Discipline Is Important When Working Online From Home

So you have left the job market behind and are working from home for yourself. What challenges have you found? My guess is the biggest problem will be self-discipline.

I have been working online from home for over a year and still struggle to control my time on occasions. It would seem likely that most people working online from home would find the same to a greater or lesser degree.

One of the biggest challenges has been getting enough sleep. It can be so tempting to work late (I have even worked all night on one occasion) and I find to sleep properly I need to relax for a couple of hours before bed in order to get enough quality sleep. It is best to avoid eating too late or even watching television (which seems to stimulate the brain too much).

Is there a good routine before bedtime? I have no doubt this will vary according to the individual, but I find a hot bath really helps, as does reading a good book for perhaps half an hour. If I can, I also sit quietly for a while listening to soothing music and perhaps think about where I want my life to be going.

Actually I find music beneficial in several ways, one of which involves listening to the same piece of relaxing music every night as I get into bed. This seems to condition the mind for sleep.

For the record, the piece of music I use before bed is 'The Swan Of Tuonela' by Jean Sibelius and I had a dramatic demonstration of the power of this technique recently. I deliberately chose this music partly as I rarely hear it being played elsewhere but I the other day I was washing up when it came on the radio. My eyes started to feel heavy and I had to turn it off before I fell asleep over the sink!

Get it wrong at night and your ability to get up in the morning can also be compromised. My intention when I started working online from home was to avoid using alarm clocks. I know I usually sleep eight hours if left to my own devices so I can usually predict what time I get up. This means that, if I get to bed correctly and at the right time the night before, I will arise at the right time in the morning.

Of course things do not always go smoothly. This is especially true in the winter when the mornings are dark and cold and the bed seems extra cosy. Obviously a radio alarm is slightly preferable to an outright alarm clock so I set this to wake me up when I start to slacken. Interestingly I have also started to use an alarm clock to go off when I need to stop work in the evening so I can set my habits.

This system seems to work quite well and I hope before long I will automatically stop work at the right time and arise when I should without the use of any sort of alarm.

In addition to all this, I have put in place a morning routine. One of the other problems of working online from home is the lack of exercise. For this reason I have developed a set of exercises for when I get up, followed by a thirty minute cycle ride (and I hope to extend this eventually). On my return I have breakfast and set about working online from home.

Perhaps you will not be surprised to hear that getting enough work completed in a day can be a challenge, especially if there are many distractions (and there are!). At the end of each day during my quiet time I sit down and spend a few minutes to decide what I want to achieve the following day. I will know what is the next project so I start the list with that.

You will learn what is realistic to complete in a day but there will always be days when you do not quite finish what you intended so you simply carry over the incomplete work to the top of the next day's list. You will soon know when you have done enough in a day.

It is very tempting to be your own harsh boss and this can be very useful but, on the other hand, punishing yourself unnecessarily is pointless. Concentrate instead on what you have achieved and celebrate progress made (perhaps reward yourself).

Always ensure you also schedule some rest periods during the day. This will actually improve your enjoyment and so your productivity. Apart from anything else, sitting in front of a computer screen for long periods is not healthy so perhaps take a few minutes every hour to relax or do something else. You also want to take maybe an hour for lunch.

Being aware of what works for you will help you get going in the morning and will give you satisfaction in working online from home. You will also become more productive as you will start to see where you are heading and your progress towards that goal.

It can be very depressing to feel you are not going anywhere and you do not have control of your work so gaining control of every day means you will feel more motivated, satisfied and secure.

The Need to Develop Excellent Habits

Do anything consistently over a period of time, and good or bad, it becomes a habit. One of the keys to making money online is developing excellent daily habits. These habits are practices which are critical to success, and you must incorporate them in your daily routine.

A. Minimize the Amount of Time You Check and Respond to Email
There are only so many hours in a day, and even fewer hours in which you can be productive. Most people check email countless times during the course of a day, and will take time to reply to emails individually. Break this habit quickly. It is a time consuming nightmare, and it will distract your focus if you let it. The excellent habit you want to develop is to check and respond to emails twice a day, in the morning and afternoon. It may be difficult at first, but once you've developed the habit, you'll be amazed as to the time you've saved. Making money online is the goal, and to do so you need to be focused on those activities which will drive your business.

