How Do I Market Myself: Start Online

Last week a big thick yellow phone book was delivered to my front door. Ten years ago, I would have been happy to receive it, gently putting it in my cupboard for later reference. But today I felt a twinge of guilt as I put the brand new big thick book in my recycling bin without looking up a single number.

I kept it for a full week, just for old time sake, but I'm a practical person and in my household the big thick phone book "Old Yeller" has become largely obsolete. Several years ago I cleared out the cupboard where I kept "Old Yeller" and filled it with cookbooks. So I ceremoniously chucked Old Yeller away to be recycled because when I need to find a plumber, I go online. If I'm looking for a good recipe, I go online. Even if I'm looking for a neighbor's phone number, I go online.

As a writer, thinking about internet marketing or my online presence isn't really my idea of fun. However, the way the world exchanges information continues to change, and having an online presence has become more and more crucial for success today in every field. Just like I don't pull out Old Yeller anymore, many people don't visit the brick and mortar bookstore when they want a new book. Instead, they sit down at their computer and search for good books, often immediately downloading a new novel onto their kindle. When people need information today, they go to their computer. This means when it's time for me to market my new book, I should go to my computer too and make my presence on the World Wide Web.

So I'm putting away my guilt about chucking the phone book. And since I haven't looked at those old cookbooks in quite a while either, maybe I'll chuck them too and get myself another new kitchen gadget to take their place.

Take it at Face Value - Why You Shouldn't Believe Everything You Read and See Online

While there is a ton of useful and valid information online, you must remember that there is also a bunch of junk along with it. It can be a daunting task to sift through a lot of information that doesn't make any sense, and was just posted online in order to fool the search engines into thinking it is valid. If you reach the end of something you read and are scratching your head with more questions than when you started, you're probably the victim of poor information. Let's dissect the different kinds of bad information online, and why you should take it all with a grain of salt.

Deliberately False Information - If you spend any amount of time on Wikipedia you will notice that some of their pages get locked. This usually occurs when a star is in the news for a controversial story, or if they just passed away. The reason they lock the page is because too many people try to edit the page and put inaccurate information on there. If the celebrity is not liked, there will be derogatory changes made to the page. Many times these are very subtle, so that if you are reading the article, it may sound like factual information. Take a look at the edit history of a controversial celebrity, and you will see the kinds of misinformation that others would have you believe.

Filler - It seems like everyone is out to make a quick buck. Internet marketers have embraced a form of spam called auto blogging in which they will start up a blog in the hope of fooling the search engines into thinking they are legit. They will post almost incoherent articles filled with keywords designed to attract the right advertisements for unsuspecting users to click on. The rest of the site, including the layout and images, may look impressive or it might not, but either way you may find yourself reading content that doesn't make any sense.

Innocent False Information - Everyone claims to be an expert online. Some of these people have their opinions, and while they're not trying to pull one over on you, what they're saying isn't right. You should question any self-proclaimed expert you find online, and double check their claims for accuracy. The goal of most people online is to make money, and while they might not intentionally be trying to dupe you, the end result is the same.

It wouldn't be right to think that you can't get any sort of reliable advice or information online. The trick is to do a little extra research and digging to find the best there is. All information is not created equally. Locate the right sources and stay loyal to them.
