The Chameleons Have All The Wealth

Learn more about people than you do about products and you will be wealthy. I don't know who to credit that statement to because I've heard so many great and wealthy people state it, but all I know is that it's true. I don't care if you're a CEO with 1 or 100 employees, a solo entrepreneur, a homeschooling mom of 6, a college professor, or sitting in a cubicle hiding out from your micro managing boss. If you want to be successful in any area of your life you must begin to learn more about other people... because, hold on to your hats... it's not them, it really is YOU!

Your one and only job is to understand WHO you are talking to and to speak to them in the language that they understand. Now this will require you to step outside of your comfort zone. Yes, you will have to learn new skills but you can learn them, it's not hard at all. In this article I will give you a brief overview of the four personality types that you will most likely encounter.

Not only will you encounter these personality types in others but you also already possess them yourself. Many trainers and leaders have taught these using colors, or elements, gems, shoes, cars, food and I'm sure some others that I haven't heard of yet but the simplest for me is the colors. Yellow, red, blue, and green. What exactly does this mean? This is not only important to understand other people but also in understanding yourself. Why do you do the things you do and say? Why you always have friction with THAT person, it's pretty cool once you understand it. Anyway let's begin.

Yellows, which make up 35% of the population, are generally indirect in their communication and open with regards to their relationships. They want to know all about you. Some of their strengths are they are fabulous listeners, dependable, very nurturing, patient, systematic and have a strong desire to help others. Some of their weaknesses are that they are overly sensitive, lack self confidence, aren't assertive and they tend to avoid conflicts which makes them easy doormats.

Blues, make up 15% of the population and are generally direct in their communication and open in their relationships. They are the life of the party and if you want to keep their attention then you better make it fun! They will give you their opinion without being asked and tend to be the ones who everyone is attracted to. Why? Because their FUN. Some of their strengths are they are great motivators, have high energy, are persuasive and can tell a great story. Some of their weaknesses are they have short attention spans, can be unfocused, unorganized and talk way too much.

Green, make up 35% of the population, and are generally indirect in their communication and closed with regards in their relationships. Greens want the facts and that's all! They want all their questions answered and then and only then will they make a decision. Greens tend to be very organized, follow the rules, are punctual, detailed oriented and will carry out a task to the letter. Some of their weaknesses are that they tend to procrastinate, are hard to please, over think most things and are prone to depression.

Finally, that leaves the Reds, which are 15% of the population. They are direct in their communication and closed in their relationships. These are the A type personalities and they are driven by the challenge. The world revolves around them and you are lucky to have met them. Some of their strengths are they are leaders, confident, focused, competitive, aggressive, goal and task oriented. Some of their weakness are they tend to be impatient, have huge egos, and can be seen as obnoxious, although a Red would be offended if you implied they had flaws.

That's it in a nutshell. What color are you? There are books and entire workshops that go much deeper in the personality types but this is a great start. Once you can identify where you fall among the four personalities then you can learn HOW to relate to the other three. Keep in mind that we all possess these personalities but we have one that is definitely more dominant and that's the one we need to understand. Your product isn't soap, juice, silver, lipstick, pots and pans or coffee. Your product is people...learn more about people than your product and you will become wealthy. 5 Qualities You Must Have to Be an Online Freelancer

You must have already decided to become an online freelancer if you are reading this. There is a good deal of opportunity in that, and you are doing well to take it seriously. However, at the same time, you should realize that you need to have a few qualities if you really want to shine here. Here are the traits that you absolutely cannot do without.

Timeliness

You need to be time-conscious. Every job needs to be done according to a fixed timeline. These deadlines are set when you bid for the job. You have the liberty to select your deadlines, but once you have selected it, you should make sure that you abide by it. Remember that every task you take up is part of a business, and your punctuality plays a big role in its success. So, if you want to last as an online freelancer, it is important that you can stick to your commitment of your timeliness and don't jeopardize your employer's business prospects.

Great Communication

When you are working online, you communicate only through email or instant messengers. Apart from that, the client does not know you. Hence, you have to ensure constant communication. Even if there is nothing to say on a particular day of the assignment, you should drop in an email so that the client is reassured you are working. You should make yourself visible on chat (if you aren't available already). That little green dot is highly reassuring to people who have hired you from another part of the world-they understand you are working and accessible when they need you.

