Guide to Using Google's Webmaster Tools

With Google Webmaster Tools, you will be able to track various things, like the number of people who have visited your blog, the keywords that have led to your blog, who has back-linked you and the traffic you receive from them, as well as indicate if your blog has been hijacked. With such features, organizing your blog will be easier. Here is how you can use the tool for your blog.

First of all, go to Google Webmaster Tools. You can enter a search query to get to the page. Then, you will need to sign into your Google account. If you do not have a Google account, you will need to register for one. All you will need to do is to create an e-mail address and its password. Once you have entered the account, the page you will see is your dashboard. In the middle of the page towards the bottom, you will see a button that says 'Add a site'. Clicking it will open up a small field for you to enter your site's URL. Make sure the blog that you enter is yours because only the owner can complete the verification section, which you will be led to after clicking 'Continue'; the page would be called 'Verify ownership'. Your verification status should be 'Not Verified', so you will need to get it verified to enjoy the Webmaster Tools' features.

There will be several options available: 'add a DNS to your domain's configuration'; 'add a meta tag to your site's home page'; 'upload an HTML file to your server'; or 'link to your Google Analytics account'. Choose the option according to your blog's abilities, and there will be instructions that will guide you to what you will need to do to complete the verification process. The simplest thing you can do is to 'add a meta tag to your site's home page', which will require you to add the HTML codes given into your blog's template. Once you have saved the settings in your blog's template, you can come back to the verification page. Then, click 'Verify', and you are done.

Google's Sandbox and How to Get Out

The Theory.

Google's "sandbox", also know as aging filter, is a penalty Google imposes on new websites and websites that have been behaving bad (applying "Black Hat SEO Tactics"). One thing to keep in mind, Google doesn't care when you have purchased your domain name (example.com) but rather when was the first time your page was placed on the web to be found by their robots. Now, you might be asking; "why should I get penalised if I'm not doing anything wrong?", this is, as hard as you might try not to believe it, a very frequent question. The reason is, Google only wants to index serious websites, thousands of new websites are placed on Google's index every month but only a few make it past the 6-8 months mark, so, indexing these sites will be a waste of time.

How to get out of the "sandbox"?

The simplest answer is YOU DON'T. The "sandbox" is not something you can get out of by paying more money, writing letters or the like. This is an automatic filter in Google's search engine algorithm that applies to all new sites and sites that Google deem be braking the rules in accordance to their search engine standards.

Now, how can your play nice in the "sandbox"? Well if you're looking to rank high for broad keywords; example "Nike Shoes" you won't at this stage, do you know how many websites use this keyword?, millions.

So, the trick her is, go for less fatter cow (less targeted keywords) like "Nike shoes for sale in " or "brand new Nike shoes for sale". These type of keywords are know as a long tail keywords. Long tail keywords can be targeted at a niche market, if there's a lot of searches on that market with little competition, then your website will be on Google's first top 10 results in no time.

If a your site appears between the first 10 results, does it mean you're out of the "sandbox"?, the answer is; NO, but it will for sure feel like it. There are many tricks SEO companies (like us) can do to have a website rank high while in the "sandbox" while applying "White Hat SEO Tactics". I'm going to cover some of them next.

Tips for ranking high while in the "sandbox"

Gather Backlinks: Backlinks are incoming links from other websites. As time passes, the acquisition of good links can land your website to the top for your preferred keywords instead of less popular ones. Google rank well websites from well established and trusted sources, CNN, Fortune 500 sites and the likes. You do not have to wait until Google takes your website out of the "sandbox" in fact, if enough good links are acquired from trusted sources your website can be out of the "sandbox" in less than the 6-8 months period.

Concentrate on less popular keywords: like I mentioned above, concentrating in broad keywords at the starting phase of the SEO campaign can be a big mistake as there will be much competition from well established domains. Concentrate your efforts on long less popular keywords and your site will be at the top in no time.

Plan ahead of time: contrary to what many believe, planning ahead of time the lunch of a website can be a HUGE time saver. As soon as a website a live Google's internal clock will start ticking and by the time your website is ready you will have a few months ahead.

Buy expire/old domains: Many people don't know this, but if instead of purchasing a new domain you can buy an old/expired one you will have a head start, remember the sandbox effect affect new sites the most, so if an old domain is purchased, you will have less problems.

Target other search engines: Many people tend to think that their website will only be found in Google, but the fact is there are other search engines that can be targeted as well; Yahoo, Bing, and Alexa - not very well known, but extremely important.

