What Equipment Do I Need to Start My Home Baking Business?

What Equipment Do I Need to Start My Baking Business?

Here's the good news: using only the most basic equipment, found in most home kitchens, you can begin to bake for profit today!

What Do You Consider "Basic Equipment"?

1. An oven - your basic home oven will usually do fine. If you are buying a new oven consider choosing a convection oven as it will be a great asset. However, I have done all of my baking with a regular home oven. My mother has two wonderful convection ovens in her kitchen and I get to use those occasionally when I visit her.

2. A mixer - What kind of mixer do you need? A commercial mixer is totally unnecessary (I have one, a giant Hobart, which I rarely use). Any mixer will be a great benefit.

A company called Bosch makes a wonderful mixer. The center column makes it a little harder to clean. Your baking results, however, will be impressive. I have a Bosch which is great for bread baking and almost anything else you want to bake.

I also have a Kitchen Aid stand mixer which I use almost daily. I like it best for cookies and cakes.

Other Equipment Found in Most Kitchens:
A large bowl.
Measuring cups and measuring spoons.
A cookie sheet.
A loaf pan (you can always free-form your loaves if you don't have one).
Muffin pans
Cake pans - round, 13"x9", or half sheet. (Remember: use what you have!)
A nut chopper will be a great time and frustration saver. A food processor will work well too!

Kitchen Scale
A basic scale will be a great addition to your baking business. It will give you better accuracy and consistency in your products. I use one that handles weights up to 10 pounds.

Personal Favorites - Things I Have Used The Most
In my baking business I have used a 16 inch round cake pan more than any other baking pan. I have used it almost exclusively to make party cookies. I have a 1/4 sheet and a 1/2 sheet cake pan that I used until I finally wore them out and had to purchase others. A jelly roll pan has also been a great benefit - although I have never actually made a jelly roll. I also have a set of round pans and a set of heart-shaped pans which have been wonderful to have.

I recommend that you start with what you have on hand because that is what you already use and are familiar with. You can then add equipment as your business grows and as the need for other equipment presents itself.

Make Money Selling Cookies

One of the first thing a young girl learns to bake is cookies. I am not sure whether that is because of her interest in baking or in eating them. If you enjoy baking cookies then maybe you would like to market them for extra income. In this article I will share with you several different types of cookies I have baked for profit.

Party Cookies
First we will talk about Party Cookies. I have done a lot of business by making party cookies. What are party cookies? They are large, usually round cookies which I decorate as I would a cake. Personally, I only make chocolate chip party cookies, but you may choose to make oatmeal and raisin, sugar, or peanut butter. It is your choice! Sometimes I make them into a clown face. Sometimes I use a 1/4 sheet pan or a jelly roll pan and make them into a football field. Sometimes I decorate them with roses and whatever messages my customers may want. (Happy Birthday, Anniversary, Retirement, We Will Miss You, etc.)

Valentine's Day Party Cookies
I make hundreds of heart shaped cookies nearly every year for Valentine's Day. These are pre-orders with custom messages. I have a set of 4 heart-shaped cake pans in different sizes, so that is what I bake my cookies in. I take pre-orders for the cookies, and then order supplies based on how many cookies I have sold. Of course, I prepare a few extra since I may be able to sell more. I bake a sample and show it to those I think would be interested in placing an order. I have used this with church and home school groups as a fundraiser too (so they take the orders). I have always sold many extras. Also, do not underestimate the influence of word of mouth. Share what you are doing and it will be well received.

Team Sports
I have made football shaped individual cookies for ball teams with each player's number on one cookie. You could also make basketball shaped ones with the round cutter. These I made out of chocolate chip cookie dough but you could easily make them out of sugar cookie dough or gingerbread.

Sugar or Ginger Cookies
I have made seasonal shaped individual sugar cookies for a bank office and some libraries. Some shapes I have used are flowers, crosses, butterflies, hearts, clovers, stars, dragon flies, buffalo, bears, leaves, etc. I sprinkle these with colored sugar before I bake them. You may want to make gingerbread men and sell them around the holidays. I usually sell these by the dozen.

There are many ways to make money with baking, selling cookies is just one of them.

