How to Start and Run a Successful Online Home-Based Business - Part One

People want to know what percentage of marketing or business in online and how they can get started.

I thought of the last time I turned on the television without seeing a dot com shown, display or scrolling across the television screen. And found out that most commercial have a web address.

I thought of the last time I drove for about 10 minutes in a city without seeing a web address looking at me from across the street. And found out that most businesses have web address. I concluded that most businesses are online. If you are not online, your neighbor or competitor, with the same type of business as yours is.

Both small and large companies are spending millions of dollars on internet marketing campaigns every year. And more and more people are getting onto and using the internet every day. In addition to that, there is no other form of business that I know of that is easier or cheaper to get into than online home-based business. Now how do you start your own internet or online home-based business?

Before you jump into it head first, I want to warn you that marketing online does take work. It actually takes lots of work. Do not listen to people who believe that it is as easy as just joining a successful company for $499 or buying a $499 product, working 2 hours a day and then you begin receiving shower of riches. If you are thinking of starting or having a successful internet business, expect to work hard.

Please know that successfully online marketing takes time, effort and some monetary investment. Accept that anything can be marketed online but, not everything is good to market online. Some things do better than others. For something to be successfully marketed online, it should be something you are not sure of where to find it or how much it cost and have to search for it or Google it.

You have to find out whether there are good niche opportunities for the products and/or services you want to market. A good online marketing or business niche has the following three great characteristics:

1. People involve are normally find in group. They hang out with others in person and online to share common interest.

2. People in involve are emotionally connected. They treat whatever they are promoting as something of great value and will do what it takes to support them, including spending lots of money.

3. People involve are already spending money on them. The members are spending money on their interests and they do it often.

Determine whether there is enough search volume for the keywords you are going to target and find out what it is going to take to compete in your chosen niche by doing a search of your determined keyword. Run your keyword in Google, Yahoo, and Bing. You want to target those keywords or keyword phrases with at least 200 to 300 searches per day (high search volume) with less competitors. You can find a good tool for this job by searching for "AdWords keyword tool" in Google, get it and follow the instruction.

Size up the competition by doing a quick search in the top 3 search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing) for the keywords you want to target. Take a look at the top 10 to 20 sites and determine the following:

1. Are these sites professionally designed?
2. Do they have a clear call to action?
3. Is the content compelling and current?
4. What are they doing right?
5. What are they doing wrong? Use it to improve your site.
6. Are there any blogs or social networking in this niche?
7. How can you make your product, service and/or expertise stand out from the rest?

You are doing this to determine whether you will be able to compete in this niche. You will also determine your ability to get into this project, amount of time you are willing to spend it, and the amount of money you are able to invest to really compete in this niche.

Next, you need a website. The quickest and easiest way to build search engine friendly sites, that are easy to manage, is to use WordPress. Even if you are not going to utilize WordPress' blogging features, it is still an excellent tool for quickly deploying websites. You can also build your website by using templates and website building software.

Is Your Home Office Ready For Business?

While there are many advantages working from home, finding an appropriate space to do business without interruption is not one of them. Take a moment and think back to your typical work week prior to becoming an entrepreneur. How many of your desktops were cluttered with baby wipes and leaking sippy-cups on a daily basis? Did you find yourself sifting through a pile of bills, permission slips, and men's magazines just to find your day planner? Not likely the norm for most.

Let's face it, with a home office comes many challenges. One of the most difficult is learning how to set boundaries with family members. My son is almost 8 years old and still feels I should be available to him while I'm at the computer or on the phone with a client. For the longest time, my kids assumed I would rather play computer games than hang out with them! I had no idea that my work, in their eyes, looked like "playing".

If you are like me, and love what you do, then none of these challenges changes your desire to run your own business. No obstacle will prevent you from enjoying the flexibility that allows you to spend more time with your family. Let's see what we can do to give your home business a little more structure and organization. Take one or two of these ideas, and turn your challenges into successes!

* Take periodic "coffee" breaks to give visit with your kids. Let them know ahead of time how many breaks you plan to take; two in the morning, one in the afternoon. Thank them in your a special way for their patience.
* Set clear boundaries with your family. Understanding why you are not available even though you are home is very difficult, even for your spouse! To limit interruptions during an important call, prepare them beforehand, and set your expectations for the duration of the call.
* Dedicate ONE space in your home for an office. Even though sharing an office space is more common than not, my advice is to keep all of your files, resources, and supplies in one location. The only work item that should move about the house is your laptop.
* Keep personal papers separate from your business files. If you share your office space, chances are there is a pile of personal files, banking statements, and your teenager's project notes cluttering the desktop. Define a function for each desk drawer, bookshelf cubby, and filing cabinet drawer. Clearly label these areas for quick access.
* Don't hesitate to get help from friends or hire a part time sitter. Organize one play date each week with a friend and schedule those "quiet" hours accordingly. Find out what days your teenage babysitter gets home early from school, or better yet, the days she/he has off. Why not pay a sitter for a few hours every month? While you "focus" on your work, the kids could be playing at the park down the street. A win-win solution for a minimal cost.

What I Learned While Building an Amway Business With the World Wide Dream Builders & Mike Popovich!

I was fortunate to work with a "successful diamond" named Mike Popovich. Mike was a former Air Force Officer when he joined Amway. Maybe that's why I respected him so much. He was also nice, funny, and friendly.

My Line of Sponsorship was with the "World Wide Dream Builders" also known as WWDB, which was based in Spokane, Washington. WWDB provided training and motivation for Amway distributors within its organization.

Although my Amway journey only lasted a few years, I learned many valuable lessons from my upline, Mike Popovich, and from other "World Wide Dream Builders" diamonds. I wanted to share a few of those lessons with you.

1. Write down your goals - If you want to achieve success in anything, you must set goals. You must write these goals down on paper and set a date of when you want to achieve your goals.

2. Find Mentors - If you are trying to obtain a specific goal, it behooves you to find someone who has already done what you're trying to do. Your objective is to learn from their mistakes, so you don't have to make the same mistakes. You can communicate with mentors in person or by reading about other successful people.

3. Readers are Leaders - The most successful people in the world are avid readers. The more you read, the more you learn. More importantly, what you read and who you hang out with will determine who you will become in the next five years.

4. Perseverance - All great accomplishments require hard work and guts. Throughout your journey, you will fail from time-to-time. What separates the people who make it big from the ones who don't, is the ability to stick through with your original decision, even after the initial excitement has worn off.

5. Consistency - If you do a little bit every day, it compounds over time. If you want to lose 25lbs in a year, all you need to do is lose about 1 ounce per day. To achieve big success, you need to be consistent. You can't keep stopping and starting and expect something big to happen.

6. Nothing is accomplished alone - To make it big, you need to develop a team. No one is "self-made." Everyone, successful or not, has had others help them along the way. If you have a big goal, you must find others to help you. That way, you can utilize each person's strengths and work as a team.

7. Success - I used to think success equals fame and money. I've since learned that success is really "getting what you want out of life." Happiness is enjoying what you get. Fame and money in and of itself is neither good or bad. It's what you do with that fame and money.

I can truly say that my time in Amway and World Wide Dream Builders positively shaped the rest of my adult life. Although I did not achieve huge success or go Diamond, I did learn what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur and person. It's the best "business education" I've ever had.
