Is Getting Paid to Take Online Surveys Really a Viable Way to Make a Living?

The main thing to keep in mind about taking paid surveys is that the only reason they exist is to find out consumer opinion about products and services.  This means they are looking to hear from specific types of people that their products and services would generally market to, and to find out if there is a market to expand to.  In other words, you need to belong to the demographic group they are seeking opinions from in order to be considered for participation. Your demographic/personal profile information that survey companies consider include things like: age, gender, type of job, race, whether you have children or take prescription medicationt, etc.

While there are literally hundreds of surveys you could take in a month, the really high paying surveys are not consistent.  If you have a specific talent, job level or skill (or do something like regularly take prescription medications) you will be more likely to be asked to participate.  For example, if you are a stay at home mom that hasn't worked in awhile, they will not be paying you $150 for your opinion on what you look for in an IT technical computer service that you would use to help run a division of an nationwide business.  Instead, you would likely better qualify for the many  "mom" surveys available about products related to children, families, your hobbies   This isn't a bad thing, but my point is that not everyone can qualify for the higher paying focus groups. 

So, is taking surveys a viable way to make a living?  That all depends on you. The majority of the surveys available for the average person are generally giving compensation of between $1-$8, with some even lower.  This doesn't mean you have to take the bad paying surveys, however.  You can pick and choose.  Perhaps a better way to ask the question of whether or not you can make a living it is to consider what dollar amount "making a living" is to you.   If you ask that first, you will find that your answer will not necessarily be the same as the next persons.

Bottom line:  You can expect to average minimum wage or better for the surveys you take each month.  This means if it is a ten minute survey, the compensation would be about $1 or more.  This is just an an average, however, and it is only if you register for a lot of companies (so that you have enough surveys to choose from).  Some months will be better than others, but all in all it's a great way to earn extra income each month --  and not something you could count as a guaranteed income source. 

Can I make a living on just surveys? No, but maybe you can.