Happy Baking,

Your Gift Basket Business: Adding Value With Printed Labels

One of the competitive edges I have is that I'm able to do any type of labeling. Whether its wine labels, jam labels, labels for bags of cookies or boxes, I have set up the ability to do customization and personalization fast. In our shop, we have three Lexmark printers that I bought off Ebay three years ago for 1 cent each (and $5 shipping). They're lined up each with their own label stock size and when its time to print a quick bag label, photo paper or wine label -we're ready to go. We have extra color cartridges in stock to alleviate any type of stall in production and each printer is on our network and labeled with the type of label stock the printer is holding. It is that level of detail that helps us create personalization within minutes. No delays of shipping the gift basket - its printed, applied, put into the basket and ready to go.

From a product standpoint, we are able to offer picture frames to add personal photos. This is especially popular during Mother's Day and Father's Day. Putting a picture of the kids in a frame and including it in the basket is extra special. I've even had the opportunity to have a child draw a picture and Dad emailed to me - that was put in a frame and including in a gorgeous spa gift basket for Mother's Day. We also have bags of hard candies, cookies, trail mixes that we can put a custom label on. "Julie's Personal Training Mix" or "Sweet Tarts for a Sweet Kate" are examples of the types of labels we'll create for our customers. Does this require some creativity? Absolutely! But you're a gift basket designer, you're already creative, right?

There are a variety of programs you can use to create labels. Microsoft Word has templates and you can choose your label size. I typically will use PowerPoint or Adobe Photoshop if its something complicated or in need of special fonts and color schemes. Whatever program you're comfortable with is what I recommend. You need to be fast with this type of work so you're not in a spot to hold up the shipping or delivery of your gift basket. From an artwork standpoint, I use rel=nofollow http://www.istockphoto.com to grab the little pictures I need to make the labels extra special. You do, however, have to pay for the photos so you might want to consider a free source such as Microsoft Office Online.

Lastly, I use rel=nofollow http://www.onlinelabels.com for label stock. They have every size you can possible imagine and they come in white matte, gloss and colors are available. They are flexible with the number of sheets you have to buy and above all, the pricing is great. We selected 5 different sizes and have them in stock at all times.

One last consideration - be careful on volume. If you get an order that requires 25 or more of a given label, it might be worth checking with your local printer. I use Hillview Printing for bulk orders and they show up right on time and are perfectly priced. Sometimes the cost of the ink for your Inkjet will be more than using a professional print house.

Above all, have fun with labeling. It absolutely adds value to your gift baskets and will separate you from your competition.

Farmers Markets: It's Not All Fruits and Veggies

There is a revolution occurring at farmers markets today. They no longer sell just fruits and vegetables, but honey, butter for the local dairy farmer, Artisan breads, carrot cake, cupcakes, cookies, pies, jams, jellies and pickled okra and bamboo shoots. The unique variety of products available is endless.

If you are interested in selling homemade baked goods or family recipes at your local Farmers Market, stay abreast of food trends by using Goggle Alerts to locate what's hot and what's not. What was a huge seller last year may not be this year and although people loved those butter-cream topped cupcakes last year they may be seeking smaller versions this year; cutting back to help both their health and wallet.

If you are a home-based baker, baking Artisan breads; you might want to consider offering value-added items, such as homemade jams, jellies and fruit butters. Remember though, some value added products can be costly, so select accordingly and consider selling your products both individually and as a pair. There are also numerous legal restrictions that need to be followed before selling your value-added product; you may have to use a incubator or licensed commercial kitchen facility so check with your state/local regulator agency.

Every food processor should also note that a Farmers Market is not always the best location to sell every type of food product. People who visit and make purchases at local farmers market are looking for bargains. They are not interested in paying an exorbitant amount for a gourmet pound cake, custom cookies or homemade chocolate truffles. For example, pumpkin pies may be your favorite baked good; unfortunately, no one may want them on a sunny spring day in April. The venue (a farmers market) may be the perfect location, but the product does not represent what consumers want. You might fair better selling your oatmeal raisin bars, or gluten-free coconut butterscotch cookies, priced at 2-3 for $3.95-4.95. These are products farmers market attendees can eat while strolling through the market or stick in their purse for an afternoon snack.

