Tumbling From the Corporate Ladder to a Home Based Business

I loved my job - loved the security of a salary, the authority that came with doing marketing for a big famous global firm and suddenly that was all gone... I packed my bag and went into hiding for a few weeks trying to decide on my next step. I came out of hiding with a business plan.

I started my own online gift shop as part of a lifelong dream of having my own gift/coffee shop on a small holding with lots of animals around for kids to play with and possibly a spa for mothers to be pampered while the kids are entertained elsewhere. In between all that they can eat and shop. As long as I can remember I wanted to do this and suddenly with no job I was in a position to take the first shaky step towards making my dream come true.

My website went live in October after long days and nights in front of the computer to make it happen. I was lucky to have a husband willing and able to help create a full e-commerce site. It went live and it was super exciting... and then- nothing! The waiting is killing me. And that is when is dawned on me - the hard part was not building the site, the hard part is getting people to know about it.

So out came the sewing machine and creative ideas and I started spending more endless nights making various crafty gifts and products - good enough for my site but also good enough to go to markets. Weekends no longer exist as I spend endless hours displaying my products on a table, with so many others, and handing out business cards to help get the word out.

It is so hard - most articles say takes up to 2 years to get a business off the ground. Being impatient I thought I will be better than that - but so far it is hard work needing more patience than I've ever had to show before.

It is not all bad - I get to do my own thing, be creative all day, choose what goes onto the site and what not, create events around it and so much more. I love every moment of it... but I am broke. The money will not be rolling in for a while yet. Until then I have to enjoy the other little things in life that makes me happy and I have to rely on my husband to put the bread on the table.

I learned the following in the first few months of getting started: - never underestimate your support structure - my parents, husbands, family and in-laws have been so supportive. They just keep giving their time, prayers, ideas and yes - here and there money - friends are needed for regular coffees and hugs to help keep you motivated. Thank goodness I have a handful of those - you need patience and lots of it - think outside the square - find various ways to tell people about your venture - do not give up - so what if it takes two years to become successful? Two years is nothing compared to all the many successful years that lies ahead.

My marketing ideas for the website is still fresh and new but I will report back after Christmas to rate their successes so that future new business owners can possibly learn from that.

A Legitimate Home Business - Is it Impossible to Find? One Woman's Story

This isn't my first foray into the world of self employment. I have successfully operated my own businesses before. Each, however, involved leaving the comfort of my home (and may I add, in all sorts of New England weather), driving, lugging, catering to other peoples' whims and schedules and paying outrageous overhead (rent, gas, electric, phone, fees, taxes, licenses - the list is endless), all for the privilege of being my own boss. Don't get me wrong, I loved what I was doing and it definitely had it's advantages, not least of which being the invaluable experience I gained. I learned a whole lot about conducting business, about people, about how to cultivate a stellar reputation, and about how important it is to live up to that reputation every single day.

After selling our last retail business I accepted a professional position putting all the things I'd learned to work for a local orthodontic practice. For many years my business savvy and people skills served me well in that position until circumstances dictated that I relocate to the southeastern United States. The employment opportunities here, not to mention the pay scale, are not what they were in the northeast. Being a person who prefers to see the glass as half full, however, and being in possession of a "never-say-die" entrepreneurial spirit, I saw this as being the perfect opportunity to start a brand new venture - an Internet business! As I saw it, this was the perfect solution. I would be able to earn my living from home utilizing the world wide web, employ the skills I'd developed in my previous ventures, and be my own boss again. Perfect!

Now came the fun part! I began scouring the Internet (sound familiar?) looking for the right opportunity, a legitimate opportunity, to make an honest living from home. If you've conducted the same search you know what I found, opportunity after so-called opportunity where I could become rich beyond my wildest dreams, practically overnight, doing absolutely nothing! All that was required was that I quickly buy into the load of garbage that was being offered to me. Really? No, I mean, really? You see, since I wasn't born yesterday, I know that in order to successfully run a legitimate business you actually have to know something that's worth knowing, do something that's worth doing, or sell something that's worth buying.

The hard truth is this: "NO ONE IS GOING TO PAY YOU FOR DOING NOTHING!" Considering that this whole Internet thing was a new field for me, and being a reasonable and halfway intelligent individual, I rightfully expected that in order to put my oars into these unexplored waters I'd have to apply myself to learn some new things. Anyone who might try to tell me otherwise is immediately suspect in my mind, and they should be in yours, too. Don't be naive. Take the time to educate yourself. Do not fall into that lottery-mentality trap! The old adage is true: "If it seems to good to be true, it probably is." On the other hand, there are fine opportunities to be found if you keep your expectations realistic and remember that, depending on your background, you may have to learn how to walk before you can run.

Here are a few pieces of advice I can offer you, based on my own experience.

