Undoubtedly network marketing is a controversial profession. There are many myths, many exaggerations and varying opinions of the industry itself. This brief expose will hopefully shed some light amidst all the noise.
Lie #1 Network marketing is EASY!
Truth: Network marketing is simple, NOT easy. Take for example soccer, no one can deny that it is a simple concept- to win you need to kick the ball in the goal more than the other team. However it is definitely not EASY. Two teams can play for 90 minutes without either actually scoring a goal. This is where the distinction lies. People often promote their opportunity as being "easy". Consequently prospects develop an unrealistic perception of the effort and time it takes to actually succeed in this industry.
The truth is, in order to soar, become one of the top 2%, and earn a substantial income, it takes 1) entrepreneurial drive 2) unmovable mental strength and 3) belief. People who take their business seriously and take ACTION are the ones that will succeed.
Sadly most people are under the mistaken impression that they will earn money simply by joining a company and sitting on their hands. They become comfortable doing nothing, expect their up line to do the hard work and then complain when they don't earn any income.
Lie #2 Network marketing companies are all pyramids and scams!
Truth: The majority of network marketing companies are legitimate. However a stigma has attached to the industry most likely because of lie #1. 97% of people fail to make any profit with their company and once they drop out, they label the opportunity a 'scam'. Of course it's more convenient for people to blame the company and call it a pyramid rather than to criticize their individual efforts.
There will however always be a percentage of companies that are in fact illegal. So to protect you from getting tangled in anything messy here's a quick run down of the characteristics of of a pyramid:
1. Pyramids are illegal
2. You can spot a pyramid when the product price is not similar to the market value
3. In a pyramid, you can never earn more than the person above you
4. You generally need to spend a LOT of money to buy into a 'pyramid scheme' (this is generally speaking but is not always true)
5. Income is earned only from recruiting people into the business and there is no actual movement of product volume.
Lie #3: Old School methods are the only way to promote your opportunity
Truth: Today there is actually no need to run around hassling and chasing your family, friends and acquaintances to join the your 'hot and amazing opportunity'. Handing out fliers, business cards, magazines and CDs is just clunky and not effective. This is because the people you are handing them out to are not a targeted audience. The truth is you are wasting a lot of time, money, effort and, most importantly, self esteem as you grind away and try to sell your opportunity to people who were never interested to begin with.
New School marketing methods which utilise the power of the internet are, simply put, the way of the future. If you learn how to create reverse funnel systems and understand the concept of attraction marketing (where you brand yourself as a leader and mentor), you will have people contacting YOU to join your opportunity. By learning how to market your opportunity using the internet, you will be able to access a truly global audience and generate unlimited, targeted leads for your opportunity. Of course this takes a lot of hard work, but once you set up your business, it is possible to let it run on autopilot and generate a true residual income.
Online marketing is by no means easy, but if you look at it from the perspective of getting a degree for the 'new economy' and think about all the time you spent in your first apprenticeship, or your first degree then you can appreciate the time and effort that is required to invest in this new skill. The only difference is that this time you are in control of the outcome and the potential for true financial independence and freedom is completely possible.
Lie #4 The top income earners in your company experience success solely from the company's marketing 'system'
Truth: the problem with most network marketing companies is that most do not possess a simple, duplicable system that everyone can use. Most are still using the same marketing methods from the 50s and continue to perpetuate the myth that this is the BEST method out there. The worst thing is, is that most of the top income earners are also helping to maintain this perception when they get up on stage and claim that they achieved their success from following the 'system'. The secret is that the top 1-2% of income earners are actually plugged into the new school methods of personal branding and internet marketing. They are utilizing the power of the internet and building an immense downline, but are keeping you in the dark. If you're wondering why you're not actually experiencing the same success as those on top, it's because they're not actually telling you know what they're really doing.
The truth about network marketing is that it really does come down to you. Success in the mlm industry has its roots in entrepreneurship. This is even more so now, given the era of internet businesses and marketing. If you follow the true formula for generating quality targeted leads and personally branding yourself as a worthwhile leader to follow, then it is without a doubt that the relational equity you put in will translate to a successful monetary outcome.
