To Make Money at Home Online, Is It "Do One Thing" or "Many Things"?

We all know that there is huge growth in those who want to make money at home online, and we have gone through the reasons for that in previous articles. But, for many, the question is - do I do one thing to generate income, or do I try many things? Like a lot of such debates, there is no absolute right or wrong, but for the purposes of this article let me put forward the argument for developing a number of streams of income. Let me be upfront with my own personal bias - I am in favour of developing more than one income flow! I actually do it! So, now that I have got that out of the way, let me expand on my theory.

Chunking your portfolio. What does this mean? Well, it refers to what Charles Handy wrote about many years ago. For those who have not come across Charles Handy before, look him up and buy some of his books to read - he is a real treasure! The principle he expounds is that the concept of just doing one thing that generates your only source of income is a seriously flawed one. He expounds the virtue of having a number of irons in your portfolio fire. If you read any of his material I think he makes a compelling argument.

Spread your risk. When you are investing for your retirement, you do not invest all your money into one type of investment. You would not invest everything in shares, for example, you would spread your investments over a number of different areas. So, why would you do it differently for your income?

Your skills are transferable. The skills you have enable you to work in different areas. For example, if you are highly skilled at writing, then you could make money at home online by writing and monetizing your own blog, you could hire yourself out as an article writer to others, you could write your own e-book, you could ghost write for someone else, you could write copy for your own or other's websites.

Broadens your expertise and value. The more you stretch yourself outside of the single narrow niche, the more you will grow your skills and knowledge accordingly. The more you do that, the more value you can add to others. You become a much more valuable resource.

More fun. Diversity is much more fun! That's a fact. The way to keep yourself fresh and vibrant is to be involved in many different things in your life. The more vibrant you are, the more creative you will be and the more creative you are, then the more productive you will be!

These are my key reasons for diversification. I know that many will say that going this route will cause you to lose focus and I understand the point that is being made. But, I would argue there is a difference between being diversified and being scattered! Diversification is a clearly outlined strategy to deliver on a number of key projects or streams of income. Being scattered is simply jumping from one thing to another without completing anything. My argument is that being diversified requires discipline and planning in order to be successful at it, and so does working on a single source of income. I would argue that I have come across many people who only work on one source of income and I would describe them as scattered. So, that is not a strong enough argument against diversification. We are also all multi skilled - remember the old adage "I can walk and chew gum at the same time"!

What do I want you to do? Do an exercise on a blank sheet of paper that brainstorms all the areas of work where you would have the possibility to make money at home online. Then pick a few - say 3 or 4 - and start doing research into how you could convert those into other income streams. Do not pre judge or set obstacles in the way as you build up this list and research - just do it!!

4 Income Streams Give You a Potential 75% Guaranteed Income When It Goes Bad

Every business knows its ups and downs, conjuncture and other outside factors influence buying behaviour of people in general. Spreading the risk is a well known and well executed strategy of many successful entrepreneurs. If you want to become one of them, you'll have to learn how to do it.

Spreading the risk

A silly example is being an ice cream vendor - 4 seasons in a year, all with their different pros and cons.

25% spring
25% summer
25% autumn
25% winter (goes up to 75% if you live in Europe hehe)

It's not a truthful representation of how much they sell in summer or winter, but it's just to prove a point.

If you're one of the less advanced entrepreneurs and you want to make quick summer money, you will focus on having a small shop on a beach or a cart in the street. The sun shines and many tourists are attracted to your stall. Amazing season!

The next year however, there's a lot of rain and people stay away from the coast, a massive drop in income struck you and you fall back to only 25%.

Summary: You focussed 100% of your business on one season. One bad season strikes you and you lose 75% of your income. The struggle will start to overcome the other three months now.

If you're a smart entrepreneur, the ones I try to convince with my consulting services, you will spread the risk and find other sources of income. In the case of the ice cream venter, think of where you can sell your creamy paste when the sun is not shining.

Fill in the three blank seasons, for example:

Spring: Organise cooking classes and teach people how to make their own artisanal ice cream.
Autumn: Try and sell high quantities of your product to hotels and restaurants
Winter: Experiment with hot and cold, sell your ice cream together with a hot Belgian Waffle!