1: Look at everything that catches your interest. Yes, this can be time consuming but sometimes a real gem can be found in with the trash. Besides, you'd be amazed at how much you can learn in this process.

2: When you've found something that looks like a real opportunity, poke around, dig deeper. Research any names connected with the business. Who are they? What is their overall reputation in the industry? Needless to say, a lot of negative comments or reviews should be sending up a flurry of red flags, but on the other hand....

3: Remember to be reasonable. There is no one who can make everybody happy all the time. Even the best and most reputable people may be criticized from time to time (Sometimes because they ARE the best!)

4: Don't be afraid to make your decision. A true entrepreneur is decisive. Having done your due diligence, you should be reasonably comfortable in moving forward. A few butterflies are acceptable but don't let fear paralyze you.

In my own case after reading through tons of trash, and wandering down countless dead ends, I found what I was looking for. I found a legitimate opportunity to build a home business for myself. I found the support of a community of reputable professionals who genuinely care about my success. The opportunity to make a handsome living is certainly there, but guess what? To accomplish that requires effort, and learning some new skills. It requires some investment, but then again, any business I've ever started did. I've accepted the challenge. I'm limited only by myself.

Working your own home-based business is a challenge. It is not for the lazy, it is not for the undisciplined, it is not for the person who expects to get something for nothing. For the true entrepreneur, however, working from home is a dream come true. It's worth the search, it's worth the work, it's worth the investment of time, effort and resources. Why Working From Home As a Parent is a Dream Come True

That aside, as a parent of a young child it was a dream come true. Suddenly I worked my own hours, decided my own working days and arranged everything around how I wanted my life to run.

The dream come true!
This is an excellent set-up. No longer do I need to worry about who is picking my daughter up from school and looking after her until one of us has got home from work. If my daughter has a school event I can plan my day around this.

I can work evenings or weekends to fit in around family commitments. If we want to go away for a few days then that is possible, even taking a laptop with me to keep up with work in the evenings and free time. I can even continue my work during a long journey or whilst sitting watching the TV with my family.

The other side of the coin
But it is not all good news. My home working is our family's main income, so there is quite frequently the worry as to where the next customer will come from and will there be money coming in next month. There is also the lack of certainty. Will there be enough new customers next month? Will existing customers renew and pay up on the invoices that I have written?

Every time a customer defaults and I am unable to get them to pay up it is me that personally loses out. Every customer that is late paying up affects my bank balance, adding to the building worry of customers defaulting and me not getting my monthly wages.

Yes, home working as a parent is a dream, but there are a lot of worries about marketing the business, getting the new work in and getting paid up for all of the effort once it is completed. There can be a lot of worries.

On balance...
But home working, when ran successfully, is a dream. Don't put your eggs all in the same basket so if one part of the business struggles there is a regular income from another part. Then continue your work at times that suit you and your family best. Whether that is a few hours in the day and more in the evening is up to you. As long as you can motivate yourself to work hard you choose your own hours around your family's plans, even working literally around the plans when you are away with them.

Working from home as a parent is a dream come true as you can spend your hours better with your family, but at a cost!

What is wealth? Wealth has different meanings for different people. The older money Europeans view wealth very differently than the nouveaux slightly rich Americans.

There was a study that surveyed 2,000 people from 20 countries whose assets were valued at $1.5 million or more. The common theme found was that the vast majority of the wealthy people agreed that being rich enables them to buy the best products and that wealth gives them the freedom of choice in their life. The result was the same from all countries. Most of the people also agreed that wealth is a reward for hard work!

Here are the differences that were found:

Almost 50% of all wealthy Asians and Latin Americans said that wealth allowed them to get respect from friends and family. This is compared to only 28% of Europeans and 38% of Americans who felt that respect was only a byproduct of wealth.

About 75% of Americans and Latin Americans said that wealth enabled them to give to charity. This compares to only 57% in Europe and 66% in Asia.

Approximately 66.6% of all Europeans and Americans said that wealth made them happy. However, 76% of Asians and Latin Americans said they were happier.

Less than 50% of Americans and Europeans said that wealth helped them become a role model for others to see how that success is achievable. This compares with 71% of Latin Americans and 61% of Asians.

Wealthy Europeans are more likely to spend their wealth on travel and interior decorating. Latin Americans like to spend their money on education. Americans like to be philanthropic, but this is probably due to a tax favorable system that the United States has and other countries do not have, so for Americans it pays to give.

It's interesting to see how different cultures view wealth. What is your definition of wealth? My definition would be to be able to live a stress free life and know that if I wanted to, I could retire without any worries. The rest would be gravy for me.

A home based business enables you to create your own wealth. You are your own boss! You get to hire the people that you want to work with. Think about this, at most companies you start at the bottom and try to work your way up to the top executive position. In a home based business you start at the top. You are the CEO of your company and you build your company. You work as a team and together with your team you start to build your wealth.
