Reasons to Choose a General Or Legal Transcription Career Over a Medical Transcription Career

You've likely seen ads, heard commercials, or read fluff filled articles about how training for a career in medical transcription can help you create an instant career. Chances are you probably thought, "Hey, I wonder if I can do that." Let's clear up a few myths and misconceptions about medical transcription.

As a transcriptionist I've been asked this question more times than I can count.

Loretta, I would like to take a course on medical billing and/or coding or medical transcription so that I can work at home over the summer. Which course do you recommend? Also, is this work difficult and do many medical companies hire home workers for this?

These are my own personal opinions based on my business experiences and research I've done online. I am a general and legal transcriptionist, I've never personally trained, studied, or even attempted to do medical transcription and these are the reasons why.

The first thing to clear up is that a lot of times people confuse medical coding and billing with transcription. They are not the same thing, however there are many people in the field that do both billing and transcription work in the offices they work for.

Most of the programs that are offered online for this that promise work from home opportunities for medical billing and coding and medical transcription are a huge waste of time. You can always look at your local community college or find a doctor/hospital with an internship program if this something you are truly interested in. As a side note, small town doctor's offices are usually more willing to train someone new for doing their billing and/or transcription work than those in the bigger cities.

Most offices and hospitals will require you to work in house for at least a year in their billing department, sometimes 2 or more years, before allowing you to telecommute. The same goes for medical transcription. Security being the main reason for this. Think about the information you give your doctor... it would be completely irresponsible for them to hand that off to just anyone.

If your main goal is to work only from home, medical billing/coding/transcription is probably not the best path to take. While I realize that's not the advice or information anyone wants to hear, it's my honest opinion on the subject and something I tell people often.

To further elaborate on the amount of work at home jobs available in this field for those wondering...

I've personally been working from completely from home since 2001 and in that time I have been a member of so many work at home mom groups, forums, email lists, communities, message boards, and chat discussions that I lost count ages ago. I've met hundreds of work at home moms and entrepreneurs virtually and quite a few in person as well. In all that time, with all that networking, with all that chatting, I've only ever met ONE person that did medical billing or transcription from home, and she didn't even work 100% from home, she was in the office Monday and Thursday, and at home Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. It took her nearly five years to convince her boss of that arrangement.

I hope you found this information helpful. If there is anything I can do to help you further, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Medical Billing Home Business - Exposed to the Light

You have seen the ads for a medical billing home business. They are in newspapers, grocery store shoppers, and online. Many times these ads are displayed beside legitimate ads for jobs in the medical profession. This confuses people and makes them believe this is a real offer.

The ads usually go something like "Doctors and Hospitals can't find qualified workers in the Medical Billing Field. They are always looking for trained specialist to help them with the task of billing third parties. They want home based employees like you."

These ads promise you thousands of dollars a week for work you do in your spare time. Before you can begin making money, you have to buy the software and get training.

The advertisers will give you the software and the training you need. All for a modest fee, of course. This modest fee can run into thousands of dollars.

When you package arrives what you find is an outdated software package and inadequate training materials. You will also get a potential client list.

The list usually turns out to be a list of doctors in your area. Supposedly, they are interested in hiring people to work at home. In reality, most doctors and medical centers do their medical bill processing in house. The few that do outsource it use large, well established companies.

Another thing that these promoters fail to tell you is that despite their claim of "no experience required," you need training in the medical coding and other medical jargon. This will take several months of study. You also have to remain current on the laws involving Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurance companies.

Don't fall for this trap. Most of these scammers are not in business to help you. They are really just trying to sell a software package to you. Once they get their money from you, they are hard to get in touch with. It is also next to impossible to get your money back from them, even if they offered a money back guarantee.

Understand this. It is almost impossible to open up a business in the medical billing field without first working for a hospital, clinic, or doctor's office for a long time. You also need to have extensive training.

If you are seriously considering this career option, despite all my warnings, then do this first. Get on the phone and call several doctor's offices and hospitals in your area. Ask them if they will outsource their medical billing work to you. I can almost guarantee you I already know the answer to that question.

Medical Billing and Coding As a Data Entry Home Job

Medical billing and coding is a fast-popularizing occupation or profession for the computer savvy and detail-keen individuals. It could be a good data entry home job for anyone who intends to earn good income.

Are you looking for a prospective career path that would surely provide great compensation and enable you to manage your time well? Do you like the idea of being your own boss? Do you intend to work from home? Don't you like to spend tumultuous years of studying just to earn professional degrees and titles and make sure you will end up in a high-paying and worthwhile career? You should consider getting into medical billing and coding as a data entry home job.