Now you're covering the whole year and one bad season potentially only affects 25% of your income. Your 75% drop of income in the summer now only affects you for about 18% of your yearly income.

Spreading the risk also gives you new experimental breathing space

By spreading the financial risk of your business, you open up new perspectives. If you're only risking 25% of your income, you may start to give it a try to start something new. In the case of the vendor, why not experiment with a new range of non conventional tastes, basilicum ice cream for example!?

It's possible you're tired of your business location. When you've spread the risk, you can find a new spot and test it properly. Should you fail, you can still go back to the roots, but you had a chance for trying.

I'm not an ice cream vendor I'm an online entrepreneur

I know I know. If you're really an entrepreneur, you should get the picture and render this article for your specific case. If you're only generating content, it's a smart idea to find alternative "products" to supplement it.

When I had my military aviation website, my main income was from AdSense. Imaging getting banned for some reason, what do you do?

I spread the risk and started selling my own posters, t-shirts, mouse pads, flight simulator hardware, pilot gloves and suits. I was able to generate at least 6 sources of income and I opened up the option to experiment with ads.

Making Money Online - The Right Steps to Success

As some of you might already know, trying to make money online can be very difficult. There are so many ways to do it. The problem is that anyone starting out more than likely don't have a lick of knowledge of where to start and more importantly how. Even people who have been in this industry for a couple of years still don't know where to start or how.

Here comes the good news, forget everything you thought you knew and pay attention. Anyone can make money online. In fact, once you know how to it is ridiculously easy. Here are a few tips for you and should push you in the right direction.

1. Right down on a piece of paper, "I can, I will." This is very powerful. Whenever you have doubt and feel like this can't or will not work look at what you wrote. Anything worth having is worth fighting for. In this case it's money and more freedom. Also, remember that everyone has doubts. In fact for the first year I had nothing but doubts. It can, and it will change.

2. Research everything you can get your hands on. I try to learn something new every week. That's it just one thing a week. Once you learn it implement it. I don't recommend at first buying everything out there that claims it will help you. Instead, Google it or watch videos about it. Trust me it is out there some where. The more you know the more you become a leader and people only join leaders.

3. Learn how to talk to people. For some reason when people talk to me about their business opportunity they seem to just pitch me over and over again. The problem with that is no one likes to be pitched. So the right way is to connect with people and simply provide information. For example, the next time you talk to someone ask a lot of questions about them and then ask what they do for a living. Once they go on and tell you simply ask them if they would be interested in joining a side project that wouldn't interfere with what they are currently doing?

4. Become the leader. Always offer your help and always provide really valuable information to your prospects and most importantly to your team. This is very important. If people feel like you don't care about you then they will leave and search for someone who will guide them and comfort them as well.

Well, that's it guys. The rest is up to you. Remember, if you do nothing you get nothing. Also remember that people join people, NOT business opportunities.

If you would like more information on building a list, or get laser targeted leads then feel free to check my free video over at http://www.limitlessleadsforlife.com/ This video can be for beginners or even experts. It does not matter. It will however, show you some cool ways to earn some [http://teamincome.limitlessleadsforlife.com/]extra cash.

My Personal Mistakes On My Business Ventures Part 2 of 3

I found out that the Candy Business was not for me to the dismay of my partner. I did learn how to package a product and how to design pans to cook the fudge in so it will fit in the packaging etc. So here is a little more knowledge added to my experience with Business. In looking back if I could have done it over I would have pulled in another person experienced in marketing to be a partner with and do all the selling. Point being to stay in your field of expertise and allow others to do what they are good at. This also tends to spread the risk a little better too. Having part of a pie is better than no pie at all.

But having a Venture spirit does not seem to go away no matter how many times you fail. As we say, that just puts us a little closer to success on the next one. I heard a survey that talked to millionaires and most of them said that they went through 10 to 15 Businesses before the found the one that they liked, were good at and became successful at. Everyone has their limit of getting to the point of quitting, but I was not there yet and I hope I never will. I try to keep the attitude that even though this learning was expensive the cost of ignorance is much higher and will keep you much lower.

