I have a customer who provides dog walking services as her business venture. It is actually a model that many people could follow if they also wanted to run their own business from home, however, there are a few considerations.

Doggy Day Care
Rather than just dog walking, maybe dress the idea up a little as "Doggy Day Care". Dog walking makes it sound as though the owner is lazy, whereas Day Care implies they are active and busy people. You are, after all, aiming your services at business people and those that are out all day.

Your audience
As I have said a main audience for you will be those people who are out all day and worried about the welfare of their canine friends. Those commuting for an hour or so each way and spending a full day in an office can be leaving their pets for a long time. They are also the people likely to have the disposable income to pay for your time.

Your offering
A dog owner that is out for 10 - 12 hours each day might just need someone to pop in most days and see that the dog is well. The visit does not need to be the exact same time each day and you can probably be flexible with how long you are there for. Maybe good long visits most days, but a shorter visit when needs must.

Even just going in to the house or flat and changing the pet's water, maybe allowing them out into the garden to relieve themselves and giving the dog a fuss and a bit of attention is probably all that the owner needs to ease their mind.

What to consider
Obviously, you are going to be letting yourself into strangers' houses whilst they are out and letting their best friend run free in the garden. You might prefer to walk the dog on a lead around the garden, just in case there's a gate open somewhere. Or a short walk around the block might be more enjoyable for you.

And it is very important to reassure the owner that you are trustworthy. Testimonials and references from other people saying you are trustworthy will go a long way and if you can get a copy of your CRB (or whatever your country uses to show that you are free from a criminal record) it might just reassure people.

Finding the work
Because of the level of trust it is probably well worth starting with friends of friends and so on. Spread the word through word of mouth rather than traditional advertising until you get going.

Those "gurus" have been marketing online for years, so it's nothing to make even a million per day when doing a launch. But small guy starting out is another thing.

You don't have the knowledge or resources. Most likely, you won't get any traffic for 3 to 6 months even if you work very hard. Usually in this scenario, you will just quit and get back to the reality.

But stop! Wait for a moment.

Instead of mildly taking this project and then quitting when you don't see results fast, why not go the other way around? Why not pick one niche that you know you'll love, have some passion about, and you know makes money for people day in day out.

Now we're talking.

Slowly build content on the website. Write articles. Do article marketing. Do SEO. Do paid traffic if it works. If not, you still have valuable content on your site. Don't let it go to waste. Build it, get traffic, get links. You'll see that it does take time, but what matters is your mindset.

Instead of thinking short term, you think long term. Now it doesn't seem such a bad idea not to get any traffic for 5 months or so. Because you know that sooner or later your efforts will pay off. So take things slowly and you'll see how things change.

Hints and Tips for Selling at Australian Craft Markets

I would have thought selling products at local markets was fairly straight forward. For our local markets at Eumundi & Mount Tamborine in QLD we packed a trestle table, table cloth, a tent and our product (in our case handcrafted Sock Monkeys). We soon found out that it's a little more complex than that and with some great advice from long time stall holders we are now going great guns. So here are some of the things we have learned along the way.

1. The wider the range of products the better- This allows for all budgets. So you can sell to the widest possible audience, there's a product and price for everyone. We only have a limited range at the moment but have plans to expand into hats, t-shirts, bags, bibs etc...

2. Ensure you have prices clearly visible. A lot of people are reserved and don't want to ask for the price, and many won't buy from a stall on principle if prices aren't shown. We were a new business and not sure on our pricing strategy, but feedback from customers and other stall holders was pricing was right for our product. They are unique, handmade so there is a cost associated with that. Of course not everyone will pay $40 -$60 for a Sock Monkey but we are comfortable that our prices reflect the workmanship, time and uniqueness of our product. Don't be apologetic about your price, be proud.

3. Ensure you have lots of stock on display. Your stall is a retail outlet, so dress that window! We only started with 10 Funky Monkeys on a table, we now have a huge banner, red/white & navy/white polka dot material drops (that match our brand) on each side and the back of the tent, bamboo poles hanging from the roof with monkeys climbing them, monkeys hanging off the banner and sides/front of tent, artificial ivy everywhere and props to sit the monkeys on for the table, this adds depth and dimension. We only have 6 different monkeys and 1 x DIY packs but the stall is loaded with about 60 monkeys and it looks like we have heaps and heaps of different styles.

