Desktop Or Laptop - Which Is Better For Your New Home Office?

This is a big consideration to bear in mind when planning your new home office for the first time. Laptops traditionally used to be more desirable machines that commanded a much higher premium than their desktop counterpart. Now though laptop computers have plummeted in price, but you will still pay a premium for their portability. This is because laptop components are specially designed for durability which comes at a cost. You will often pay up to forty percent more for a laptop compared to a desktop.

There are some key considerations to take into account when weighing the two options up. Firstly its memory; laptop memory does tend to be more expensive than its desktop cousin and also has fewer memory slots, so upgrading a desktop computer in the future will be much more cost effective. If you go for the laptop option ensure that you purchase it with as much memory as possible; a memory upgrade that costs you one hundred dollars when ordering it from the factory is several times over a cheaper option than if you did it a year down the line. Secondly you have to be aware of the computer speed. The faster a PC is, the more power it will consume. So if you have a top of the range laptop it will have a significant drain on its battery. Ideally with a laptop you need to find a compromise between battery life and power. The great thing with a desktop PC is that this worry doesn't exist.

One of the great benefits of the laptop is of course that it is portable, I know this sounds obvious but it is a known fact that the majority of laptops sold do not leave their owners desks. So you may think why have a laptop then, especially if it is limited in terms of battery power, screen size and the ability to upgrade. Well these are good questions and there is no definitive answer, but they are great space-savers and you can take them with you to work at a colleagues or on the train. So there are plenty of advantages to.

As we are talking about working from home, then you need to put it all into perspective. For instance what are the main tasks for the computer? Is it just for reading and sending emails to customers? If so a laptop may be for you. But if you have more advanced needs such as creating video and photo editing then a desktop PC may be just right.

How To Choose The Right Computer For Your New Home Office

The most important part of setting up your home office from scratch is likely to be your computer. It is where you will do the majority of your work, it is where you will keep track of your income and expenditure and will most likely be the main way to keep in touch with clients and colleagues.

There are a huge range of machines available to choose from, ranging from the cheap and cheerful to the more state-of-the-art and rather expensive computer systems. If you are lucky enough and you are working from home through an employer then they may already supply you with one, but if you are working from home as you are self-employed then unfortunately it will be down to you to foot the bill. If you are choosing your own equipment do not let that put you off as you can get the machine that suits your business and your wallet very easily.

In this modern age there is no such thing as a one size fits all computer; companies produce different computers for different markets. If you want to use a PC for video editing and use it for the latest games in your free time then it is best to avoid the bargain basement models as these versions will struggle.

Laptops are now also a lot more affordable and popular than they were about five years ago. But the traditional desktop PC's are great value for the money. Let's face it the whole idea of a home office is that it is an office, so it begs the question; does a laptop suit your needs in an office environment? Personally I think that with a desktop PC it will be better for your vision as most desktop PC screens are nineteen inches in diameter, when you compare this to a laptop there is no contest.

You need to think about the space set aside for your home office, if it is a literally just a broom cupboard then a laptop would be more sensible. If you have a large area available though where you can comfortably fit a large desk, chair and filing cabinet then a desktop PC on your new desk is a good move.

Just think about how often you are likely to use your computer, will you use it daily? Nine to Five? If so make sure that you have a good warranty with it, remember this is the hub of your business and that means you will have to spend a bit of money.

Make the Right Computer Choice for Your Home Based Business

Working from home is great and something everybody should at least try, to see if it is something they want to pursue. But when you are past that deciding step and want to get moving, it is important to think your new venture through. For example, many if not all home based businesses are based around computer related work. So make sure to make sure that you think your choice of computer through.

The biggest decision is between a stationary desktop computer or a portable laptop. Many people go for the laptop without thinking. It has the benefits of portability, ease of use and price. You can literally work from bed (which might not always be a good idea to be honest), the couch or bring it with you to a cafe. This is true, but consider how it may affect the way you see your work. Many appreciate having the choice to take their job with them wherever they go, but for some - an enclosed space where you can really focus helps the productivity. If you are a type of person that needs an environment, even in your home, that feels like a work zone then consider this: getting a laptop might prohibit you from being as productive as you want to. So consider a desktop instead.

Desktop computers can have other benefits for home based business owners. They do not necessarily need to be more expensive - in fact, they can be cheaper since their internal components can be bigger, which is cheaper to manufacture. So getting a desktop computer might actually make it cheaper for you. Also consider the alternative that you might be in a field of work, like graphic design or video editing, that needs heavier processing power and a laptop just wont do. Then, investing in a good desktop computer might be the optimal solution.

So make your choice based on what you computing needs are when working from home. Computers come in all shapes and sizes, so it is your responsibility to make a good choice.

Eliminating Clutter As a Marketing Strategy? You Bet!

If you read the title and think I'm crazy, I hope to convince you otherwise. Eliminating clutter and organizing your workspace can be a marketing strategy.

Look at your desktop. What do you see? Stacks of file folders? Books opened to random pages? Scraps of paper on which you've written names of potential clients? Ah-ha! I thought so. I'll be the first to admit that my desktop isn't always free of clutter, but I do agree that it's important to maintain a list of current clients as well as potential client contacts in an easily accessible location.

Start with a clean slate. Remove everything from your desktop. Toss what you don't need, put everything else into a labeled folder or back on the bookshelf. Don't you feel better already?

Next, create a folder (paper or electronic, your preference) into which you list current clients' names and contact information. An Excel spreadsheet works well for this. Add a notation about when you last spoke with them. Has it been more than a month? If so, plan to send them an email within the next 7 days to touch base and ask if they have any need for your services. Do this on a rotating basis so you are always reaching out to former clients.

Create a second folder with names and contact information for potential clients. Now, compose and send each new contact an email introducing yourself, highlighting your skills and areas of expertise, and inquiring about the potential for freelance work. Document on your spreadsheet the date you sent out each query. If you receive a response asking for additional information, reply back as quickly as possible. Don't let days or weeks go by without sending a reply. Make sure to document the dates when you send subsequent emails. Each time you learn of a new potential client, add the name to your database and throw away the scraps of paper.