Patience, Patience, Patience...: Most important of all; be patient, I know in this time and day we want everything to be done fast, but there's somethings we cannot avoid. Patience is a virtue, exercise it if your considering an SEO campaign, trust me, it will help you on your website marketing efforts. Simply, accept the fact that if you have a new website it will take a while to get good rankings.

Google's Unpublished Style Guide

I have been using Internet regularly for the last 11-12 years. So far, I would have signed-up for at least a hundred web services such as emails and ezines, inattentively checking out the "terms and conditions" checkbox - that is, without a slightest understanding of what their terms condition, and what their conditions term. I don't bother because: one, I do not perceive big security threat, and two, I am allergic to the legalese of those privacy policies.

However, Google is one among the very few exceptions to my "turn a blind eye" policy, when it comes to reading user information online. I read almost everything Google says to the users of its mails, documents, etc for, even its privacy policy highlights are as engaging as its renowned design or software principles to read. To me, Google's language, just like its products, is a key factor that positions the company as an innovator.

Google may not come up with a style guide yet - maybe, never on its own. But, if at all there is going to be one, it should not be about how Google uses simple and clear language alone. The secret to better language and consistency lies in better integration of corporate or management thinking - that goes into developing a product - into developing content. Google's excellence in communication can be attributed to its styling of its talking to match its thinking style.

The main reason why there could be mis-alignments between words and expressions of a company, and its products, could be that the company in question does not think former as a product by itself. Hence, no investment in terms of time, effort and money, go into corporate communication. Google produces thousands of pages - it blogs, publishes help files, moderates forums, every day. But the content, despite of quantity, give an impression that they are developed under the influence of its corporate philosophy, just like how its products like Gmail are.

The other side of the coin is products. Goodness of a product play a major role in the reach of language. A prominent example is Sony's naming of Walkman. When Masaru Ibuka, co-founder of Sony, produced a pocket-sized personal stereo, he chose to name it "Walkman". Though it's a noun, the name of a proprietary product, his representatives who were to market the product were skeptic about the name, because it was grammatically incorrect. However, Walkman as a word, since it echoed the sense of freedom the product offered, and the product, were universal hit. In 1986 Oxford English Dictionary included Walkman in its vocabulary.

While, there are Codes of Conduct to govern business practices, and guidelines for product design, why should companies not pay attention to evolve an official style guide for corporate communication that would effectively contribute to corporate brand building? After all, communication is the third most important facet of a corporate personality - the other two, being: product and business practices. In fact, communication - both, internal and external - is directly responsible for brand building.

I would say that the purpose of a corporate style guide - unlike the AP Style Guides of the world that concern mainly about correct usage of language, is to offer better choices of words and expressions for a company's stakeholders that reflect the style of thinking and style of action that can be captured in its product design and business practices, respectively.

Since there is no understanding of the need for such an integrated communication that goes beyond language, companies do not put the required effort to better communication. Though, management organises structured meetings for product development, no where there is news about high level meetings for corporate social communication.

I think the starting point could be assigning a communication professional to come up with a corporate style guide for all written communication. Though the grammar part of it can come from Chicago Manual of Style, the definition of industry terms, product positioning, etc can be created indigenously to make sure that the choice of words go well with the characters of the company.

Generate Web Traffic - 10 Tips

You know that people are hungry for what you have to offer and you know that they are searching online for it. The problem is you can't find them and they can't find you. It's like you're both in a very dark room with lots of other people in it making lots of noise and everyone has a blindfold on. And while you know that each other is there you don't know what to do to find each other. If only there were some signal you could give or a noise you could make that could bring you together...

Well how to generate web traffic is essentially the same problem. How to get your potential customers or clients is the same as trying to get someone in a crowded, dark room with a blindfold on to find you.

There are many 'signals' you can use to help people find you in that dark room. Some are paid signals and some are free. So I have made a list of 10 things you can do relatively quickly to get people coming to your site.