Then of course as we all have done sooner or later is having a friend who does multilevel Marketing. My friend told me about a Business that helps others to start a Corporation so they can get the tax advantages of the tax system that favors Businesses. So as a matter of law you do need to have a product or service of some sort.

Just to let you know I tried a car wash that did not need water, a multiple product company that started with soap/bath products and others that I do not even remember. I did not want to stop until I found something that worked and gave me income instead of me buying things. Now I cannot say that all of these were bad but some people like me, have a hard time making money at it.

Now back to the Corporation Business. This seemed like a good idea (as they all do) as I believed that having a Business is one of the best ways to make money if you succeed. And later if you do succeed and in five years you decide you do not want to work that hard anymore, then you can always sell it and retire or only work part-time to keep busy.

I do admit I probably learned more from this business about Corporations than any other. They also sold follow-up products to support your Business like Voice Mail, Accounting (bookkeeping), Seminars to teach how we are getting taxed so much and to bring in others into the Business, Setting up your Corporation and Corporate books services and the like. I did like doing the public speaking and teaching part of the seminars.

What happened was they started giving stock options and the Business was growing so I thought it would be a good idea to get as much stocks as I could get as they said they wanted to go public in the near future. So here I go again on borrowing money to buy Stock Options as I earned them by getting other people to start a Corporation and also be able to get Stock Options. As you brought money into the Company you were given the option to buy Stock Options to buy stocks later. Sound Complicated? Anyway in the Corporate world it is illegal to sell stock options before you go public as least that is what I was told.

Please understand I cannot give any legal advice as I am not an Attorney. So I bought a Corporation and enjoyed some tax benefits and received some money for helping others to do the same. They advised to quit-claim your home, your car etc. into your Corporation and you receive use of these things as the CEO of your Business and you become the Manager of the home. Then you were supposed to be able to deduct the expenses of the now Business Real Estate. Now a lot of these methods are used by the rich and should be setup by professionals.

I am a man that has looked for a business for many years to become successful at and after many tries I have found Internet Marketing. It does not take much money and at 56, being Internet challenged, I can learn this, work at home and quit my jobs. Remaking myself to try to improve me is a ongoing affair, with learning a new challenge comes a better me. Marketing other businesses products and creating a self running system seems ideal to me. Working for someone else is no way to become financially independent or to develop yourself into someone new. Moms Who Work From Home Are Amazing

Whenever my life gets crazy, I try to remember how luck I am to be a mom working from home. Lots of moms want this but can't get it. Sure it's exhausting at times, frustrating many times, and not many people realize just how much work it all is unless they've done it themselves.

So I like to say moms who work from home are amazing for many good reasons.

1. They take chances.

Working at home is almost always a gamble. It doesn't matter if you have a work at home job, telecommute or have started a business. It's a risk.

Finding a legitimate way to earn money from home is a risk, whether it's through finding a work at home job or starting a business. Telecommuting from a job you had before is a risk, as you're less visible than if you worked in the office. You don't know how things are going to go or if working at home will really work out for you on a personal level. It's a huge change from working outside the home.

2. They combine child care with earning a living.

All moms work hard on raising their families, but working at home means you're working where you live, and the kids are often right there. Not always, certainly, as they may go to school or you may even have them in daycare some of the time so you can be productive.

Many work at home moms have the children home with them all day, yet still manage to hold down their job or run their business. It's adding your work hours onto the more than full time work of being a stay at home mom, and it's challenging. It means a lot of late nights or early mornings to get something done while everyone else is sleeping. It's figuring out how to distract the kids so you can work a while and making the most of nap time when they're young enough for that.

But it's also showing your children that you can be home with your kids and earn a living, or try to. It's coping with the difficult times when the work just isn't there or business has gone down, and showing your kids that you don't give up.

Most of us don't pretend that it's easy every day because even when we enjoy the time with our families and enjoy the work, sometimes it all piles up and there's no time for the fun stuff. Yet it's still not worth trading for an outside the home job.

