Online Business Success: If It 'Aint Working, Fix It!

Results. Are you getting them? Whether it is in your individual ideas, goals in life or online business, there are many ways to evaluate our personal success. Of course, there is the old adage that 'success is a process' - and I am a firm believer in this one, because without it, people who have great ambition in life would have to permanently label ourselves 'unsuccessful'.

We can measure our achievements in these helpful ways:

- Results and objectives reached
- Progression in the direction of our desired goals
- Growth (new skills and self-growth that empower us to produce results)
- Productive action (which complete steps and milestones)

Have you noticed that these items were not in the list:

- Persistence
- Consistent action
- Success mindset
- Effort
- Patience
- Resilience
- Optimism
- Leadership
- Willpower

While I completely think that these are essential in getting results, unless they are a goal in their own right (e.g. to be a leader, to develop a robust success mindset, etc.) they DO NOT MEASURE success in relation to achieving your greater goals.

Therefore if you are not manifesting RESULTS in your online business, relying on persistent action, leadership or resilience is not likely to get them, UNLESS you have the vehicle, the system and the behaviors to match.

What I am really saying here, is that...

Massive action in the wrong strategy does not produce results.
Leadership in the wrong crowd or market doesn't bring results.
Perseverance in ineffective systems does not produce results.
Optimism that does not transmute into productive action does not bring results.
Endurance without individual responsibility does not produce results.
Effort without growth does not produce results.

Keep track of your success. If you are not creating real results, find out WHY! Initiate the essential adjustments, and synergise your methods, your behaviors, and your mindset.
Match your persistence and spirit to personal growth.
Match your leadership to your greater objectives.
Match your energy and personal resources to productive actions and systems that works best for you.

If you work hard, but the 'systems' aren't, it is time to change them now!!

What Businesses Lend Themselves to Working From Home?

More and more people are fed up with the daily commute, working long hours, lining someone else's pockets, a lack of flexibility regarding childcare when working - the list is almost endless.

That's why an increasing number of people are looking at other options, one of them being starting their own business working from home. There are some businesses that are very well suited to being carried out from home, others that are not quite so good. In this article, we will focus on the types of business that works well from home.

Broadly speaking, there are two types of businesses you can run from home:

-A home-based business, where part of the work is carried out outside the home but the majority still at home.

-A pure home business, where all the work you do can be undertaken from the comfort of your home.

There are, of course, many other ways to classify home businesses, but that's beyond the scope of this article.

A home-based business

This is the sort of business where you spend most of your time working from home but some of the time working outside your home, for example for client/prospect meetings, events such as fairs and shows, etc.

Types of home-based businesses

- Providing a service that can be done at home or outside, e.g. photographer/portrait artist, various types of consultancy (such as business coaching, social media management, marketing consultancy), ironing service in your own home, child minding, etc.

Much of this type of work can be done at home but it often involves meeting prospects/clients at their premises, In the case of the ironing service, you may want to offer a collection and delivery service as well and in the case of child minding, you may want to take the children out some of the time.

- Network marketing/multi-level marketing (MLM)

Although you will spend a fair amount of time working from home in an MLM business, it usually involves attending events and meetings, often in the evening or at the weekend, as well as delivering products to customers.

A Pure Home Business

As suggested above, this is the type of business you can carry out completely from home, without having to go to meetings, either with customers/prospects or suppliers. Depending on the type of business, you may, however, have to go out to purchase materials/ingredients, although this can mostly be done online.

Types of pure home businesses:

- Producing/making something, e.g. cakes, confectionery, hand-made cards, paintings, arts and craft, etc.

Depending on how you market yourself, this could turn into a home-based business, where you have to go to fairs and shows, for example, to promote and sell your products. However, if you sell online, you'll only need to make trips to the post office to ship your goods or, if you're lucky, get people to come to your house to collect their order. The latter can apply to things such as cakes for special occasions. This sort of business would really only cater for local people.

- Online selling, e.g. via eBay.

For larger or heavy items, people would have to collect from your house, so you could be completely home based, provided you have somewhere to store these items. For small and light items, you'd have to make trips to the post office, unless, of course, you use a courier who would pick up from your house.

- Providing a service, e.g. teaching something, restoring antiques, repairing small items, telemarketing

If you have a separate office where you can accommodate a minimum of one other person comfortably, you can offer courses in whatever you can teach people or be a coach; or you could use this room to repair/restore items. A friend of mine runs chocolate making workshops in her shed, another friend is a coach. This works well for them. Apart from the telemarketing, this is again restricted to local businesses and people.

- Internet marketing - different to online selling.

This is essentially selling a service or product that can be delivered online, e.g. online training, downloadable software, e-books, downloadable videos and audios, etc. This is perhaps the purest of the pure home businesses, as there's no need to purchase materials, no need to ship goods, no need to attend fairs or other events. And all you need is a computer and Internet connection, which don't have to be in a separate room. And the beauty is that this isn't limited to any specific geography, as you can target the whole world if you want.

