Life is an adventure. Cherish everything that happens. There is something good in each situation. Sometimes it is harder to find the good.

People are losing their jobs all over America right now. At first glance, that pink slip and the words in the downsizing note "your job has been eliminated," sound like the financial death bell. Maybe it is a blessing in disguise. Doesn't feel like it right now? I understand that sentiment.

Take the time to really look at what you want out of life.

Ask yourself if you could do anything you wanted, what would you do? Losing a job is an opportunity for a new beginning. Maybe even change directions.

Did you really enjoy your previous job?

What parts did you like the best?

What would you change?

Take some time to reflect on these factors and create the ideal position for yourself.

Do you really enjoy working for someone else? Is your dream to own your own business? Not everyone is destined to be an employee just as not everyone really has what it takes to be a business owner. Only about three percent of the population really has the initiative, motivation and determination to be successful business owners. Look at that fact for a few seconds. It has nothing to do with age, gender, experience or even your bank balance. It all relates to desire, motivation and determination. I know so many, males and females, who started their own business later in life with very limited financial resources. If you have funds available, even better.

It all hinges on your desire, determination and your "why." Why do you want to be your own boss? Personally, I am psychologically unemployable; I am an entrepreneur.

I love my life. I love the challenge. I thrive on the entrepreneurial environment.

Look seriously into your own deep desires. What is it that you really want? This is your opportunity IF you are ready for it.

It is about which choice is right for you. Just be certain you are choosing out of desire rather than fear. If you choose a job because of fear of stepping out on your own or fear of losing the security of a paycheck, reconsider. It takes more nerve and determination to start your own business even if it is a great home based business.

Don't even consider starting your own business unless you are going to be consistent and persistent. Do you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur? Consider this fact: You are either an entrepreneur making yourself wealthy or you are working for one making them wealthy. Which is greater, your desire or your fear?

Look at the positives and negatives of each choice.

Job

Positives - A regular paycheck as long as the job lasts
No decisions or few decisions - the boss sets your schedule and duties

Negatives - Someone else controls your income potential
Your future is not in your control

Entrepreneur

Positives - Unlimited income potential
Freedom to control your future
Freedom to set your own schedule and duties

Negatives - You are responsible for your decisions (This is both positive and negative)

What's the Optimal Length of a Webinar?

Research shows that people have a shorter attention span when they are online than they do in a face-to-face session (Lunt Crosman, 2004). We also know that the majority of participants in webinars will multi-task during the session. At the same time as the webinar is in progress, participants are likely to check their e-mail, engage with social media, eat lunch or so any number of other activities that require them to divide their time and focus.

When it comes to offering training or sharing knowledge through a webinar, your participants are not interested in spending time going over and over the same material to memorize it or going deep into theory. They want solid, relevant content and they want it in a way that keeps them engaged and interested.

Experts in the e-learning field have found that shorter sessions result in higher rates of retention (Lunt Crosman, 2004). Having said that, you don't want to cram in so much material that you have to talk a mile a minute. You want to divide your time for each segment of your session. The main segments will include an introduction, a maximum of three main content points, and a conclusion. You also need to allow time for interaction such as polls and other activities, as well as a question and answer period.

The general rule is to break your content down into manageable chunks. Offer each "chunk" as an individual session. Give relevant examples, stories, statistics and actionable "how to"s for each topic you present. It is better to offer more sessions on more topics, with each session being rich in content and takeaways for your participants.

Ideally, your webinars should be no less than thirty minutes in length and no longer than ninety minutes. If you go shorter than half an hour, you may not be able to cover your main points in any depth at all. If you go longer than ninety minutes, you run the risk of losing your participants' attention completely, as they pass the point of diminishing return for learning. That's the point at which they start to be able to absorb less and less. The longer you go past the point of diminishing return, the less they retain.

The optimal time, in my opinion, is 60 minutes, with 45 - 50 minutes being for the main presentation, allowing for a 10 - 15 minute question period at the end.

Keep it short. Keep it relevant. To have an exceptional webinar, the trick is to strike the balance between providing excellent value for the participants by providing solid content while keeping them engaged and interested.

3 Best Practices for Exceptional Webinars: How To Deliver Top Notch Virtual Presentations

Webinars are the twenty-first century way to train more learners, coach more clients and market your products and services globally from your own desktop. Here are three of my favorite webinar best practices to keep your virtual presentations top-notch.

Best practice #1: Prepare slides with maximum visual interest. Use lots of pictures and as few words as possible. Words you write may not be as visible to presenters with a smaller screen. Make an impact with images and photos. Take the time to prepare slides that are visually appealing and capture the audience's attention. Having fewer words, rather than more words also helps to protect your intellectual property. The webinar should ideally be a combination of stellar visuals combined with solid audio content and fun interaction.

Best practice #2: Expect your audience to multi-task. Research shows that over half of all webinar attendees do something else during the session. This includes checking their e-mail, playing games or engaging with social media. Think about your own experience as a webinar participant. Didn't you multi-task during the session at least once? The reality is that we have a shorter attention span when we are on line, as opposed to being in a live setting. Rather than wishing your audience's attention wasn't divided, accept this as a normal part of webinars. Take it as a challenge to keep your material engaging!

Best practice #3: Make. Every. Word. Count. Eliminate the "um"s and "ah"s from your presentation. Because you know that many of your participants will multi-task, you are doomed to lose them if you ramble or babble. Keep your verbal content crisp, clear and concise. Learn how to convey your content without reading from a script and use your voice to convey how excited you are by the material. The more "into it" you are, the more "into it" your participants will be. Capture them with concise wording delivered in an energetic way.