3. They're showing working at home is real work.

For a long time, many people have considered working at home to be less than professional. It was something you did when the kids didn't need you, more of a hobby than anything serious. Now moms such as Heather Armstrong from Dooce and Ree Drummond, the Pioneer Woman, have shown that a serious, respectable business can be run from home. Less visible but frankly more important are the many moms running other kinds of businesses from home successfully and professionally.

Even more open minded managers are recognizing that moms can work from home, often more productively than at the office. It doesn't work for all jobs, and many can only be partial telecommute, but it has been shown that telecommuting can be a valuable way to keep employees happy and productive.

There's still a ways to go in many areas, as many people don't realize how professional a home based mother can be, but the situation has improved from what it was in years past.

I Recovered My WordPress Site From An Internal Server Error, I Thought I Had Lost It All

The other day, while I was working on my KodeeXII.Net blog, I suffered quite a scare. As I was working in the Admin section of the blog, I suddenly received a surprising response from the server.

I received the dreaded "Internal Server Error" message. I tried every other URL I can think of on this site. They all produced the same error message. I just could not get into my site and also the back end admin site. All I'm getting is the following:

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster[at]mydomain.name.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log....

I was worried. Have I just lost everything on the site?

The first thing I did after that was to go check on my backups. Can you imagine just what I discovered?

I found out that my backups have stopped running since June last year! I have been running without backups for at least half a year!

I was under the assumption that I've got my WordPress Automated Backup running. I've slacked and have never checked my backup email since.. I don't even know when was the last time I checked on my backups.

Since I can't rely on my automated backup, which was not running for some unknown reason. I had to make sure that I don't really need the backup.

I removed all my plugins. Still cannot access the website. I removed all my themes. Same result. What else is there to check besides going down into the database?

I then checked the.htaccess file. I saw that the .htaccess file has got two WordPress configuration entries. So, I removed one of them and saved the file. Tried to access the site again, and.. Voila! Everything is back to normal. Phewww!

Following is the default WordPress htaccess. This is normally autogenerated for you when you define your site's custom perma link settings. So if yours look different or don't have any and everything is working just fine then you are okay.

# BEGIN WordPress
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}!-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}!-d
RewriteRule. /index.php [L]
# END WordPress

Now, my first task is to perform a complete backup of this site. Then I will have to reconfigure my Automated Backup.

I still find it strange though. Why did the system actually fail? Was it really caused by the duplicate WordPress entries in the.htaccess file? If so, how did the duplicate entry came about in the file? If I remembered correctly, everything was fine. I was working on the Post area of the Admin.

Should I try to recreate the problem? Perhaps, but certainly not now.

So, my question to you now is.. Have you got a backup system in place for your website? It doesn't matter if the site is for personal or business. If you value the work and data you have put into your site, I recommend that you configure a backup system for your site.

3 Work-At-Home Guidelines Guaranteed to Increase Productivity and Sanity

Working at home can be great. If you have the space, the time and the privacy, the home environment can be the ideal workplace. You can't beat the commute. You have your own kitchen and bathroom. You determine the dress code, the hours and the breaks.

Notice how many of those last few sentences started with the word, you? That's right, when it comes to working at home, it all becomes about you. More importantly, it all becomes about how disciplined you are working in the kind of environment where you make all the rules. Even the best disciplined among us can fall into some of the work-at-home traps that end productivity and stifle creativity.

Here's 3 guidelines that consistently work for me.

The TV Is Your Enemy

Let's get this one out of the way first and foremost. Trying to do meaningful work with a TV on at the same time is just not a good idea. Now, I'm sure there are those who feel they can "multitask" with the TV on. There are also those who like to use the TV as a source of white noise in the background.

Well, I'm sorry. I still do not think it's a good idea to try to focus on something significant with a television buzzing in the background. Think about it. That box has been designed specifically to snag your attention and keep it. The lights, the colors and the sounds have all been optimized by marketers and program directors to constantly ply for your attention. That's going to be difficult for anyone to ignore.

Don't take the chance of letting the TV suck you in. Turn it off. If you need white noise, choose some unfamiliar music to play. You won't have the distracting visual clues of the TV and unfamiliar songs won't make you want to sing along. (This happens to me a lot! I now try to stick with background music that has no vocals.)