B. Create a Short List of Revenue Driving Tasks
It is a common trap to allow yourself to be distracted throughout the day with situations which do not involve making money. Develop the habit of making a short list of crucial revenue driving tasks which you complete one at a time until finished. Being "busy" does not necessarily mean being "productive." The old adage "how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time" is a habit you must develop and perform each day. Again, distractions are time killers and hinder your ability to complete that which needs to get done.

C. Call Your Opt Ins Twice a Day
Making money online means talking to people potentially interested in your business. Without this habit achieving success will be difficult if not impossible. Don't fall for the belief system of "automated" systems or signups. People buy from people they feel comfortable with, and the need for personal contact is the only way to consistently make money online. I'd suggest calling your opt ins in the morning and afternoon, the same time you check email.

D. Initiate and Track Your Daily Advertising the Same Time Each Morning
Advertising and marketing are the fuel which drives your business. Whether you're using AdWords, article submissions, phone prospecting, or email blasts, develop the habit of initiating and tracking your advertising the same time each morning. Making money online requires excellent habits and minimizing distractions. If you find yourself losing focus, simply ask yourself, "Is what I'm doing right now an activity which is geared to making a sale?" If you find yourself often answering NO, it's time to reassess your daily habits and make the necessary adjustments. Strive for excellence and you will seldom be disappointed!

Working Your Business From Home - Attention Focused, Distraction Avoided, Results Accomplished!

Americans are plagued by ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) in growing numbers. Whether this is because diagnostics can now measure the problem or for some environmental reason, no one knows. The subject of ADD is well covered.

This article will address AFDA -Attention Focus, Distraction Avoided-the talent entrepreneurs apply skillfully when working their business from home to accomplish optimal results.

Working from home requires discipline. Discipline gets you up in the morning, sitting at your computer before most people finish their morning commute. That's a benefit of working from home but it doesn't make working from home necessarily easier. There are so many other distractions. TV viewing may be down per recent studies, but phones and laptops have replaced those screens.

Accentuate the positive. Focus on building the skills that work: Attention Focus, Distraction Avoided (AFDA) is the way to do it. Here's how:

Follow A Schedule: Email arrives constantly. Don't check it every 15 minutes. Go through it once in the morning and, once again, later in the day. Limit yourself to a reasonable viewing time, 30 minutes, for example. Get rid of old emails clogging your inbox. You know you're never going to respond to them anyway. Unsubscribe to newsletters you don't care about. Set your various devices not to notify you when mail arrives; it is too much of a distraction.

Stay On Task: Using multiple windows can be a beautiful thing if you don't get waylaid. Do you really need to tweet every 20 minutes? There are apps for that. If you read internet news sites, do it within a scheduled time, again, perhaps 30 minutes. If you consciously limit distractions, your attention will stay focused on the job before you. The quality will be improved as well.

Ignore the Phone: You don't need to take that call from your neighbor. If your cell phone has the capability, set it to accept calls from only certain folks, such as your kids or someone else of importance related to your business.

Whenever you make a call, leave your name, phone number and a brief message. When the call is returned, this encourages the caller to respond to your message without just leaving their name and number again.

Telephone tag is the bane of existence in the 21st century. With a little retraining, we can use voicemail to be responsive to simple inquiries and save time. There is plenty of time for human contact later, in person. Speaking of which...

Human Contact: When you are involved in a personal meeting, turn off everything else. Making eye contact is the surest way to connect with an individual and make that person feel valued. Your interest and dedication to that individual can provide tremendous dividends for your business.

Attention Focus, Distraction Avoided (AFDA) is a new, positive acronym. It is de rigueur for the entrepreneur working business from home. Results accomplished: improved focus, less stress, better personal engagement.

Life is good.

Tutoring to Make Money

Whether you are considering a big career change or just brainstorming about new ways to make some extra cash, consider tutoring to make money. Tutoring provides you with all the benefits and flexibility of being your own boss, and as the icing on the cake you will enjoy your work and feel satisfied from helping someone else.

Tutoring makes good money. You should start out at a minimum of $20 per hour. Don't set your prices too low because it cheapens the value of your service. Whether you tutor online or in person, you can easily make $40 to $70 per hour. Remember that when you work for a tutoring company, they will tack some fees onto your asking price, making your client's price higher, so you will have to exercise some good judgment when setting your rates.