To-Do Lists: 6 Secrets

Are you overwhelmed by a never-ending to-do list? Do you have notes covered with tasks you need to do, but can't get to? Do you feel like you can never get caught up? You're right! You can't!

The average person has so many things to do that if they did nothing else but work on those things - didn't go to work, had no personal life, nothing - and added nothing new to their list - it would take approximately 10 weeks to get it all done! What does that tell you? It tells you no one gets everything done that's on their list!

But some people DO complete most of their to-do list every day! How in the world do they do that!? They are very selective about what they put on their list. If it's not really important, it doesn't make the list at all. If someone else can do it, they're happy to hand it off. They accept that work takes time, and you can only do so much in a day.

Be like them. You MUST set priorities. And you must be prepared to accept that some things will never get done.

Whenever you add a task to your list, include a realistic estimate of how large a block of time it will take.
Prioritize. Decide which two or three tasks absolutely MUST be done by the end of the day.
Fit the time blocks into your schedule. Identify specific times during the day when you will complete those important tasks and make an appointment with yourself. Actually enter them in your calendar. If the project is large, break it down into segments that can be done in 60-90 minutes and spread them out over however many days are necessary to get the job done. Eliminate other things if you have to.
Tackle the MOST important task first thing in the morning and get it done, before other issues grab your attention. Don't even look at your email or listen to voicemail until after the most important task is done.
Discipline yourself to stay focused and avoid distractions throughout the day. Don't be tempted to finish up all the little tasks that are nagging at you so that you can "really concentrate" on that important one. Before you know it, your day will be gone without much to show for it. Check email briefly every couple of hours if you must, but skim for those that MUST be answered immediately. Same thing for voicemail.
Remember, you will never have time to do all the things on your list, so make peace with that fact and get the most important ones done!

As with most things, the 80/20 rule applies. 20% of the tasks on your list will contribute to 80% of your success. The secret lies in determining which items really deserve to be on your list!

The First Question to Ask Before Starting a Home-Based Business

So, you have decided to start your own home-based business and stop working 9 to 5 for someone else. Congratulations!!

Now, the first question, or questions, you must ask yourself are, "Do I really want to do this?" "Do I really love or, at least, really like what I am going to do?"

Why ask these questions? The answer is motivation. If you are going to stay motivated to work, willing to put in the extra hours (yes, more than 40 hours a week), do the marketing, sales, bookkeeping, clerical work, etc, that goes with any business, then you should have a passion or, at least, a strong liking for what you are going to do if you want to be successful. Without this passion, you will over time lose your motivation and interest and eventually your business will fail. You will be back to square one with only a depleted bank account to show for it, if not worse, and will have wasted a lot of your precious time.

With passion for what you are doing, you happily put in the time to grow and maintain your business. Just think of how many times in your life you had to do a chore. Did it feel like a chore when you liked doing it? How about when you did not like what you had to do? Which was easier? The former I bet.

To paraphrase a quote I just read, do what you love and is easiest for you and charge for it. Believe me, in the end, you will have more of a chance of succeeding and you will be happy and enjoy the ride while getting there.

Now that you have asked yourself these first questions and decided what you are going to do, what else must you ask yourself and consider?

Positives and Negatives of Work From Home Business

Making money working from home is the preferred solution of more than 79 million people according to Forbes magazine. More and more people are searching for the best work from home business ideas.

One of the steps to start a small business is determining all of the positives and negatives.

Positives:
1. You do not have any additional rent for your home business location.
2. You do not have any additional utility expense for your home business.
3. You do not require any travel time or expense for a home business. A 30 second walk from your bedroom to your office does not count as travel time.
4. In the initial stages you will probably not have any employee expense.

Negatives
1. You work from home. All of the distractions of home life will constantly present themselves; these interruptions make it more challenging to focus and concentrate on business tasks. Laundry, the family, your pets, the doorbell, and the kitchen, all tempt and distract yo
2. You have to perform all tasks. You place the ads, you call the leads, you call vendors, you do the follow up calls with prospects and team members, you do the training, you do the record keeping, you do the short and long range planning and you do your own research to learn more about your new small business.
3. Wow. After all of that you are probably thinking about a nap. No can do. Until you start making money in your perfect home based business. You do not have time to waste. You are probably still working your day job. Plan at least 20 hours a week for your new business.

Being health conscious and an exercise-a-holic, I am NOT telling you to give up your sleep, give up healthy eating, or give up exercise. It will be more challenging for awhile to accomplish everything. If you need to find extra time, give up television.

Oh, your sanity is in the mix somewhere as well. I am not telling you to give up your spouse, your kids or even your tennis racquet. You WILL have to focus your time and energy carefully. No more wasted time. Carefully examine your schedule and make every minute count.

Weigh the time freedom, lower start up cost, convenience, and unlimited income potential against the discipline, time, initial investment and learning curve required for a great home based business. Employ entrepreneurial thinking. Do you have what it takes to be successful?

You may be thinking, "What if I fail?" The best way to overcome your fear of failure is to make your desire for success more powerful than you fear. What is your "why?" What is your powerful reason to push through any obstacle until you reach success?

Every business requires a powerful "why," but a home based business seems to require an even stronger why than a brick and mortar business. Maybe it is because there is a lower investment and thus it is easier to quit. You do not have a lease to break or contracts to renegotiate or transfer.