1. Make sure the words on your landing page are the same as the words someone has typed in to find someone like you, also make sure you aren't competing with lots of other sites with exactly the same words!
2. Open a Social Networking account (Facebook, Twitter, Linked In or You Tube) target those in the niches you are trying to attract, then send posts there with links back to your site
3. Articles - this is one of my favourite ways to send good quality traffic. Write a short (300 word) article and post it up on EzineArticles.com. If you don't like writing go to elance.com and get someone else to do it for you
4. Maybe you like creating short videos - create one then use trafficgeyser.com to get it out there - but remember to tag it with the right keywords
5. Try a press release at PRweb - this will generate web traffic
6. 'Ping' your latest blog post at pingomatic.com - this sends out your message right across the internet for servers to pick up
7. We've already mentioned Social Networking - but only the non-paid aspect. Try an ad on Facebook or Linked In
8. Submit your site to the top directories like DMOZ.org or dir.yahoo.com These are considered high authority by Google so will help you to get up the search results pages
9. Among my all-time favourite ways to drive quality traffic is Google's Pay-per-click system 'AdWords'. This is a paid solution but you will get a better return on your investment with this than virtually any other form of advertising.
10. Don't forget good old 'word of mouth' - any networking event or potential client you meet should get your business card with your website address on it.
11. Bonus tip - As you may be aware, traffic comes from having the right keywords and many of the above techniques rely on the relevance and power of your keywords. But the right keywords for your business may not be the ones you think they are. Don't just choose keywords that have tons of search because these are likely to have tons of competition. So pick keywords without too much competition. Go to Googles' keywordtoolexternal and this will show you how to do this.

Now I know that not everyone is in a position to take action on all of these techniques. So just try one or two and get started. If you are familiar with some of them and are already using them, then try one of the others.

Also bear in mind web traffic is not easy - it takes time, energy and money. You need to be able to invest at least one of these, two is better, and the best results will come from investing all three.

Take this seriously and you will generate web traffic. Remember, the dark room - each technique you get good at is a light switched on or a blindfold removed and the more you do the more you get - generate web traffic now. http://sellmyknowledgeonline.com/generatewebtraffic/

10 Google Search Tips You Probably Didn't Know

For years Google has been the #1 search engine, followed by Yahoo! and Bing; however despite the search engines clever ability to give users what they are looking for, many people do not know how to properly search. Rather than wading through pages of results, here are 10 tips you may not have known about using Google search...

1. Either/or: Unless told otherwise, Google will search for pages which contain all the words that are in the search box. If you are searching for pages that have one term or another, use the OR operator -- or use the "|" symbol. Social | Media | Master

2. Exact Phrase: If you want to search for an exact phrase, use quotes. "social media master is awesome" and Google will only search for that exact phrase.

3. Negative Searches: If you do not want a particular word to show up in the search results, use the "-"symbol. For example, -social media master would return pages which contain "media" and "master" but not "social."

4. Similar Terms: Using the "~" symbol will return terms that are similar to what you typed in the search bar. For example, searching for ~funny social media cartoons will also return amusing social media cartoons and similar phrases.

5. Music Related: If you are searching for a song, lyrics, or music related terms, use the "music:" operator. For example, music:love will return songs pertaining to love.

6. Movies: Users can use the "movie:" operator to search for a movie title along with either a zip code, postal code or city and state/province to obtain a list of movie theatres in the area as well as show times.

7. Definitions: If you are looking for the definition of a word and would prefer not to use dictionary.com, you can use the "define:" operator to get a quick definition. For example, define:social media will give you a few different definitions from different sources.

8. Calculator: If you are already on Google and need to perform a quick calculation, type it in the search box using the +,-,/,* and = symbols to perform a mathematical equation.

9. Number Range: If you are searching for specific dates or a specific date range, type in the dates in the search bar. For example, best selling novels 2000..2010 will return a list of best selling novels from each year between 2000 and 2010.

10. Conversions: If you need to perform a quick conversion, such as feet to meters or inches to centimetres, type it in Googles search bar. For example, 7.5 inches in yards will give you the exact conversion.

Remember, if you cannot remember any of these operators, you can always use Google's advanced search option to help you find exactly what you are looking for.

Will Google's SEO Power Remain After Street View Fiasco?

When you're the biggest people tend to go after you.

Man U were the best team throughout the 90's but everyone loved to have a dig at them, Schumacher for Ferrari, Woods, Leicester Tigers...I'm sure I could think of more sporting references but I'll stop there.

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about the Australian government complaining about Google's Street-View cars obtaining data about people's wireless connections.

Now a Spanish organization, the Association for the Prevention and Investigation of Crime, Abuse and Malpractice in Information Technology and Advanced Communications (Apedanica), is taking Google to court over the same issue.

Intercepting telecommunications carries between one and four years prison time in Spain and Miguel Angel Gallardo, the Apedanica president, obviously believes this wasn't a simple mistake, he said "something which was carefully programmed and has been done in 30 countries can't be an error".

Over the last month, the street cars have been banned in Austria and Greece, while the Italians are investigating the cars.

If Google was a smaller company would the countries be as angry?

