I think about the days when I used to drag my bones to work to chain myself to a desk and it makes me gag a little bit. There are so many things that are unsavory about the concept of killing yourself to make some group of guys or girls filthy stinking rich. You work with co-workers, clients, and bosses who all simultaneously expect you to deliver the world and put a nice shiny bow on it. I've worked with many stellar people in the past and many several friends in my inter-office dealings, but as a whole, the "rat race" isn't one I want to run. These are some of the reasons I left that life behind and decided to work for myself.

1) I like to wear pajamas to work.

Dress code protocol is not awesome. Pressing my Dockers and perpetually changing my lineup of polo shirts isn't something I want to spend a lot of time doing. The amount of money I save on clothes, gas, razors, and lunches by working from my home office is CRAZY!

2) I like to write stuff off on my taxes.

You'll likely want to consult your tax professional about the logistics here, but you can write off a boatload of personal expenses for your business if you structure things correctly. Many things you would not otherwise have deducted from your taxes will now be written off.

3) I have had good bosses, but they're still bosses.

I've worked for Fortune 500 companies, I've worked for companies with fewer than ten employees, and I've worked for mid-sized companies that have 500 employees. At every level, I've worked for very decent people, but there is a common thread: your day to day job scope points back to making a bunch of money for someone else. Working in a home office offers a lot of advantages: no commute, relaxed atmosphere, no dress code, and a flexible schedule, are among the best that come to mind immediately. One disadvantage is that with the office so close, and our tendency to be overachievers, it is very easy to find oneself glued to the desk from early morning to late at night. Sometimes this is a necessity, as there are deadlines and specific job requirements that must be met in a limited amount of time, but most of the time being chained to the desk is self imposed.

The fact is that the human body was not designed to be in a sitting position all day every day. It was designed for movement, exercise and physical labor. When we stay immobile for long periods of time our muscles atrophy, we lose endurance and our heart muscle works only as hard as it has to. During prolonged inactivity we not only lose obvious strength and body tone, but our heart and lungs also lose vigor and vitality. Jump right in! Select a cause you support within your own community, perhaps your child's sports team, or a non-profit daycare center. Identify a small need (under $10,000), such as uniforms or playground equipment. Then volunteer to find money for them and write a grant proposal. With a couple of successful grants under your belt, you can begin to market your services to paying clients.

Is it Easy to Work at Home As a Medical Transcriptionist?

Medical transcription is a popular job for people wanting to work at home. The work is in demand and employers are willing to hire people to work from home rather than in their office. It's a pretty nice deal.

That doesn't mean it's necessarily easy.

Working at home in general is challenging. You have a lot of distractions. How many depends on if you have children or other people who will be there while you're trying to work, as well as how easily the television or surfing the internet can attract you.

There's also the temptation to get the various household chores done. It's really amazing how easy it is to procrastinate on doing things that earn money when you work at home.

And make no mistake, procrastinating can have a big impact on your income. Your typical work at home medical transcriptionist is paid on production, not hourly. Your employer doesn't need to track the hours you work too hard when they only pay you if you produce.

But before you can start working, you have to start training. I strongly recommend taking an online medical transcription course. This will help you get used to some of the aspects of working at home. Not having a teacher in the same room while you're learning isn't so different from not having a boss looking over your shoulder. There's a lack of immediate pressure to stay on task that many people struggle with.

Be careful in choosing a course. You want one that will allow you to land a job after graduation. Not all courses will do that. Some give such low quality training that no employers will want to have anything to do with their graduates. Others do such a good job that employers will waive the two years experience requirement and test the graduates to confirm that they're ready to work.

With quality training, medical transcription is one of the easiest areas to find at home work. There's never a guarantee that you'll get the job you want, but you can certainly improve your odds.

Is Working From Home Right For You?

Over the last several years the world of telecommuting has exploded. Self Discipline - It takes an awful lot of self discipline to work from home. If you do not have to be at your desk by 8 a.m. anymore it is easy to become lazy and distracted

Loneliness - No more 10 am coffee klatches and no more coworker camaraderie.
No Escape - You cannot escape all the pressures of the office by going home and forgetting about them, you are already there.

Working from home is certainly not for everyone but for some it is the perfect setup. You can do so quite successfully as long as you treat your time as time at the office. Do not work in your PJs, get properly dressed, you will feel more businesslike. The same holds true for the hours you work. Set them just like you used to when you worked in the "real world" and you will avoid not only lack of productivity but burn out as well.

Keep Your at Home Based Business Running Like a Fine Tuned Machine!

Chances are if you're just starting your new at home based business you've found that there are some things about it you absolutely love. Like there's no boss breathing down your neck, your commute is seconds instead of many long minutes (maybe hours), the dress code is whatever you want it to be for the day -- some prefer pj's, I'm into sweats -- and you're pretty much calling the shots on your schedule. Sweet!

After a couple of weeks though, you might think you've suddenly developed a case of Adult onset Attention Deficit Disorder -- or AADD for short. It happens -- suddenly you're the boss and you decide you need to get a load of laundry done, or pay some personal bills, or mow the lawn, or run to the grocery store, or do your email, or work on your business plan, or get the marketing strategy put together, or update your website, or take the kids to soccer. Whew!

Here are a couple of my very most critical hints to keep our work from home life running smoothly:

First and foremost - get some structure into your day. You need to figure out what is going to work best for you. If you've decided to work from home so that you can have the flexibility to "multi-task" with home tasks and work tasks, that's just fine! Just figure out what needs to get done during the week, prioritize it, then plan your week accordingly.

Maybe you can plan your mornings to be all work and no play or outside chores. You get yourself to your home office -- wherever that is, and you work. Do NOT start your day answering emails. The only reason to check email is to see if any new orders have come in overnight that need to be dealt with. You should be able to tell which are orders and which are other things -- all other things wait!

If morning is the time of day that's best to connect with your clients, do it then. Get the important things out of the way first. An use some kind of contact management software or other calendaring software to so you can keep track of what you've done throughout the day and can get a feeling of accomplishment when you check off the items on your to-do-list at the end of the day. (You do have a to-do-list don't you? If not, that's the first tip for getting your at home based business running like a finely tuned machine.)

The next thing I recommend is to grow your network and keep growing it. This might be a little more difficult if you've starting work from home and you've started to get in the grove of staying at home. It can be tough to get out and meet people, to schmooze, to build those relationships, but that is so critical to the success of your business. Whether you're an in a home based internet business, or you've got an online home based business opportunity, or if you're in a preschool business from your home, you've got to develop relationships with people who you can help and who can help you.

Finally - celebrate small successes! You've got to take some time to a.) recognize your successes and they could be very small and b.)celebrate them. Perhaps you'll have been stumped over some problem and spent an inordinate amount of time to find the right fix. When you do, recognize your accomplishment and celebrate it! Your celebrations don't have to be big, but they do have to be recognizable as celebrations. Treat yourself to some small token of appreciation if the job was small and some larger token, if the job was larger. Include your family in the celebrations.