The bottom line, before deciding to sell your home-based bakery products at any Farmers Market do your homework and check out what others are selling. You do not have to sell the same thing, but think about what folks might want to purchase. Do your food products compliment other goods being sold at the market? If you are out selling on a Saturday, would a miniature pecan coffee cake be something consumers might pick up for Sunday morning coffee before church; or something they would take to an ailing friend? Farmers Markets are great places to sell your goods if you selling what consumers want.

How to Start A Baking Business At Home - Getting Your Niche

Studying for my college diploma was a challenging part of my life. I was often financially strapped and unable to participate in many college activities. For this reason I decided to learn how to start a baking business at home. My first course of action was deciding what kind of baked goods I would supply. I settled for Girl Scout cookies since that is what I was best at baking.

Getting my business registered was the next step. I settled for Melville Home Made Cookies for my business name. I was then given a permit and a set of regulations that I needed to comply with. I also set up a bank account for my bakery. Marketing my products was easy since I live in a gated community. The local neighborhood was very receptive when I delivered some samples for them to taste. I also visited some offices and even took time to visit the local church with my home-made cookies.

The reason why my business has been such a phenomenal success is the fact that people love home made products. I also have my own special recipes that keep my customers coming back for more. The local schools in my locality have an arrangement with me to provide their canteens with cookies. I also keep track of my business expenses to make sure my business is in a healthy financial position. Uncle Sam also gets his share. I make it a point to remind my customer that my cookies are all made with a very special ingredient and that is love for my community.

You Can Start a Home Business

So you want to start working from home. This is an interesting idea full of possibilities. Before you start a home business it's important to remember that you must have good time management skills. If you feel you have these then there are many options available.

There are too many to go into great detail in this article however a few good ideas are:

Art and crafts: yes many people bring this up but if you truly have a unique idea and talent you can market your product to be a novelty and people will purchase it. For instance it's fairly easy to make candles and you can sell them for half of what most stores charge and still make a profit.
Freelancing: this can mean so many different things. You can freelance by writing, photography, blogging, or designing websites. The lists are endless, and if you get good enough in one field, why not try opening your own online business offering your services?
Cooking or Baking: this can fall under catering if you feel like you can handle a larger scale of things. But it can also be simply baking specialty cakes or cookies. Whatever you feel like you can handle and people would want. Let you imagination take control, people are always looking new and different.
Sewing: this doesn't include any one idea of sewing. You can use this skill you make clothes, blankets, quilts and other items. Or you can use this to do alterations on clothes. Trust me there are a lot of people that pants that are too long or dresses that needs to be shortened.
Computer Support online: if you happen to have knowledge computers and or other technical items you can always apply for online support jobs. Helping people remove a virus from their computer or figure out software problems may be the perfect job for you.

Think of something you are good at and try and find a way to make it work for you. People do it everyday, why shouldn't you do it as well?

Thinking About Starting A Home Internet Marketing Business: Beware Of The Deceptive Baloney

There are many people around the world that have been left strapped after the crash of the economy left us all out-of-pocket. As such, a lot more people are looking further into the idea of a home internet marketing business.

The sort that most will turn their nose up at, as the first thing that often comes to mind at the mention of working online is that it's SHADY!

This is true to a certain extent. There are a lot of programs that promise the earth and can't deliver on their products. Simply because some lazy folks are around that have their very own home internet marketing business where they sit at home and take your money and don't follow-up on customer service. This is a business model where people will get rich off you rather than helping you get started.

So how do you avoid these nasty programs?

The first thing I would suggest you do is to take a look at the business and find out who is running it, (about page) and what payment systems they have in place. Don't be fooled by thinking a PayPal payment processing method means it is secure. This is just a middleman sort of thing. All they can do is investigate a complaint.

You will often see a money back guarantee if the program isn't for you. Find out who is offering the guarantee. If the merchant offers it then you have to trust they will honor that. If it is backed by an independent mediator you have a trustworthy merchant, as in many cases, the seller won't have the option to be offering it, but rather the company that handles the transaction has this as a measure of registration for members. ClickBank is one. There are others such as PayDotCom and commission junction. This is often found within the compensation disclosures of websites or within their privacy policies as these companies will use tracking cookies. So, really it should be disclosed on the website.

A home internet marketing business is possible to start when you go about it the right way. As hard as it can be to stay level minded when you want to believe something's possible, try not to make a transaction on the same day you find out about a program. Take a look at the offer of training and write down the details somewhere. Even bookmark it online with your browser. Go back, when you have let the hype wear off and run some online searches to find out more information and if the company is who they say they are.

