When You Run Your Own Business, Sometimes There's No Place Like Home

I've been doing a lot of interviews lately. Most of the questions I'm asked, although very good ones, have been pretty much the same. But this week during a Q&A with a blogger, I was asked something that no one had ever inquired about before: "What was the best business decision you've made so far since starting your designer kids' clothes business, LikeWear?" My answer was spontaneous as we were on the phone and I was not prepped ahead of time with what I would be asked. Without so much as a split second thought, my response was: "keeping my business run from my house."

When my husband Ken reads this answer he will surely be shocked as I'm constantly complaining about how each day LikeWear seems to take over another square foot of our living space. Not to mention the concerns I have over our lack of privacy with the parade of employees we have in and out of our front door each day. And then there's the havoc caused to my type A psyche with all the clutter, noise and general disarray as a natural result of so many operational functions operating out of my home sweet home.

But, the idea of moving the business out of our house into its own home, just doesn't sit well with me right now. We've been able to stay very lean and cost conscious because we don't have additional overhead, maintenance and extra staffing to worry about, which an outside office would demand. And yes, our in-house warehousing space is limited but it's forced us to maintain modest inventory levels so we don't end up with overruns and large quantities of unused merchandise at the end of each season. And certainly, we have lots of people in and out of our house on a regular basis, but that has required us to only hire people we really trust and can rely on. And last but definitely not least, as a mother, having my business run from my house has meant being able to physically be around for my kids. LikeWear's birth originated from my small time hobby and rather quickly became a part-time job which then blossomed into a full-time job and which has now evolved into what often feels like an all-the-time job. But, I'm at home while I'm doing it. Working "all the time" outside of the house is not something I'm mentally prepared to do at this stage of my life.

So for now as I grumble about the chaos, clutter and claustrophobic working conditions, I'll continue to remind myself that when it comes to running our designer kids' clothes business - at least for now - there's no place like home.

Neglect makes a machine useless. Dust, sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperatures wreak havoc. Oils and other lubricants deteriorate making the machine work improperly or fail entirely.

A machine needs regular cleaning and oiling to prevent problems and maximize results. Schedule a few minutes to clean and oil your equipment every five hours of actual sewing.

The first area to clean is the bobbin area. Lint and debris collect here. Remove the needle plate, covers, bobbin, bobbin carrier, and hook if front loaded. Use a probe, small brush, and forced air to clean out the area. Then apply one drop of oil to the hook race. Reassemble. Do this every five hours of sewing.

Clean the needle bar area every half dozen hours. This is the area where you find you needle bar, tension assembly, and presser foot assembly. Remove the cover. Clean away all debris. Look for and eliminate all stray threads. Be sure to clean between the tension discs. These are located inside the upper tension assembly. Apply one drop of oil wherever metal parts move, connect, or contact each other. Use only good quality sewing machine oil. Avoid household oils because they contain contaminants.

Periodically, a more extensive cleaning is needed to maintain optimum function. This is commonly referred to a a tune up, full service, or a clean oil and adjust. Many users prefer to have a skilled technician perform this service, however, in most cases you can do this yourself.

The tune up or full service is often performed by a skilled technician by following a long checklist of dis-assembly, cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, parts replacement, reassembly, and testing. Complete training to help you do this yourself is available.

Some of the more challenging repairs that you machine might need at some time include changing gears, replacing hook assembly, replacing needle bar, or similar parts replacements. To perform these repairs properly, requires considerable training and experience. If you choose to perform these more extensive repairs yourself, do so under the supervision or assistance of a professional or expert technical support through one of the training programs.

At one time every user was expected to maintain their own machines. Today you can still do your own. It is easy to learn and do. Consistent and regular servicing keeps your machine operating at peak performance for long periods of time. Then your annual tune up can refurbish it for many more years of precious service. It looks so absolutely legitimate. After all, the email says it is coming from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the FBI of the United States of America. A supposedly legitimate agent's name is there with all his personal contact information. Who would not trust the FBI?

The scam artists who have now turned to the internet to find their victims are sending bad emails even using the United States Government agencies as fronts. Some also say they are with the Social Security Administration on occasion to try and cheat honest people out of their hard earned money.

Federal agencies and banks have indicated that they will NEVER ask people to give personal information such as social security numbers and bank account numbers over emails. Sometimes it appears that the bank or agency is simply trying to verify their information to see if they have correct details so they ask you to supply the numbers and verification. If you ever receive an email asking for this personal information over an email, do not give it out. Even if it looks legitimate and seems to have actually come from your own bank, just delete the email or forward it to your bank. Call your bank and let them know about the email. After all, they are probably giving the bank a bad name.