An Eye for Perfection

Another important trait that you must have is that you should strive for perfection. Nobody can be perfect, but you should make every attempt to be error-free in your work. If you don't understand something about the project brief, go ahead and ask questions. That makes for great communication as well as helps you be better in the job you have taken up.

Providing More than the Money's Worth

This is a fine trait to have-you should always help your client as much as possible. If they have asked for something, and you feel there is something more you can do without putting in too much effort, then go ahead and ask if you can do it. Don't worry about getting paid for walking the extra mile. You are going to get enough brownie points in doing that, in the form of excellent reviews that boost your future prospects on the jobsite, and some clients also give monetary bonuses.

A Will to Learn

You always need to keep learning. A freelancer's education is never complete. Technology is changing rapidly; that's one thing you have to keep abreast of. You may be used to a particular kind of system, but be open to ideas. New systems are getting developed around you all the time. People who do the best in online freelancer jobs are the ones that are always ahead of the pack.

The corporate world has widely benefitted out of computers. Banks, specifically have gained superiority in terms of storage, recording and safekeeping data on somebody else's riches. Imagine a life of manually computing millions of money, keeping track of every transactions and likewise, manually entering such data into logbooks. The margin of error is considerably huge that a depositor gets scared away knowing the fact that his lifetime savings record might get mixed-up with somebody else's bank accounts. Computers do not only provide security to bankers but speed-up transactions conveniently and accurately.

The world of communication has gotten better because of computers as technology developed methods such that telephones, modems and the sort functioned jointly to send messages even to remotes areas in the world. The electronic mail or email permitted communication to travel as fast as the light such that in an instant, the recipient at the end receives the message that in the absence of computers and internet, takes days before such communication letters are read. Thus the internet did not only made the world a global village by making time and distance immaterial but it also created a global language - the language of computers.

The Productivity Phoenix - From the Ashes of the Inbox True Online Collaboration Is Born

In the electronic age we have acquired a new master and it is not our boss, our spouse, or any person for that matter. It is our inbox. Even in our mobile universe, with our little magic black rectangles, we have become slaves to the masses of emails new and old. Along side this beast of burden are smaller companions, text and instant messaging. While on the surface they all seem like benefits, they are isolated and leave us struggling to maintain a pulse on our content. It is time for another advancement in communication, and while it started with social networks, online project management and collaboration systems it needs to advance to become a true layer on the web.

With every advancement in technology, especially in communication, comes another requirement related to the speed in which we communicate. When horse could not get our messages across the land fast enough, locomotion was the next step. When telephone lines gave us a global network, it had to become wireless to finally suit our needs. Then came the miracles of the internet. Now with social networking we trigger both the need for and the ability to manifest this next step in our electronic evolution. Our social layer and mobile agility are established. They have made communication instantaneous, multi-directional and accessible from anywhere. Yet we are still burdened by repositories and receivers that are archaic. This is why a new layer is forming on the net. A productivity layer that combines the best in social interaction with project collaboration. This new layer is the next phase in how we get things done.

There are still those who wonder what shape it will take. The real question for any new concept, especially a potential game changer, is what does it eliminate. This productivity layer will eliminate three things:
Lag between execution of tasks or objectives - In today's business environment, when others are taking action we sit and passively wait for things to get done. With group collaboration there is a clear understanding of what is happening in any project environment in realtime. We can inquire and get notified upon change and completion; waiting will only happen by option.
The segregation of information, data and documentation - Even with online email systems and file servers, most of us are still working from independent silos called inbox and sent folders. When the productivity layer becomes the information depot, you know have a structured group environment to review and source all data. With it being in the cloud, it can be accessed from anywhere.
True mobile agility - With the integration of RSS, Text and Mobile applications, the productivity layer will be as accessible as any social network. Managing work will be as easy as getting and sharing your Twitter and Facebook updates.