Having The Right Software For Your New Home Business - Why Being Secure Is So Important

It does seem every other day now, either in the media or on the news that someone purchases a second-hand computer and is amazed to discover government files, an individual's intimate diary or a corporation's pre-budget announcement. If you are using a computer on a day by day basis at home for your business you must ensure that it is secure to hide your data from prying eyes - and also to delete any sensitive data when you decide to upgrade to a new computer and you sell your old one on.

Security software does two things to be effective; deletes files securely - this is the equivalent of an electronic shredder. It will get rid of any files permanently. The second main benefit of security software is encryption. Encryption will scramble your data to make it completely incoherent; you can only decrypt the file if you have the correct password. There are many very good security software tools which can handle the task of secure deletion and file encryption; there are though effective tools which can be found for free online.

There are other options which are part of the setup of security software, the two above are the most important but you should bypass the other features available. When you go online across cyberspace and visit different sites, you can pick up tracking cookies. Now tracking cookies are designed to plant themselves onto your computer and this keeps a record. This record will have details of your computer's IP address and other data. These can often be harmless, but the more you collect, the slower your computer can become and be more exposed to sites out there on the net. Another important of security software for the internet in general is the 'firewall'. This acts as a virtual wall against any threats trying to interact with you computer. You can change the setting to allow certain sites and programs through the firewall, such as email and applications where you download files such as iTunes.

With the amount of unscrupulous people out there who lookout for unprotected computers and data, you need to make sure that you computer is as secure as it can be. Remember you are working from home and your computer is the hub that keeps it all alive, if it wasn't for your computer then I think most home businesses would struggle to do much at all. By being vigilant and keeping up to date with your security software you will be assured you are doing everything to protect your business at home.

Having an Internet Affair? Learn What Information Your Browser Is Storing

Are you using the internet to have an online affair? Are you visiting married dating sites or communicating with a mistress or lover online? If so it's important that you learn what information your web browsing software is recording, where it is stored and how to go about deleting it. The three major categories of information collected by your browser are history files, cookies, and cache files.

History - The sites you've visited, the day and time you visited them and the individual pages from the site's you've viewed make up what's known as your web history. By default your web browser stores this information as you surf the net. This is a handy feature if you need to return to a site you recently visited but it's a troublesome feature if you are trying to hide an online affair. You can view your history file in most web browsers by pressing CNTRL + H at the same time. If you've been visiting married dating sites or perhaps logging into an email account that your spouse doesn't know about it's important to delete these records from your computer.

Cookies - Some websites store what are known as cookies on your computer. Cookies store little bits of information for the purpose of making your internet surfing more enjoyable. A site may install a cookie to keep track of the last time you visited, to store a preference you've selected, or to remember your user name or password for the site. Cookies may also tell a website if you've visited before and what ads you've been shown. There are many good reasons for a website to store cookie files on your PC, but if you're having an affair that involves the internet you should be aware of the cookies you've store. Your web browser has an option for deleting your cookies. You can most likely find this option by clicking on 'tools' and then 'internet options'. If you're visiting web sites that you don't want your spouse to know about it, it's important that you delete your cookies.

Cache - If you're using your computer to have an internet affair your cache files should be a major concern to you. Cache files are used to speed up your web browsing experience. When you visit a website, look at a picture, or view a video your browser may store a cach file for that site. The next time you visit the page it's loads faster because it calls the information directly from the cache file served on your PC as opposed to calling the site from the server. This is a great way of speeding up web browsing, but it can supply a suspicious spouse with damning evidence of an affair. If you're visiting married dating websites or even viewing pictures or videos of your mistress this information may all be on your PC in your browsers cache. Needless to say if you're having an online affair it's important to delete your cache files. In most major web browser you can delete the cache file by clicking on 'tools' and the 'internet options'. You will want to delete the cache anytime you visit a site that you are hiding from your spouse.

As you can see there are many good reasons for your web browser to store information about your online activities. History files, cookies, and cache files all make surfing the internet a seamless experience. The problem comes when you are trying to hide your internet activities from someone such as your husband or wife. It's important that you take the time to learn what information is collected by your browser, where it is stored, and how to delete it.