If you're looking to start your own business working from home, this article has hopefully given you some ideas about the types of businesses that work well. You'll have to take into account whether you want to work from home all the time or work outside your home some of the time. Both have their merits.

I personally tried the MLM route but found being away in the evening for meetings and presentations and being away some weekends for meetings difficult to fit in with children and stepchildren. I therefore opted for the Internet marketing route, as it allows me to work from home the whole time and gives me the greatest flexibility.

Firstly I would like to just go on record by saying to all the mums of the world, I salute you. Having played Mrs. Doubtfire, and trying to be a house husband in my time off from work, I have no idea how you do what you do, and do it so well! Being a home manager is so frikkin hard. I find it easier to be at work than at home. You are brilliant at managing the home and the family. I am not just saying that to get brownie points from my wife, because she doesn't read my work, but it is so true. Because it is so easy for you, there are many things women can do to be one of the many work from home mums.

First things first, you need to work out how much spare time you have, then you can work out how much time you can spend per day or per week on your work from home business. Then you can decide which work from home business to pursue. Think about something that you have a passion for. In my wife's case that would be shoes, hand bags, clothes, jewellery etc etc. Just joking. But seriously though choosing something that you are passionate about will ensure this business will not feel like a chore, pardon the pun. If it's something you truly enjoy doing then that will remove that aspect.

For newer mothers, plan your time to work around your babies naptimes. And when they are awake set up a playpen in the area that you will be working in so that you can interact with your baby while working and be able to keep an eye on them at the same time.

You can work at home in many ways. For example, if you enjoy cooking, then this could be the theme to your work from home business. Set up a small bakery business and provide local grocery stores with your goods. I keep on telling my wife this because she can make a mean chocolate cake. Let me paint you a picture of what you have probably experienced already. You get sold on the benefits of a work from home program, of how you can leave you day job, make a boat load of money, be your own boss, enjoy more time with your family etc etc. You get drawn in and excited. You see all the 'proof' backing up these statements. Everything is looking great, just what you were looking for, right?? But then comes the 'add to cart' section. So you have to pay a fee to get started? How frickin annoying. Why don't they say that at the start before you get your hopes up? Probably because if they did you wouldn't carry on reading. It's a catch 22 situation my friend. Searching for a work from home opportunity is frustrating. Just like your day job, you don't pay to do it do you? No your employer pays you!! With that same thought process you need to start your own work from home business for free, and these are the 2 steps needed:

1. Affiliate Marketing is where you promote other peoples products and make money if they buy. Becoming an affiliate is easy to do and is free, just go to click bank where you can see 1000's of digital products, and commission junction for all digital and physical products. Word of advice, your profit margin is a heck of a lot higher with digital products because these can be delivered at the click of a button, so there are no shipping cost or huge production costs. Focusing your time marketing the various products that you have chosen is how you will make the money. Whilst you don't need to be a Harvard Graduate to do this, or even a computer nerd (apologies to anyone that is) you do have to take the time to educate yourself on the various marketing strategies that are used in the online business world.

2. Web Content Creation comes in the form of blogs, articles and press releases. And again you don't need to have a master's degree in English to do this. You can do what I did at uni and plagiarise the heck out of everything I read. If I read 5 articles I would do a 'Bruce Lee' and take out the best bits, get rid of the parts I didn't want, mix it all around a bit, put my own flair into it, my own style and produce one piece. Job done!! Remember I said you need to start your home based business for free, well I still stand by it but I want to let you know that if you are too scared to contemplate this then it can be outsourced to be done for you, but for a fee.

All this can be done around your day job, all that is being asked is for you to use a couple of hours a day in setting your home based business up. Just leverage the time you probably waste, you know surfing the net, on Facebook, in front of the TV etc and utilise it well.

How to Introduce Your Baking and Get Customers

Have you found the perfect product to bake? If the answer is yes - then the next ingredient to a successful home baking business is customers. Where will you find your customers?

Think About Who You Know
Think about where you go and what you do on a regular basis. Who do you run into while you're out and about? This could be family, friends, your hairdresser, social clubs, ladies clubs, church family, nurses, realtors, doctors, librarians, your insurance agent, midwives, neighbors, former co-workers, your spouse's co-workers, etc. Soon-to-be customers are everywhere you are! They will be thrilled to find someone who will provide a great product at a great price and make it convenient at the same time. And talk about freshness! They can't get freshness like that just anywhere!

How will you introduce your products?
Bake samples to introduce others to your new baking business. Tell them you are beginning a new bake-at-home business and would like their opinion on your new products. If you are uncomfortable just taking them in to the business you could ask them if they would like to see them. Be prepared to tell them how often you are going to bake (1 time a week, only on holidays, every Friday, bake to order, etc.) and how far in advance they need to place their order. The most effective way to sell your product is to let them see, smell, and taste what you are going to sell.

Be sure to ask them to consider letting you do their baking. Many will say yes. Soon you will have to decide what your limits are and how much baking you want to do.

Another way to get customers is to offer to make shower or birthday cakes, etc., as your gift. Soon word will get around that you do cakes.