During the summer months, when many students want to put the books away and go on vacation, there are students who would like to brush up on their skills before the next school year starts. Because many parents work during the summer, they are eager to enroll their children in summer camps. Consider taking advantage of this by running your own summer day camp. Whether you are a math tutor or a music tutor, you could continue to make money throughout the summer months when your regular students are on holiday.

Summer day camps work well when they are structured so that the students brush up on skills in the morning, and then some type of activity is planned for the afternoon. For example, in a math camp, you could do worksheets in the morning, watch a short video about a math principle, and then break for lunch. The students will each bring their own lunches every day, to cut down on your expenses and also to make sure there are no allergy problems. Then, in the afternoon you could take the kids swimming or to a park. While there, have them look for things that are math-related, such as calculating the perimeter of the pool, the volume of water, or the motion of a swing. Upon arriving home, you can talk about what they noticed. Round out the day with some games that are based on math, and make sure to send their worksheets home with them so their parents can see what they accomplished.

If you scheduled your day camps from 9:00am until 4:00pm, with an hour break for lunch, then you would have a 3-hour morning session and a 3-hour afternoon session to fill. If you charged your students $150 per week, and you had just 4 students, you would be earning $600 per week. You could run camps for several weeks during the summer, giving yourself some time off here and there for your own vacation and to recoup for the next day camp.

How to Work From Home - Part One

I have been self employed for most of my working life. I've set up and run lots of small business from computer cleaning to painting and decorating through to italian marble plastering and property development. I like to "call the shots". There's nothing like the feeling of successfully working for yourself but I have to say, they haven't all been successes. I've struggled with all of the businesses I have owned, mainly due to lack of cashflow.

I enjoy working from home and avoiding the traffic and travel that comes with "tick-tock" jobs and routines. In this two part article, I'd like to tell you a little bit about my latest adventure in working from home.

Back in 2007 I was chatting to a friend on the telephone and we were discussing our current situations. I was struggling to make money with my internet business and he was struggling to meet the huge loan payments on his shop and was having problems with staff. We concluded that we could help each other. I would go work for him as the shop manager which would relieve some of his staffing problems and run the general shop business and allow him to develop new niche markets, propel the business forward and generate more cashflow to allow him to reduce the loan burden.

I opened the shop at 8.30 in the morning, closed it at 5.30 in the evening, worked six days a week and never took a lunch break. Of course, I realised that I was spending all of my time helping someone else to develop their business instead of my own, but I reasoned that they had the money to do this and I did not. So I told myself, "head down and get on with it!". This worked well for a couple of years, although I lost all focus on my internet business for a time, I was keeping my families heads just above water.

At this point I was undergoing a complete relationship breakdown with my long term girlfriend and when I finally met my current girlfriend I started to realise that the "work-slog" routine was driving me insane. I had to get back to working for myself. Developing my own future and building something tangible for my kids.

I decided to move out of London, cut my working week at the shop to just three days and spend the rest of the week developing my own business from home and spend more time enjoying life with my new woman. The move took a bit out of me. At nearly forty years old maybe I'd bitten off more than I could chew! I had a six hundred mile round trip to work now. My plan was to travel to London early Thursday morning and go straight into work. I'd work through to Saturday and travel home either Saturday evening or Sunday morning.

The first Thursday morning that I arose to leave on a fateful journey should have been warning enough. As I dressed at 3am the snowfall was heavy and the grey ledden skies looked ominous. However, I had commitments. A job to do. Money to earn. So I set off in the car that I had just purchased to get me to work and back safely.

The first hour and half of that journey was hard going. The snow and ice had settled on all the major roads and there wasn't much traffic around until I hit the motorway. Then it got worse! The traffic thickened and the snow fell thicker. The roads became treacherous. I considered abandoning my journey several times but couldn't stand the thought of letting people down. Especially friends. So I ploughed on carefully.

I approached a dip in the motorway which tends to retain rainwater and spotted an accident up ahead in the distance. I figured the water had turned to ice and just as I slowed to avoid problems ahead the huge truck to my left swerved into my lane right in front of me. I couldn't break because I was now on sheet ice so I took the only action left to me and swerved into the outside lane, the fast lane. As I did so, my car started to slide and I battled to control it. I just couldn't keep it in a straight line. In slow motion I slid towards the metal bars of the central reservation. I seemed to slip into a dream world as I realised I was in serious trouble.