This is the next stage in process and execution. We will drive efforts through a transparent layer similar to how we drive entertainment on the social network. We have found purpose in groups again, but now instead of the boardroom we will meet in the Teambox. I will continue to share more about this in greater detail over the next few weeks, but for now here is the conceptual vision of how change will come.
The integration of a multitude of applications in the cloud. Each of them offering a different set of features that compliment each other. The connected set of applications will help any organization easily build their productivity framework for a relatively low cost.
Email communication will change. We will deliver notifications of data instead of the data itself. The data instead will move to the repository in the cloud.
We will start to see what I have dubbed Procial Networks pop up. These will be networks that like social networks allow us to collaborate in rapid group natured manners, but the communication will be around getting things done.
The time it takes to accomplish efforts will be reduced in relation to the absence of time between communications. With immediate updates and responses what now takes minutes will soon take seconds.
People en masse will start to enjoy the work environment again as social aspects of collaboration and gaming layers are introduced.

We have moved quickly in the last two decades as the internet has taken a hold of our business and social universe. The thing to keep in mind is a 20-year-old is still a child in many ways and there is a maturity yet to come.

Karl Goldfield is Collaboration Agent 001 with Teambox. For the last 30 years he has been playing on the bleeding edge of computing and internet technology. From Sales Teams to Consulting he has been managing teams for the last 15 years.

Now with Teambox he would like you to join us in our goals to change the way people work by making it easier and more fun to get things done. Through collaboration and better project management we intend to help everyone with this objective. http://teambox.com http://teambox.com/projects/communicate-with-the-teambox-collaboration-agents

Google's Unpublished Style Guide

I have been using Internet regularly for the last 11-12 years. So far, I would have signed-up for at least a hundred web services such as emails and ezines, inattentively checking out the "terms and conditions" checkbox - that is, without a slightest understanding of what their terms condition, and what their conditions term. I don't bother because: one, I do not perceive big security threat, and two, I am allergic to the legalese of those privacy policies.

However, Google is one among the very few exceptions to my "turn a blind eye" policy, when it comes to reading user information online. I read almost everything Google says to the users of its mails, documents, etc for, even its privacy policy highlights are as engaging as its renowned design or software principles to read. To me, Google's language, just like its products, is a key factor that positions the company as an innovator.

Google may not come up with a style guide yet - maybe, never on its own. But, if at all there is going to be one, it should not be about how Google uses simple and clear language alone. The secret to better language and consistency lies in better integration of corporate or management thinking - that goes into developing a product - into developing content. Google's excellence in communication can be attributed to its styling of its talking to match its thinking style.

The main reason why there could be mis-alignments between words and expressions of a company, and its products, could be that the company in question does not think former as a product by itself. Hence, no investment in terms of time, effort and money, go into corporate communication. Google produces thousands of pages - it blogs, publishes help files, moderates forums, every day. But the content, despite of quantity, give an impression that they are developed under the influence of its corporate philosophy, just like how its products like Gmail are.

The other side of the coin is products. Goodness of a product play a major role in the reach of language. A prominent example is Sony's naming of Walkman. When Masaru Ibuka, co-founder of Sony, produced a pocket-sized personal stereo, he chose to name it "Walkman". Though it's a noun, the name of a proprietary product, his representatives who were to market the product were skeptic about the name, because it was grammatically incorrect. However, Walkman as a word, since it echoed the sense of freedom the product offered, and the product, were universal hit. In 1986 Oxford English Dictionary included Walkman in its vocabulary.

While, there are Codes of Conduct to govern business practices, and guidelines for product design, why should companies not pay attention to evolve an official style guide for corporate communication that would effectively contribute to corporate brand building? After all, communication is the third most important facet of a corporate personality - the other two, being: product and business practices. In fact, communication - both, internal and external - is directly responsible for brand building.

I would say that the purpose of a corporate style guide - unlike the AP Style Guides of the world that concern mainly about correct usage of language, is to offer better choices of words and expressions for a company's stakeholders that reflect the style of thinking and style of action that can be captured in its product design and business practices, respectively.

Since there is no understanding of the need for such an integrated communication that goes beyond language, companies do not put the required effort to better communication. Though, management organises structured meetings for product development, no where there is news about high level meetings for corporate social communication.

I think the starting point could be assigning a communication professional to come up with a corporate style guide for all written communication. Though the grammar part of it can come from Chicago Manual of Style, the definition of industry terms, product positioning, etc can be created indigenously to make sure that the choice of words go well with the characters of the company.

