Working From Home Compared to Running a Retail Convenience Store
Working from home has a lot of benefits, especially when I compare it to our (my girlfriend and I) Country Store business. Here are some of the cons that we have running a retail brick and mortar business. The first con is you have to have employees. It is hard to find people you can trust. I have had some major problems with employees over the years. Stealing is the biggest problem. Another problem with employees is when they call in; we have to be there. That means staying close by, no vacations for us. Another con to have a retail store is sales taxes. If you accept EBT, (aka Food Stamps), if you have the Lottery, and if you sale gas, it is a bunch of paper work. I finally hired an accountant to take care of it for me every month. Another con is robberies. My store has been robbed 4 times at gunpoint. My girlfriend was working one night, and our daughter was working on another night. The other employees of course quit right after they got robbed, which I cannot blame them. In fact, our daughter quit, too. She was only working at our store until she found another job. We did not want her down there, but she needed the money. Another con is dealing with DHEC (Department of Health and Environmental Control). Some of DHEC's rules make no sense. For example, our store is a metal building. We decided to insulate and use the metal inside for our walls instead of sheet rock. It would be a lot easier to clean don't you think. Well they made us put sheet rock up around the mop sink and other places, saying you have to be able to clean it soap and water and a rag. Seems to me you can use that on metal. We have had problems with drug dealers wanting to sell their drugs in our parking lot. It took us a while to clean it up, but every once in a while someone will try to park over to the side and make a deal. The last one we caught was trying to sell to a 16 year old. Needless to say, he found out we do not play. Our store is out in the country. It is best for us to buy things at Wal-Mart, grocery stores, and the dollar store to resell it. We have some vendors that we buy from, but when it comes to grocery products we can get it a lot cheaper getting ourselves. That being said, it is another con to owning the business. It is a chore to go shopping for $500 - $1000 worth of product. It is a lot to price, and it is a lot of work. That brings me to the conclusion. Having a home-based business is wonderful. I do not worry about sales taxes. I do not have to worry about employees, getting robbed, or anything like that. Plus, the tax write offs are great.