The concept of medical billing and coding may be new to you, but it is in fact one of the fastest rising segments in the combined medical, insurance and IT sectors. Medical billing is a necessary procedure of submitting patients' medical claims to corresponding insurance companies, or to Medicare and the US federal government. The main purpose of the process is to obtain payment for the services rendered by healthcare providers and hospitals. Medical bill professionals are regarded more as billing specialists who manage patients' accounts, submit claims and file and access electronic records using financial software.

Medical coding, on the other hand, involves applying specific codes to diseases or injuries. When patients undergo medical procedures or are confined in hospitals, medical coders are responsible for filing their claims using pre-set codes to make billing easier and more systematic. Medical billing and coding therefore was born out of the need for professionals who would do the tedious and systematic work of filing, assessing and processing medical claims of covered patients from their health insurances or from Medicare. Hospitals and healthcare facilities are acknowledging their needs for such professionals, especially these days when almost all conventional processes could be done electronically.

As the US' healthcare system and regulations further become more rigid, complex and competitive, medical billing and coding is expected to continue emerging as one of the most popular modern occupations. More and more people are aiming to get into this emerging sector because of the high pay. Based on current estimates, a medical billing and coding professional could receive annual compensation of between $31,000 and $41,000. Daily work hours could also be flexible. It could be a lucrative data entry home job for professionals who dislike traditional employment opportunities.

Most medical billers and coders today exist as home-based and startup businesses. Such ventures offer medical reimbursement services to small clinics and doctors. Such professionals work independently in secluded offices without full involvement, contact and relations to hospitals, healthcare providers, insurers and Medicare. Thus, they are most suitable for people who are looking for a data entry home job.

What's more? You do not need to earn degrees and diplomas just to become a medical billing and coding professional. There are online certification programs for medical billing and coding. Most learning schemes are conducted and facilitated online, with simple and practical computer and filing curriculum that could be conveniently completed by anyone for about 18 months. If you think you have a strong eye for details and if you intend to enjoy a data entry home job, you may start getting the necessary certification and become a medical billing and coding professional.

Eliminating Clutter As a Marketing Strategy? You Bet!

If you read the title and think I'm crazy, I hope to convince you otherwise. Eliminating clutter and organizing your workspace can be a marketing strategy.

Look at your desktop. What do you see? Stacks of file folders? Books opened to random pages? Scraps of paper on which you've written names of potential clients? Ah-ha! I thought so. I'll be the first to admit that my desktop isn't always free of clutter, but I do agree that it's important to maintain a list of current clients as well as potential client contacts in an easily accessible location.

Start with a clean slate. Remove everything from your desktop. Toss what you don't need, put everything else into a labeled folder or back on the bookshelf. Don't you feel better already?

Next, create a folder (paper or electronic, your preference) into which you list current clients' names and contact information. An Excel spreadsheet works well for this. Add a notation about when you last spoke with them. Has it been more than a month? If so, plan to send them an email within the next 7 days to touch base and ask if they have any need for your services. Do this on a rotating basis so you are always reaching out to former clients.

Create a second folder with names and contact information for potential clients. Now, compose and send each new contact an email introducing yourself, highlighting your skills and areas of expertise, and inquiring about the potential for freelance work. Document on your spreadsheet the date you sent out each query. If you receive a response asking for additional information, reply back as quickly as possible. Don't let days or weeks go by without sending a reply. Make sure to document the dates when you send subsequent emails. Each time you learn of a new potential client, add the name to your database and throw away the scraps of paper.

Frequently Asked Questions About a Medical Transcriptionist Salary - Well Paid Or Not?

If you have considered becoming a medical transcriptionist then you may be wondering exactly how much money you can make in this field. A medical transcriptionist salary depends upon a few different factors, and here are the most frequently asked questions about the income potential.

1. If I work in an office how much can I make?

Medical transcriptionists that work for an employer make an average of $33,000 to $40,500 on a yearly basis. This is the average for a full-time employee working for a company such as a hospital or a medical transcription company. MTs that secure their own accounts and work from home full-time generally make well over $50,00 per year, and even more if they hire their own subcontractors.

2. Can I work part time?

Most companies that hire medical transcriptionists only offer full-time positions. There are some that hire part-time, they are just harder to find. If for some reason you cannot work full-time, you can always work at home as a self-employed transcriptionist.

3. How much can I make if I work at home?

This really depends. You can set your own income level working at home and take on as many clients as you want. Obviously the amount of hours you put into your business will reflect the amount of income you can make. Once you have set up a business and have enough clients to work full-time hours, you can expect to make a very decent income.

4. Can I start my own company?

Yes you can, and many medical transcriptionists that work at home end up getting too much work and need to outsource some of their projects. If you can find enough clients, you can hire many medical transcriptionists and build up your own company.

5. Will I be entitled to benefits?

Many of the companies that hire medical transcriptionists offer benefits to their employees. You may be entitled to medical insurance, dental insurance and a range of other benefits. If you work at home for yourself with you own accounts, you will not have access to these, but you will have incredible tax savings that you would not get as an employee. For instance, health care premiums are 100% tax deductible. There are many benefits to working at home as a self-employed person.

