We All Need Some Self Promotion
It seems that the while so much around us has changed in recent years that at the heart of it, who we are remains the same. What I mean is that while we have all these news ways to communicate like Twitter & Facebook and new ways to find what we want (search engines, blogs etc.), who we are and what we want hasn't changed. Human beings have a desire to connect with each other. We want others to hear us, love us and buy what we're selling. To this end, we have always found ways to promote ourselves and/or our business. In ancient times business was promoted mainly through word of mouth. The next major revolution in communication was what we call old world media - newspapers, circulars, billboards etc. After that there was the emergence of mass media tools like tv and radio. Each stage in the emergence of communication has led to larger and larger audiences. The internet is now the ultimate expression of reaching the masses. A website can be visited anytime from anywhere on the planet. Now that the world is watching we revert back to the same messages we sent out from the beginning of history; look at me! This is not a bad thing even if some self-promotion is of dubious origin. We want to connect to other people with similar interests or are selling things that we may find cool or useful. Sites like Hotornot.com and others like it are a type of open forum where people can put themselves or company out there into the cyber world of ratings and comments. Rating sites can be fun for the same reason people like to go to the mall or park and 'people watch'. It's just interesting to see all of our different interpretations of what people think is cool, stylish or acceptable behavior. However, even though it's fun to see who and what's in the world, don't get anxious over a poor rating, it's just a stranger's superficial view of you. Conversely, for the same reason we shouldn't go crazy over a positive rating. My advice is to take this stuff with a grain a salt and have fun.Sal Pellettieri is the founder of the rating and promotions website [http://SoYouThinkYoureCool.com]SoYouThinkYoureCool.com. This is the place to showcase yourself, your business, band, website or whatever and have the world tell you exactly how cool you are. He also blogs at soyouthinkyourecool.wordpress.com.
