levels deep so you would earn 10% on level 1, 5 % on level 2 and so forth depending on how deep the pyramid structure goes.

The most important things to remember when joining any MLM are:-

1) Find out who the Founders are and study the company's track record.
2) Learn exactly what the product is / what are it's benefits.
3) Ask questions about the company - it's products - the compensation plan.
4) Understand any restrictions on selling / Can the product be sold worldwide
5) Talk to other distributors / associates already with the Company
6) Consider using a friend as a Neutral party, ask them how the opportunity looks
7) Take your time to study everything, work out what skills you may need to learn

Always remember that you are only going to be a successful if the company provides you with the support and training required to make sales.

There are many ways to try and generate prospects to your business;-

Word of mouth - talking to friends and colleagues,
Using Social Media sites such as MySpace, YouTube and Facebook,
Leaving flyers around town e.g. cafes, bookshops.
Putting ads in your Local Paper e.g. in the jobs section.
On-line ads e.g. Craigslist,
On-line forums and Blogs.

Please bear in mind that if you do join a company - it will take time for you to learn the ropes and start making sales. Talk to the person who signed you up daily, attend webinars and do something in your business everyday.

How to Start a Home Business

Money is the answer to all things, when you have it; it makes your life easier. Granted it can't buy happiness, however, it can buy a whole lot of comfort and cause every financial worry you've ever had to disappear. Your happiness on the other hand is a matter of choice, yours!

Owning a home business is both rewarding and nerve racking, however, if you're still determined here are some tips for you, namely:-

1. Why do you want to start a home business? You may not know it, but the reason for setting up a home business is extremely important. Why? Because when you need encouraging or you want to give up, it is this reason that will keep you going. Ask yourself, am I passionate about this business, do I want a residual income and can I commit to making it happen? If the answer is yes, yes and yes, then you are ready to get a move on.

2. Which one is good for you? Now, take it from me any old home business will just not do, you need to find your passion, what subject matter will keep you motivated and committed (and no money isn't it!) You have to have something other than money that will hold your interest and get your customers to come to you. A lot of people these days are looking to make a residual income and home businesses are proving very popular as they are very cheap, quick and easy to start.

3. Can you afford it? Remember I mentioned cheap to start? Any home business that will cost you an arm and a leg has just lost their home business standing - by their very nature should be cheap, quick and easy to run, take it from me.

4. Who is it geared towards? When I first started out in the home business arena I had no idea about this fact, every successful home business owner knows you have to have a market; and in addition to having a market; a supply and demand for what you are offering, this is what is called a niche.

5. What benefit will your business afford your customers? Now don't be shy, this is where you can say money. If your home business can't help people make a residual income and or meet their deepest desire and need, they won't be interested.

6. How do you get your customers interested in what you're offering? Simple, find out what it is they want and provide it. You can find this out by speaking to people like friends, family, colleagues and Google the area of interest to get an idea.

7. Turnkey or no turnkey, which is best for you? The term is used for a business which is ready to use, like becoming a Love Nurture affiliate, just go to the affiliate page and take it from there - you could be up and running in minutes! And the opposite would be the case for a non turnkey home business which would not be ready to use and therefore not what I would advise.

Finally, it's never a good idea to change a system that already works, when you find a business that already works for others, stick to the format. If you try to reinvent the wheel or change it you are setting yourself up for failure and for you failure is not an option!

Your upline by now, would be telling you to write a list of all the names of people that you know from friends, family, friends of friends, work colleagues, old school peers, your gardener, your dentist, your doctor, your "anyone who can fog a mirror". So you'd probably write them all down and realise you know in excess of 200 people (and if you can't get near that amount, you'd be told not to buy into sick excuses, think harder and stop procrastinating).

Next thing, you're hurting from the initial outlay to buy into your distributorship position but you're on a buzz so you'll do what every upline tells you to do such as buying magazines, dvds, third-party hard copy material and to subscribe to an online multimedia website that will give you all the business building tools you need in order to generate income on a very part-time basis. Let us face it, it hurts, but sounds right because you have to build your business in a duplicable way.

Now, you go out to everyone you know, and you tell them to check out your business and that you're not going to talk too much about it so you let them read a magazine or watch a dvd. Then next comes the follow up where you politely check where they have gone with the information and try not to seem desperate in wanting their business. So then, after spending 100s of dollars in your initial blast to prospects, you find that you've literally sponsored...NOBODY. If you did, it probably took a hell load of coercing and convincing, or possibly reliance on business rapport.

What went wrong? Typical explanations you'll get from some upline network marketing professionals include some of the following:

> You got to have better posture and make it seem they need you more than you need them.
> The business is not that simple, you actually got to personally develop as an attractive person that people want to follow (i.e. if you suck, maybe focus on personal development rather than network marketing)
> You have to keep up the exposures and buy more magazines, because building your business is about activity.
> You have to run home introductions and meetings where you invite many prospects at once and ride the wave of social proofing. Basically, if one person joins then some of the other moths will follow.
> Meet people in social scenes and be a talent eagle (prey on worthy cold prospects).
> My way or the highway.

So you're in a bit of a dip at this point. The vision of success and earning an income that overtakes your full-time job is gradually slipping away. You're frustrated but you've also accepted that it is most likely your fault since in mlm, it is literally all about you. So you spend a few months reading books like Rich Dad Poor Dad, The Science of Network Marketing and the timeless Think & Grow Rich. They provide you with awesome insight into you, and touch on heavy aspects of spirituality. Now you're regurgitating lines of spirituality and success as if you're a walking Buddha on earth. You're totally in the lingo and you can see the amount of people in the corporate world who most like do not know what you know.

But heres the thing, you feel powerful but you're still not any richer. That guy working next to you in a booth is probably enjoying his weekend more and possibly building a better solid network of friends than you because you've scarred everyone by letting them know you're in the stigmatized network marketing industry.

What the leaders did not let you know, is that being successful in network marketing literally has nothing to do with network marketing.

Entrepreneurship formulae all depend purely on how you attractive you are as a person in people's minds. People join people, not businesses. It takes time, patience and it is a 5-year marathon to success contrary to the perception that you'd be rich quick due to the mlm multiplier. It is simple:
1. Be an attractive educated business leader and get over your ego.
2. Do favours and give people value for free before you even think of asking them to do something like look at your business.
3. Continue doing them favours like you would for your own beloved family.
4. Monetize on the relational equity you have built.

People have built a large business in network marketing in record breaking times, but if you look closer you'll find a lot of them are actually bald...so go figure.