Does Google's size stop it from making "genuine" mistakes?

If Google's power is curtailed will this have any effect on SEO? Well, people seem to be talking up Bing at the moment but market share wise it's so far off Google.

Google would probably need to be the cause of a massive oil spill, tsunami and small pox outbreak before Bing overtook its share of the market.

Google is trying to make itself a company that the World needs, that every business needs to be listed and every search needs to go through, but when does anyone ever want the successful, powerful and massive team to win? (I've asked too many rhetorical questions, haven't I? Sorry).

I doubt if anyone from Google Spain will go to prison, maybe they'll have to pay a fine, it's just your typical little guy trying to ruin the Man.

Earning a Full Time Income Selling on the Web

If you want to attain true financial freedom, you must work for yourself. Being an employee does not open many doors for building wealth and passive income, and you cannot leverage yourself to earn a continuously growing income. The bottom line is that you should attempt to work for yourself, even if it only be part time or on the side.

Beginning a business is less complicated than you suspect, it needs a few steps that are simply finished to get your new home business off the ground. Step one is to perform some research into a product which interests you. There are several industries that are totally flooded and it'd be a waste of your time getting into. It a segment is completely saturated, you may have a hard time mining out your fortune. It is best to choose a small niche that has little competition and a lot of opportunity for growth.

When you've chosen your product, you want to get an internet site built. There are a great many website builders that take out all of the technical aspects of website development. A lot of them have templates which make building an internet site as simple as writing a letter. Once you have got your site successfully running you have to be in a position to take payments over the Net, the best way to do that is to set-up a PayPal business seller account. Ensure your web site is inaccuracy free and can finish a sale correctly.

You might want to use your own credit card and sell your self something in a test run. You now have a need to advertise your site, you can do this in lots of alternative ways. I would suggest Google's Pay-Per Click system, but only after you find a sales campaign that works. PPC gives results nearly right away, so you can be in profits from day one with the right product and sales site. You need to watch you spend though. I would also suggest beginning to do some S.E.O (search website Optimization) so you'll eventually be in a position to dismal yourself off Googles pay-per-click system.

By building a content rich website, perhaps containing a number of informative articles that people in your niche would be interested in, is a good way to make use of a wide range of search terms that relate to your product. It can take time before you see results from your SEO efforts, but in time you will be rewarded for them with a lifetime of free traffic, leads, and sales.

You may also consider selling your product on eBay, and thru other sellers online. If you have a product that sells well, you may consider building an affiliate program around your sales business. By offering to pay affiliate a percentage of each sale, you can get hundreds of even thousands of experienced marketers promoting your products for you.

Daegan Smith - The Maximum Leverage Rip Off Report Exposed!

Daegan Smith has helped thousands of entrepreneurs reach success quickly in the internet and network marketing business. Or, at least that is what he claims right? Yet, why is it that when one Googles Daegan Smith scam or maximum leverage scam, we see a scam buster site and a rip off report site at the very top with nothing but negative experiences with Daegan Smith?

Could it be that Daegan Smith really is a Scam? or Could it be that he has been incidentally "painted" to look that way? Reading rip off reports and scam sites can be like using a double edged sword. Why? Think about it.

When you actually read these reports, you are searching for the truth! You stumbled onto a website like Maximum Leverage which talks about making a boatload of money and living the life of your dreams as your being trained by some guy named Daegan Smith.

Well, at least that's how some might see it.

If you actually take a look at Maxumum leverage overall, then you'd realize it's much deeper than making a boatload of money and living the life of your dreams. You'd realize that it's alot more specific, as Daegan Smith focuses on the "How To" aspect that is geared towards getting you started with taking action today. The free information alone has the undeniable potential to help you get leads for your business or make some money.

Anyway, I digress, as I don't want to get off topic here. So as a person begins to see the potential of using Maximum Leverage to live a lifestyle like Daegan Smith claims to live, suddenly it happens...

The BS alert goes off. They think, "It's too good to be true".

So what do they do next?

They search for negative feedback on Daegan Smith and his Maximum Leverage program through rip off reports and scam sites and that is exactly what they find. Some will tell themselves that they're relieved as they read through the dreaded threads of consumer complaint after consumer complaint.

They might say, "Thank God I didn't fall for that one."

However, I'd ask you to take a more thorough look at what you'll see right along with those rip off report and scam complaints. First, you'll probably see positive feedback. People that have had positive experiences with Daegan Smith and his Maximum Leverage program.

But the Postive Feedback isn't good enough is it? Surely we can count those right?

