Are You As Prepared For a Full-Time Home-Based Business As You Think?
I had worked a "job" all my life and once I discovered network marketing a few short years ago I couldn't wait until the day when I could walk away from a lifetime of being an employee and enter the full time world of entrepreneurship. It seemed to me that if I just spent more time doing what I was already doing to grow my business it should explode in no time an all. That day came a little over 6 months ago as I retired from my position with a municipal police force and began collecting my pension which would pay me 50% of my salary for life. It felt so good not to have to answer to anyone anymore and to be able to take control of my life and live by my own schedule. This was going to be great! I was in for a big surprise though, because what I did not seem to understand was that there is a huge difference between working a job where someone else decides what tasks you need to accomplish, and by when, and having to decide what you will do and when you will do it all on your own. I now had to carefully plan my day if I intended to be productive. It was necessary to organize my tasks and prioritize my activities. This sounds pretty easy but when you are working at home and the family is all around you, with all their daily comings and goings, and the dog needs your attention, or your kids need a ride somewhere, or your wife needs help with something; it can become a challenge. Ah, but I figured "what's the big deal? I have all day to get to these things, right?" I could schedule my duties around my life. I could do things when I wanted to and if I wanted to. Oh but I was so wrong! I had no idea how to properly structure my day in order to be as productive as I needed to be if I intended to make money. That's where the trouble began for me, because suddenly my plan for the business to just take off was not working exactly as I expected. Now I was tapping into my savings to keep up with the bills and every time I turned around there was some other expert out there telling me how I could grow my business better and faster. I was spinning my wheels and even worse than that I was exuding a desperate persona. Who was ever going to do business with a person who seemed desperate to make a sale so he could keep a roof over his head. That's when it hit me hard; I knew I had to slow down and focus and learn to value my time. Just like someone who wins the lottery has a difficult time disciplining themselves in spending money, a person who suddenly has all the time in the world to do what they want must also be careful not to fall into the trap of losing a sense of value for their time. Time is money, and it always has been. Take control of your time and you will control your money. Let time rule you and you will forever be a slave to your money. For me that meant the wise thing to do was to go out and pick up a job to create a second income, then I would not be reliant on my next sale to make my mortgage payment, and also I would have less time on my hands to manage. Once I took some of the pressure off of myself and began treating my off time as a precious commodity, I quickly began to take control of my time and leverage it better. I now work more efficiently and, believe it or not, I am able to accomplish just as much or more as I did when I had the whole day at my disposal. This may or may not sound familiar to you, but if it does you need to realize that when you spend your entire life working for someone else it's going to take some time and effort to become well versed at controlling all the aspects of your daily life when you decide to become an entrepreneur. So giveyourself some slack and don't let yourself get all stressed about it. You know what you need to do to grow your business, it's more a matter of learning to take control of your time and resources and to discipline yourself. If you do this consistently over time you will begin to create better daily work habits and eventually it will pay off. So if you are looking forward to working full time in your home-based business but you have never been in total control of your life because you have worked for others all your life, begin now structuring your day to be productive, then when you do go all into your business full-time, you will already have the right habits in place.Jim Marr is retired from law enforcement and presently resides in a shoreline community of Rhode Island.
