The Wi-Fi Printer in the Telecommuter Workspace

The growing phenomenon of attaining tighter corporate profitability by having certain employees work from their home offices has brought about the need for special equipment to communicate with the outside business world. Printing reports and other documents are necessary for many who must show up at meetings with all the charts, graphs, and reports so they need a high-quality printer at home that can do the job. Wireless printers are the most convenient and there are a range of models that potentially fit the bill. Inkjet printers are normally used for reasons of cost and environmental impact. Laser printers are twice as expensive to run.

The lower energy use of models like the HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless combined with higher-capacity ink cartridges add up to a greener solution. That particular printer gets a mileage of up to 1500 pages on a full tank, twice that of lower models. The Pro 8500 has an LCD touch screen, a 50-page capacity automatic document feeder, and a higher print speed of 34 pages per minute for color prints. You would be ready to splice this new gear into your environment of computers, fax machines, scanners, answering machines, TV and sound equipment. Make sure the wireless router is connected to the computer, turn on and test some prints. You are now ready to save your boss some money by not hanging around the printer at the office.

Like cars and guitars, the major competitors in the printer market have roughly the same technology developed at the same level and available in the same price range. You might joke that you'd steer away from a Toyota printer however (if there were one), out of fear that it might spit out copies without being able to stop. You might want to compare service departments by phoning a few to see how long you're kept on hold. There's a movement to buy locally, so a brand available closest geographically can be community-conscious and handy for service calls at the same time. Aesthetic appeal is probably a deciding factor in many sales.

The wireless account has to exist already to get your business printer set up - that is if you have any money left from your family's cell phone calls, your laptop hours, etc., so you should be a functioning taxpayer with some cash and the ability to deduct business expenses. Numbers can add up fast so it's a good idea to start out with a model that fits the financial requirements as well as the print quality. The psychology of working from home doesn't leave much room for frustration in your own cave, so it might be worth a few extra dollars to go for the highest quality possible. Inkjet is the way to go, and the model you should look at is the one with the biggest ink tank, as that will be the most cost efficient and environmentally-friendly. The colors won't be as sharp as a laser print on the paper but the balancing act looks to be in favor of lower operating cost.

How to Keep Your Home Office in Order

Working from home will teach you the centrality of being organized. Those who work from home fall into two categories. One type has a dedicated space where they go to work, an organized home office, and the other type just put their laptop anywhere and launch straight into it, no matter the space.

The thing is, those who have the dedicated home office space get more work done. This is particularly true if it is well set up. This is one of the keys to working from home successfully, and will be a great asset in the long run.

The basic necessities are a good desk and a suitable chair, these are non-negotiable. Let's face it, you will be using these two things all day, every day, and if they are sub-par then you will suffer the consequences.

Another thing that is important is to have everything you will need close to hand, like stationery, a hole punch, and a computer. Obviously, these will depend on what you do and what tasks you need to accomplish.

You should have a good labeling system so that you know what everything is. It doesn't take long to lose track of things if they are not easily identifiable.

Go out and get yourself some basic shelves or desk organizers and put everything in a sensible place. You may even want to knock it up a notch and alphabetize the desk!

Lastly, you need to know how to maximize your working day when you work at home. Getting distracted and being dragged away from your work are very easy things to happen when you work from home so be disciplined.

One way of doing this is by setting yourself specific time periods where you have to work and maintaining that schedule no matter what happens to distract you.

Home Based Business - Why Having a Make-Shift Office Gives a Make-Shift Outlook

If you are a serious home based business owner, whether that be on the Internet or running an offline business from home, you still need to have all the professional tools around you.

Before we start, I do know and understand that when you first start up in business you don't necessarily have the money to equip your new home office with all the fancy furniture and equipment right from the very start.

And if this is the case then yes, only get the bare minimum to get your going. But once you start to make a profit, then start re-investing your money back into your business.

However, the first thing you should 'reinvest' your money into is your promotion and marketing. Don't think that you need that new cool PC chair instead of investing in that ad that will get you new business.

You obviously have to prioritize your profits here, but what I am trying to get across is that you mightn't think that buying equipment and furniture for your home office is important at this stage.

Well let me tell you that it is. You see, in order to run a successful home based business, no matter what it is, you need to be 'organized' and in order to be organised you need to have 'systems' in place.

In order to have systems in place, you need furniture (filing cabinets), equipment (telephone, printer, fax), software (Word, Excel, Email) and office stationery in place to help you be organised.

But most importantly, you need a well-equipped office to let you know that you are serious about running your business in order to be successful.