I hit the "real world" with a bang as the front end of the car smashed into the railings and spun me round in a complete circle. As I looked up another truck sped past my windscreen missing me by no more than an inch or two. The car spun again and rammed the central reservation for a second time. I felt like a spinning top. As the car came to a rest in the center of the motorway I realised that I had been lucky to survive but that something was telling me I was out of line with life's flow. I resolved immediately to correct my path.

I'd had a very lucky escape. The whole of the front of my new car was squashed up to the bulkhead where my feet had been seconds earlier. There were no wheels left on the front of the car. It was a complete write-off and I no longer had a car to take me on the six hundred mile round trip. yet the only injury I received was a slightly damaged knee where I'd banged it during the collision. I phoned my friend and told him my plan to run the shop for three days a week was unattainable and I wouldn't be returning to London.

I decided to take the opportunity that I had presented myself with and throw myself into working from home on the things I enjoyed most of all... internet marketing and web development. Working from home also meant that I could spend quality time with my girlfriend and enjoy not having to battle in the traffic of "job land".

I'd been constantly involved with web design and internet marketing since I first became an affiliate for CD-Now and Amazon back in 1995/96. I had spent a few years as a web designer, designing sites for Disney and the Reed Publishing empire before concentrating my efforts on digital product creation. I wrote and sold my first ebook, sold products on ebay and guided my thirteen year old son to become a Powerseller before I discovered the potential of subscription/membership websites where my current interests lie.

Like just about everyone that gets involved with internet marketing I have purchased every system, method and blueprint to hit the market. Lots of marketers will tell you that this is a bad idea and stop wasting your money. Personally, I think its a great education. You really should buy a few courses, ebooks and memberships so that you can get to know the market. You'll also get a good education in what makes a good, valuable product. And what makes a crap one.

I believe you'll only get to know your market by trying out a few products. Believe me when I tell you that there really is some poor quality stuff out there. Hidden amongst them, there's some real gems that will educate you and give you ideas for great products.

There are many options open to you when you consider establishing an online business. Affiliate marketing offers one of the easiest routes to start earning money. You could also look at trading on ebay or amazon or writing your own ebooks and reports. If you're not interested in writing your own stuff you could outsource the work or purchase resell rights.

I have developed several products by purchasing private label rights to various products and then reassembling these into a membership site. Personally, I love to membership/subscription site model. After the car crash, when I decided that my future lay in developing my online business, I resolved to become an expert in membership site design, structure and marketing and in the next part of this article I'm going to give you some tips on working from home on the internet and why I think subscription sites are a brilliant business model.

To your success!

Key Element For Home-Based Business Success

"I can work in my pajamas all day if I want."

WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!

This is often a pitch people use when they are selling a home-based opportunity. Does that give you energy, drive or enthusiasm? I think not. After all, you've spent the last eight hours in your pajamas - would you want to make it 16?

If you have a home business or your company allows you to do work at home through the means of technology, don't fall into the trap of "I can work all day in my pajamas if I want." Does that make you feel great and successful? Not me! I would want to feel on top of my game at all times regardless if I worked for myself in my own business or if my company allowed me to work at home.

Before you get out of bed in the morning, give gratitude for all the wonderful things you have in your life. This could take awhile because we all have many things to be grateful for. And when you get in the habit of doing this, they will increase, just as the abundance in your life will.

The first thing you must do every morning is make yourself presentable to the world. Get in the shower, and if you're a gal, put your makeup on and put on the clothes that make you feel great. If you're a guy, do the same, except you will shave instead - no makeup for you, my dear! You will be amazed at the difference this will make. Your energy level will soar. Your self esteem (and this is really important) will soar, and you will get the attitude that you can conquer anything.

I'm not talking about "suit and tie" stuff here. I'm talking about shirts, sweaters, blouses, polo shirts, jeans, khakis, nice slacks, etc. - anything that makes you feel attractive and comfortable. This also gets rid of your procrastination to delay a necessary errand. Now you can grab your keys, and out the door you go.

Another very important item to start your day off in the very best way is a good breakfast full of good nutritional stuff. This is your fuel. I don't think you'd expect your car to operate well if there wasn't any gas in the tank! You can do this before you get dressed for the day if that works better for you.

Of course it will take you only a couple of minutes to get to your office - great benefit - but you will then walk in like a business person ready for the day.

To your success,

Swanie Brandt