Unique Steps to Guard Your Credibility Online - It is Easy to Lose

Credibility is an asset that must be gained. If anything must be gained by words and actions then it certainly can be lost by words and actions as well.

Credibility can certainly be lost much easier than it can be gained in the first place.

Credibility is gained by establishing oneself as a reliable source of information that is both accurate and timely. Credibility is also established by operating one's business with an ethical behavior that demands fair and equitable treatment of customers, suppliers and joint venture partners.

There are right ways and wrong ways to do everything. Here are some right ways to gain credibility and some right ways to lose that credibility as well:

You will gain credibility by:

Establishing yourself as a good member of a group
Posting accurate information that is helpful and useful to those who will be reading it
Including your URL, name and logo on every single product which you produce
Providing a great support system for your product
Answering questions and providing insight on how to use your product
 Keeping the communication lines open
Taking full responsibility if anything goes wrong with your product
Making everything within your power to fix your mistakes

You will lose credibility by:

Moving into a blog or forum without first putting forth any effort to become a good member
Posting blatant advertisement on the site as a tidal wave
Creating information that doesn't offer anything new or helpful
Leaving out your URL, name or logo on your products
Leaving out any kind of support system
Forgetting all about communication with your customers
Considering support as a waste of time. They bought it....its their problem.
Never accept any responsibility yourself. It could cost you money
Always (or even once) blame others. The video guy or your grandmother...who cares

Remember this: Gaining credibility takes time and effort. Losing credibility is as easy as falling off a log!

Communication and Your Business Success

If your business is struggling your communication skills just might be to blame. It does not matter what business you are in, because at some level you are always in the people business. A business relies on customers to produce income. Even when a business is on auto-pilot you are still dealing with people on some level. Your communication skills are thus vital to getting customers, keeping customers, and getting your business on auto-pilot in the first place.

Second, if your business involves having a team, then you will need to use those communication skills to keep your team informed. You'll also need it to keep your team motivated and producing, which isn't always easy.

In either case, you're often trying to communicate and build relationships over the internet. Therefore, there are two sets of skills you will need to work on in order to succeed. The first set are your traffic generation and pre-selling tools, which help your customers identify with you.

The second skill is the skill of regular, non-invasive contact. Relationships are built through contact, even if you don't know the other person face to face. If you can master knowing when you should contact different levels of people that are involved with your business both on and offline you'll be ahead of people who let those contacts drift away unless an exchange of money is involved.

There are many books, web pages, and other resources that can help you learn these skills. It also helps to join a business that will mentor you into acquiring these skills, as well. Believe it or not both forms of communication involve easy to learn, step-by-step processes that can be mastered and planned to your best advantage.

Work at Home Communication Tips

Working at home can cause a lot of obstacles when it comes to communication. Chances are you aren't sitting at your desk 24/7, even if that is what some expect. It is imperative to any online business to provide a timely response to any inquiries. Here are a few tips:

Email - In the virtual world, most communication is done via email these days. It is important to answer emails in a timely fashion. If you are unable to answer emails within 12-24 hours, it is always nice from the contractor's point of view to know what to expect. This can be done by adding a note to your Contact Page saying something to the effect, "All emails will be answered within 48 hours with the exception of weekends and holidays." This lets them know right away when to expect follow-up.

Phone - When I am working on a client's project, I try not to allow their time to be interrupted. If I have to stop and start, that is going to cut down on efficiency. Even if it is just a few minutes to get back in the groove and remember what I was doing, that is time the client is going to be paying for. For that reason, I don't always answer the phone. Phone calls can be dealt with in the same way as email. Have your outgoing message set a timeframe for response.

Comments and DMs - If you are blogging and marketing via social media for your business, fan page and blog comments and twitter DMs can be easy to put off. This is big no-no. Spend 15 or 20 minutes at the end of each day to check your marketing avenues for anything that needs addressed. Leaving questions or concerns floating around without responses doesn't look very good. If you have a spam filter on your blog, check it often. I find a lot of comments in there that are not spam. You don't want followers thinking you are blocking their comments.