A make-shift office results in make-shift business practices. A well-equipped and fully functioning office results in a fully functioning and profitable business!

Home Based Business - Your Home Office Essentials

You've decided to work from home, but now you've got the task of setting up an office area in your home. Here are a few essentials that you shouldn't miss out when setting up a home office.

Office Furniture:

You need to adequately equip your office out with comfortable and practical furniture. The first thing you must understand when working from home is that you need to separate your home and work life-balance and that starts with an adequately furnished room.

It's no good sitting on your sofa with your laptop with the TV on in the background. You are not setting your psyche up that you are now at work and not playing around with your PC!

Fair enough, your commute will now not be that 1 hour train journey and it's been replaced with that 1 minute kitchen to spare room/office journey, but you must get in the right frame of mind.

You need,

A separate room as an office
A desk and chair
Separate Phone Line
Some kind of filing cabinet
Noticeboard

Office Equipment:

PC/Laptop
Printer
Telephone
Diary (book or online software)

Don't forget that all of these expenses can be set off against your tax so please remember to keep all your receipts.

You may also have to decorate your new office but don't take this lightly. Choose your colors wisely, it's important. For example, try to avoid strong colors such as reds, blues and yellows and go for more tranquil and mood relaxing colors as gentle sage greens, light beige's and creams.

These are just the basics of setting up a home office, but the most important thing to remember is not to spend money you don't have. Keep buying new equipment as and when you need it and as and when you can afford it!

What You Need to Set Up a Home Office

Just because your office is home based does not mean you shouldn't take the time to set it up properly. Equipping your home office properly will save you time and you will be much more efficient when you start getting busy as a self employed person.

Basics of your home office

Desk ~ shop around and check different styles, sit at them in the store and picture yourself working at the desk and be realistic as to what will work best for you. Are there any drawers? How is the keyboard placement, is there room to spread out your work, where will you place your monitor, printer, speakers, calculator and telephone. How will it fit in the room you have designated for your office or work space?

Filing cabinet ~ how many drawers will there need to be? Are your files legal or letter size? Don't forget to take the measurements of your home office to ensure your filing cabinet will fit and be placed for easy access.

Storage cabinet ~ you will need a place to store paper, ink for printer, stationery, envelopes, spare pens, pencils, etc. This was one piece of furniture I neglected until my floor starting overflowing with all the bits and pieces of things I needed to operate my Virtual Assistant Business.

Book case ~ how many reference books do you have? You will want them to be easily accessible. I never have enough books so am constantly making space for new books I purchase. EBooks are so much easier and don't take up any space except on your computer. My problem is that I love real books so I can touch them and enjoy reading them while curled up in a chair or bed.

Computers ~ buy the best you can afford and consider what you will be using it for when choosing its capabilities. Don't scrimp on this because it will be the basis of your home business and your lifeline once you get started.

Monitors ~ have one as large as you can to make it easier to see - don't strain your eyes.

Chair ~ probably one of the most important items. Make sure it is comfortable for sitting for long periods of time.

Printer/fax/copier/scanner ~ do you need these to be separate items? Buy a printer that can take care of it all. I have a HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-one and just love it. The qualities of my photos are great, cartridges are easy to replace, the functions are easy to use and does not take up too much space. I also have a HP Laser 4L that I have had for years and it just won't quit. Personally I always research HP printers first before purchasing since I have had such good luck with them.

Calculator ~ I have a desk top calculator and find it handy to use. I can't take it with me and it needs electricity but has a tape if needed and it works for me. I also have a small battery calculator that I carry in my briefcase.

Shredder ~ with all of the scams and identity theft happening I can't stress enough how important it is to shred your confidential material. I don't throw away anything with my name or information on it without shredding it first.

Lamps ~ have good lighting on your desk to prevent eye strain. Be comfortable since you will be spending a lot of time in this environment being productive as a self employed business owner.

Miscellaneous ~ stapler, 3 hole punch, pen/pencil holder, scissors, ruler, tape recorder. I also have a paper cutter, laminator, pencil sharpener, radio, clock, telephone, notebooks and camera.

Software ~ I use MS Office since Word is my favourite word processor and most of my clients use it also. Have a good accounting software ~ my preference is QuickBooks but others are just as acceptable. Check with your accountant to see what he/she prefers.

Okay that's the basics ~ the rest is up to your own personal preference. Your home based office must be set up properly for you to work efficiently. Don't scrimp on the necessities since it will only waste time. Your office equipment could make the difference between being a successful home based business or not.