4. Don't sit back and read a book!You are there to sell aren't you? We are constantly amazed at how many stall holders sit at the back of the stall and read a book. This isn't very inviting for customers. I'm not saying you have to jump on every person who looks sideways at your stall, but people buy from people, so stand up, be happy and engage people in conversation, 'are they local or on holidays? How long are you here for? it's crazy busy today, can you believe this rain? etc etc. It doesn't even have to be about your products. But of course if you get the chance, do tell them about your great products. Passion about your product in very infectious, people love to hear the story behind something they are buying.

"How long until I see results?" This is one of the most common questions asked by home business owners who are just starting out. This article is going to try to supply some meaningful answers to this question.

I have to be honest. Whenever somebody asks me this question, and it happens often, I am stuck somewhere between a smile and a sigh. A smile because it's asked so often and a sigh because the answer isn't what people want to hear. The truth is, there is absolutely no way to tell. And anybody who tries to guess is a fool at best and giving dangerous advice at worst.

Okay, but why is this question impossible to answer? That's where, hopefully, I'll be able to give you some answers that WILL be of use to you and WILL actually help you with your home business.

At the top of the list is your own ability to run a home business. Contrary to that saying (and I have no idea where it actually comes from) not all men are created equal. Some are smarter than others, some work harder than others, and, like it or not, some have more money to invest in their business than others. All of these factors are going to contribute to how quickly you'll see results.

Then we have the issue of the actual market you're tackling itself. Some markets are wide open and others are highly competitive. Some have a great demand and others have very little demand. Some have very little free info available and some have a ton of free info available. All of these factors are going to contribute to how quickly you'll see results, if at all. In a very competitive market, where you're going up against sites with seven figure a year advertising budgets, you'll be lucky to see a dime come in let alone a significant income.

And finally, there is something called being in the right place at the right time. Some markets will be viable one day and then, because of new technology or something else, are dead the next day. Think of all the products and services that have come and gone over the years. That's why you always have your best chance if you target a market that is evergreen. The downside to doing that is that there will probably be a lot of competition in that market.

So the answer to this question, "how long until I see results?" is simple. There is just no way of knowing given all the variables involved. Having said that, if you're not seeing at least some income come in within six months, you're probably not going to. That has been my experience.

And even that isn't written in stone.

Another thing you want to do is prioritize things if you have a large list. What you might want to do is assign priority numbers. For example, 1 for high priority and 5 for very low priority and then everything in between. Then, what you do is tackle all the 1's first and work your way down to the 5's. You'll end up making stupid mistakes and in the long run, those mistakes will cost you more time because you're going to have to redo your work. Trust me, I am speaking from experience. I can't tell you how many things I've had to totally redo from scratch.

Stress is a killer. NO question about it. How you deal with it will go a long way in determining how long you're going to survive on this insane rock.

Just Get It Done

When working from home it can become hard to keep to yourself up to speed with what you need to be doing but what I've found is that it's better to approach the work in terms of 'what needs to get done' instead of 'how long I have to get it done in'.

It is doubly hard when changing from a job where you were paid by the hour or following a 'regular' work-week schedule. This is because the inclination will be to spread the work out over the day so that you won't find yourself getting additional work. This mentality has to change when it comes to working from home and owning your own business.

The best method I've found is to make a list of things that need to be done daily for the up-keep of the business.

Once you have this list make the decision that no matter how long it takes you're going to get them done by the end of each day.

This means that if you want to slack off and watch TV that's fine but just know that before you close your eyes that night you've got to have finished all of the tasks otherwise no sleepy time for you!

This might seem 'harsh' but after a while it will become engrained in you because in the end you know that if you slack off that's money out of your own pocket.

Once you go into business for yourself there's no one to chastise you, there's no one to fire you, the only person you have to answer to is you.

If you're a failure then it's your fault but also remember when you succeed it's going to be you and take it from me that bubbly is going to taste twice as sweet because you'll know it was your dedication and determination that brought that beautiful gold bottle to your table.