If it is your turn to bring sweets to the Sunday morning coffee hour or ladies tea, make sure you bring your best. Everyone will want to know where you got your sweets. Tell them you made them and sell them in your baking business. You probably will not have to tell them they will be asking you. Let them know if they ever need something special you will be happy to make it for them.

You might want to sell at a local flea market. Be sure you know the rules of the flea market, as some do not allow this. The rules also change so check back every few months if they do not presently allow it. Selling at a flea market can be quite successful. If you want to do this and develop a customer base you should be there regularly - like the first Saturday of the month, or every Saturday. Soon they will be looking for you! Be prepared to have cards with your contact information on it for when they ask you for it. I would suggest including some individual goodies for flea markets and craft fairs as well as your usual items. My eleven year old daughter recently made up a large batch of 6-inch chocolate chip party cookies. These were undecorated and bagged in everyday storage bags. She sold every single one of them within an hour.

Having worked from home, first as an employee, now as my own boss, since 2008, I thought I would write an article about the benefits of working from home. I will include a couple of drawbacks as well, as you need to be aware of these when thinking about working from home. In my opinion, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks but everyone is different and working from home isn't for everyone.

So What Are The Benefits?

No commute

For someone who, like me, hates sitting in traffic every morning and often in the evening as well or has to spend a couple of hours a day on trains and/or the Underground, this is a brilliant benefit. It means you can either get up later or use the time you'd normally spend commuting doing productive work instead. And you either finish much earlier or again, can use the time to be productive, working on your own business if that's what you choose to go for.

Productivity

Apart from saving time not commuting, you tend to be much more productive at home because it's generally quieter, there are fewer distractions and interruptions than in an office. That should be a big bonus not just for you but also for your employer if you're employed by someone else.

Flexibility

Whether you're working for someone else or for yourself, you have much greater flexibility in what you do with your day. Sun shining? You can take a walk or go for a bike ride in the afternoon and work a little later that day or start work earlier so you can have time off in the afternoon. The same applies for doing the washing or a bit of shopping, mowing the lawn/doing some gardening, picking up the children from school, going to watch the school play, exercising, etc., provided your employer is ok with you being flexible as long as the work gets done. If they let you work from home, chances are they'll be fine with it. And if you're working for yourself, you're the boss.

Being your own boss (if you're going down the self-employed route only)

You get to decide what you do and don't do. You can work as few or as many hours as you want, bearing in mind the impact this will have on your earnings. You are totally responsible and if you do well, you can take all the credit.

Income

Depending on what you do, your earnings potential is much higher. You can determine how much you want to ear and then go out and do it. You can leverage other people's time and use multiple income streams to make this happen.

What About The Drawbacks?

Lack of interaction

Because you're on your own, it can be a little lonely sometimes. However, depending in your job, you may still have lots of telephone or face-to-face contact with people, e.g. visiting clients, talking to clients, suppliers and colleagues on the phone, etc. If none of these apply and you really need some social interaction, you can have lunch with a friend, see people when you take the kids to school or pick them up or go out with friends in the evening.

Office space

This isn't a proper drawback but I thought I'd better bring this to your attention. While office space isn't essential, it does help in many jobs if you have an office so that you can keep work and home separate. But don't worry if you don't have a separate room, as long as you have somewhere where you can concentrate and that doesn't have an impact on the home out of working hours.

Being your own boss (if self-employed)/getting the work done

Hang on, I hear you say, you had being your own boss down as a benefit. Yes, that's true, and whilst being your own boss can be great, you are totally responsible for everything, success as well as failure. And because you have no-one to tell you what to do, you have to be motivated and disciplined enough to do the work required to achieve your goal. So if you're disciplined and self-motivated, this isn't a drawback at all.

As you can see, there are some huge benefits to working from home and if you're disciplined and self-motivated and can cope with it getting a little lonely sometimes, this could just be the thing for you.

I am like many of you. I am fortunate to have a job, and it is a job which I enjoy, but there is very little hope for true financial security with this job alone. In the interest of providing a better situation for my family, I began looking for other opportunities. Opportunities which would allow me to keep the job I have while slowly, as I am able, expand into something larger. Finding legitimate home business opportunities proved to be quite a challenge. There are, as you no doubt know, multitudes of scams and generally undesirable options on the internet. You really have to do your due diligence to sift through the dirt and rocks to find the gold nuggets.

What I have decided is best for me, with my current job and lack of disposable funds, is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing allows you to sell established products through your own website, blog, etc. You do not keep any inventory, so there is no storage issues. You do not do any cold selling. You do not have to recruit anyone, namely your family and friends. You simply have to find products or companies you like which will allow you to become an affiliate. After that, you have to drive internet users to your website. There are several ways to do this. It may sound difficult, but it really is not. It is one of the best legitimate home business opportunities out there. What you are doing is harnessing the power of the internet and the hundreds of millions of users to find your niche. With some research and guidance, your goals are very attainable.

You will have to go through some training. But there are many free resources in the form of articles, YouTube videos, etc. For the Baby Boomer generation, affiliate marketing could be a wonderful way to generate a supplemental income.