Beware the Internet Diversion

If you are working in a office, you are almost always aware of the people around you. Your office mates often walk through, stop by for a chat and are just nearby quite a bit. I believe this kind of attention keeps a person in check when it comes to internet diversion.

At the office, you may sometimes take a moment to watch a silly video on YouTube or catch up with some of the latest news or gossip that interests you. This is normal and as long as you aren't breaking any company policies, I really think it's okay. I can guarantee, however, if your co-workers are constantly seeing you distracted and not working, your going to hear about it one way or the other.

It's this slight consequence that helps keep you in check. Even in the type of office where internet breaks are no big deal, most people will get that quick jolt of "I should be working..." when the boss walks by and you're online searching for bargains on Craigslist.

Working at home does not provide this kind of consequence. If you clicked on that blog you're super interested in, (c'mon, you know the one) and you get sucked into a three hour surf session, there's no one there to remind you, "Hey, you should be working." That's all up to you now.

You have to stay aware of how much time you are spending on internet activities that aren't really productive.

Continue to Love Your Family by Keeping Them at Bay

If you are like me, you'll find that you have to work at home while your family is there as well. Sharing space like this can be difficult. You are trying to use the space for focused work and productivity. The family, however, is using it as the home that it is. You need a place where you can concentrate. They need a place where they can chill out, relax and enjoy the time.

Setting proper boundaries is key. In my home, I keep my work upstairs and give the family the downstairs. I try to set a fairly consistent amount of time for my work. They try to give me the time I need and I, in turn, try to make time for them. It's not always perfect mind you, but everyone is trying.

I also suggest having the kind of conversation with your family where you explain exactly what you are doing and why. I believe it has helped my kids to understand why I spend an hour or two alone in the evenings. They know I'm there to work and respect the situation. In turn, I try to appreciate our family time as just that: family time. Not take-calls-time or finish-up-a-project-time.

Certainly there are good days and bad. But I do believe that our set boundaries make it easier for everyone to get what they need.

These guides work well for me. If you adjust the specifics to your own life, I'm sure you will find success.

Benefits of Blogging and Niche Article Writing

I have recently experienced for myself the benefits of blogging. I had attended a number of webinars on the benefits of social blogging and decided it was time to take it seriously. Over the last month, I have posted to my blog at least four times a week. And I am seeing changes on Google.

Improve Your Google Search Engine Page Rank.

This was the first real proof that blogging pays. I was researching material for a new blog article. Guess what? I ranked #7 and 8 for that set of keywords. It just happened. I wasn't working toward that goal.

One of the reasons I think I experienced such quick results is the fact that the keyword phrase was also part of to my blog's name. At most two article titles used the keyword phrase, and neither title took first place in the results. The home page for my blog did.

But there was probably another factor at work that goes beyond the volume of blog posts I have been cranking out. My blog posts are also showing up elsewhere on the internet. EzineArticles.com allows me to publish my posts as articles. This has without doubt helped my primary website rankings. Going from so far down the search, I got tired of clicking "next" to finding my website to page #3 in a search for my primary keyword is an accomplishment. I actually have hopes of making page #1. Before I committed to writing for my blog, I never thought it was possible.

I've also added a tweet button to my blog pages (and the articles have that option as well). I try to tweet when the articles goes live. Retweets help to boost page rank.

Use Your Blog, Blog-derived Articles and Social Media.

What's the take-away message from this? You can improve your search engine page rankings in several ways through blogging, creating articles and using social media.

Through your blog and blog-derived articles, you nurture the impression that you are an expert in your niche. I have found that the very effort to find topics and researching them develops your expertise. It keeps you on the leading edge for your industry.
If you are publishing new material in your niche, Google will begin to take you seriously. Flood the internet with too much material all at once, and it can work against you. But a steady stream of valuable information will boost your blog, and your primary website.
Using social media is valuable, because Google and Bing both pay attention to what is being discussed on Twitter and Facebook. If you write a really good blog or article, and it gets tweeted, the website that article links back to is going to climb the SERP.