Then what you'll see next is Daegan Smith and his Customer Service reps fighting back and not just taking the blows delivered by all these consumer complaints. They do it in the rip off report rebuttals and responses of the scam discussion forums, that matter. Hmmm... Now that is interesting? Who do we believe here?

If you're research stops here and you decide that Daegan Smith and his Maximum leverage program are a scam, then you may be doing yourself a HUGE disservice. Daegan Smith clearly believes in his Maximum Leverage program and has taken it to these consumers by rebutting and responding with respect and clarity to these complaints.

How many companies or individuals take the time to do that?

Out of all the rip off reports and scam sites I looked at, not many... And that's not to say that just because a company or individual does not defend themselves that they can be a guaranteed scam. Yet, it doesn't mean that they can't either.

My point to this entire article is that your decision shouldn't be based solely on a rip off report or scam site. If you're serious about getting involved with guys like Daegan Smith or programs like Maximum Leverage, then do yourself a favor and do some thorough research. Take advantage of the many social sites like Facebook or Twitter and connect with Daegan. I'd ask him straight up, if I was seriously considering the truth. Read his success stories from people who have positive feedback to give, then go see what they're up to outside the testimonials.

Ask other industry leaders what they're opinion is and see if they can give you an objective view, without pitching you on why you should be with them instead of Daegan Smith. A real industry leader will tell you the real deal!

Some may think this is doing too much and it may not be worth the time. However, I beg to differ. If you end up stopping your research at a rip off report or scam site, then you may miss out on an opportunity of a life time. I think we can call agree that a real legitimate opportunity of a lifetime is worth all our time and every penny. As long as we see a return of course.

Who are you getting your reviews from to make your decisions?

Competition can get really ugly out there, and you never know who is on the other end of the computer writing that "consumer complaint". I'm not saying, it's not an actual consumer. All I'm saying is...you never know. Not only that, but some people do not take the time to thoroughly read what they're getting themselves into, they might think they'll get rich overnight, or even worse...they don't even implement what they're being taught. So what do they do, they get frustrated and they might say stuff like "Daegan Smith is a Scam" or "Maximum Leverage is a Rip off"

If the consumer your reading about didn't understand what they were doing or didn't give Daegan or his Maximum Leverage program a fair shot, then how can you do an honest assesment on whether you should get involved or not.

Personally, I've looked at Daegan Smith's Maximum Leverage website and the value he offers there is solid and proven. The strategies he uses to make money and get leads into his business are incredible and the fact that you get alot out of his Free Videos is powerful in itself. I've learned so much and am truly inspired by the value he brings to the home based business industry.

Unraveling Google's Algorithms

For a long time Google's algorithms have remained a mystery to us all. Well, not exactly all of us, since Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and a handful of techies at Google know the 'secrets'. What are these algorithms? What do they do? How do they work?

To understand the importance of Google's algorithms, you must first understand what happens when a term is entered into Google's search engine. When you search for a term, Google's robots scan the web to find web pages that contain information pertaining to the term that you entered. These pages are entered into an index. They are then analyzed and sorted by the algorithms. The page that contains the most relevant information is ranked first. Subsequent pages are ranked according to the relevancy of the information they contain. All this, as you know, happens in a few microseconds.

As you can imagine, Google's algorithms do an unfathomably massive job of analyzing millions of web pages and ranking them according to the information they contain. Considering that Google gets several hundred million queries every day, you can imagine the kind of work put in to these algorithms.

Apart from the developers, no one really knows how Google's algorithms work. It is, however, well known that the search engine uses a number of contextual signals (more than 200) to rank web pages that contain relevant information. These signals include anchor text, web page title, location, external link popularity, diversity of link sources, and many, many more. Using these signals, the algorithms are able to rank web pages in the right order.

Google changes its algorithms continuously, making sure people receive the most relevant results when they search the web for information. In 2007 alone, Google tweaked its algorithms more than 400 times.

Interestingly, there is absolutely no human involvement with respect to the results generated by Google's algorithms. If a Google query for some reason returned irrelevant items, the results could not be manually reordered. The guys at Google would have to analyze the algorithms, check for the weaknesses causing the problem, and find a solution. This explains why the developers spend so much time tweaking the algorithms. It helps to ensure that we receive the best results on a consistent basis.

Someone once described Google's algorithms as 'a work in progress'. It is possibly the best description as these algorithms are dynamic in every sense of the word. As you are reading this article, a developer at Google is probably tweaking algorithms. This kind of explains why Google's competitors have such a tough time catching up with it.