So consider putting on a blitz of blogging effort and related article posts. It really does pay for itself if you are looking to get your business noticed.

Mobile Local Fusion - Does It Work And Is It Worth Doing? A Case Study

Mobile Local Fusion by Laura Betterly and Ryan Deiss came across my desk in an email roughly about a month ago. Normally these types of emails get deleted but for some reason this one caught my eye and I opened it. Maybe it was because I have been looking for a new business opportunity to jump into. Maybe devine intervention as I was literally just contemplating a business move. Not really sure but there it was with it's catchy title in my in-box. The price point seemed fine - the guarantee was good so I plunked down my hard earned money. After reading all the material and watching all the videos in a couple of days I still was not completely convinced this would all work. It did sound pretty good on the surface though.

I decided to put it to the test on my own brick and mortar business - a hard surface cleaning company that I have owned and operated for more than twenty years. I really wanted to sell the business but things had been really slow so getting a good asking price was out of the question. My service was not coming up at all on the local Google searches and this is what Mobile Local Fusion is all about - getting to the top of Google local. I had competitors from as much as 30 miles away showing up but not me.

I started using the system immediately to try and get a boost. To my surprise my business showed up in the number 1 and 2 spots for my search terms in just 2 weeks! That alone was worth the price of the course for me. I have also started work on another case study - a Landscaper that is not even listed on the places page. That should be fun as I try and get him to the top.

Needless to say, I do not intend to ask for a refund of [http://www.squidoo.com/mobilelocalfusionreview]Mobile Local Fusion at anytime. You can [http://www.squidoo.com/mobilelocalfusionreview]Go Here to read my honest review of Mobile Local Fusion.

Pros And Cons Of Owning A Gift Basket Business At Home Vs Owning A Storefront Business

Is the joy of owning a gift basket business at home greater than the pleasure derived from operating a storefront gift basket business? I have been on both sides of the fence and can therefore give first hand advice and opinions about this debate. Whether you want to start a basket business from home or if you are considering having a storefront, read the following pros and cons to help make your final decision.

Pros to Having A Gift Basket Business At Home:
-You will work long hours during holidays but at least you can be home for meal time and any other important family occasion or a good television show you don`t want to miss.
-You make your own hours and work at your own rate. You can leave to pick up your son at school or to go to your daughter`s presentation at 2 on a Tuesday.
-You can work in your pajamas when putting baskets together
-You can do your own personal errands while shopping for fruit and treats
-You can deduct a part of your home expenses on your small business income taxes
-You decide how much business you want by how many calls or marketing efforts you put out

Cons to Having A Basket Business At Home:
-Sometimes it will seem that you are always working, especially during holidays.
-If you don`t have the space in your home or garage to operate your business out of, your private spaces may become overwhelmed with baskets, product, ribbon, etc..
-You will have constant distractions at home that may prevent you from efficiently running your business.
-Some people may not consider your business to be as legitimate and professional as a storefront business.

Pros to Having A Storefront Gift Basket Business:
-If you are social and love meeting new people, a storefront business will introduce you to many new people.
-If you enjoy being a boss and having a team of people working for you, a storefront business will be perfect for you
-If you love creating displays and beautifying areas, a storefront will give you that opportunity
-If you love organizing product and formal inventories, consider a storefront.
-If you enjoy the image of being a storefront owner, your store will fulfill that wish.

Cons to Having A Storefront Basket Business:
-You will work long hours during holidays and be away from home for long periods of time.
-Marketing salespeople and product salespeople will take up lots of your time.
-People asking for donations will take up much of your time.
-Sometimes you won`t have time to do the actual work of making the baskets because of time-consuming customers asking for a specific shade of ribbon on their gift delivery.
-You won`t be able to personally just pick up and go get fruits for the basket you need to deliver this afternoon unless you have someone to take care of the store.
-You will need to work within acceptable store hours every day of the year except for holidays and maybe Sundays.
-Having a storefront basket business costs more than a home based basket business because you need to maintain an acceptable inventory, you need employees and you have to pay rent and utilities.