These are the most frequently asked questions about a medical transcriptionist salary. As you can see, it is definitely worth your time to look into this career opportunity. It usually takes less than a year to become professionally trained in the field, and once you have your training you can start work immediately. Medical Transcription Training For a Home Medical Transcription Business Or Office Job

Medical transcription training is one of the courses that have seen growing popularity. While it is great for you to begin by first working in a formal office environment before transitioning to working from home, there are opportunities that allow you to move straight from the class to working from home.

Medical transcription training courses involve not only developing and improving word processing skills but also very crucially teach the medical jargon, vocabulary and knowledge required to become efficient at quickly transcribing what is being said by a doctor or nurse. The technical nature of MT makes it distinct from ordinary transcription where anyone who understands the language in general can do. You also learn to use special transcribing software that allow you to slow down the speed of the audio or video recording in order to capture the words.

Medical transcription training courses are offered online as well as in instructor led classroom sessions in a number of tertiary education institutions. Whereas a number of people opt to try to learn the skills on the job by taking up an entry level MT job, the better approach is enrolling for training first before joining the job market. This is both if you are looking at office or work at home medical transcription.

Other than the training itself, the course materials that you purchase or receive as part of the coursework serve as a resource that you can keep with you long after you are through with the actual course. Once you have been equipped with the requisite skills through the transcription training, you are ready to work in a hospital, a doctors office, or even a senior care facility. The average wage for an entry-level medical transcription position varies but is usually in the range of $8 - $12. After having worked in the industry for about two years experience, the average pay usually goes up to about $20 per hour.

One of the great advantages of this line of work is that regardless of the state of the economy, medical care is an essential human need. This in effect means that there will always be a need for transcriptionists as doctors scarcely have the time to document their recordings in the emergency room for instance as opposed to focusing on their core role which is treating patients. After working in an office environment for a while and have gathered both the requisite experience and the trust of your employer(s), you can then opt for work at home medical transcription.

The advantage of home medical transcription is that you can offer the service to more than one institution or doctor. In order to do so, you must approach it just as one would any small business idea. In other words, medical transcription training must be combined with good business sense. Develop a business plan to better organize your short, medium, and long-term goals. Aim to retain your existing client (say from the place you used to work) while looking for new clients. Be careful that you do not jeopardize your old clients by taking on more business than you can handle.

Medical Billing Work at Home Jobs

This is a sector of scamming that needs to be looked at carefully, because unlike some other scams (such as stuffing envelopes for example) some medical billing companies are legitimate.

So how do you spot the scams and how do they work?

There are plenty of websites online that promote this type of scam, and while they may look very glossy there is one essential factor that makes them stand out a mile. They will always ask for a one off fee to reveal all the secrets of making thousands of dollars from medical billing each and every year.

Sometimes the adverts or website will ask you to call a number to find out more. In this way the ad of website will not ask you for any money directly. Some people who would otherwise not get scammed end up falling for this because they end up getting caught in a conversation on the phone. It can be very difficult to say no to someone and yet you always have the power to put the phone down.

In most cases the scam works by asking people to purchase additional equipment, lists of names, software and training manuals in order to get started. If the company is genuine you won't need any of this - and you certainly won't need to pay them to get started. Always watch for the fee that is required in order to let you into the website or give you everything you need to make an easy income. If there is a fee, you can be sure you are looking at a scam.

In many cases if materials like this are even supplied they will be inferior, useless or no longer used. Lists of potential clients are likely to be out of date as well. Some medical billing scams even ask people who join to pay several sums of money in order to get started. It starts with the initial sum and then the carrot is always just out of reach, because before you can start earning thousands of dollars you will need just one more thing.

As you can see it is easy enough to separate the scams from the genuine opportunities. Always research medical billing companies and those offering work before you join. And never pay a fee to do so. If you stick by these rules you will never get caught in the spiral of medical billing scams that abound today.

Next, learn how to cut through the hype and finally make an [http://lastaffiliatestanding.com]extra income online.

Online Transcription Service Providers in High Demand

Gone are the days of the Dictaphone and the secretary writing furiously in shorthand while her boss talks. Transcribing audio to paper is still a much-needed service in a number of industries. However, today, over half of transcription services in North America take place via the Internet rather than in the boss's office. This means that online transcription service providers are in great demand.

Transcription service providers (or transcriptionists) listen to audio recordings and transcribe the words on the recording to paper (or computer file). In order to be able to do this type of work, you must:

* Have a computer with Internet access. Clients deliver their audio files to the transcriptionist via email.

* Have software capable of playing audio files on your computer. This kind of software is readily available and inexpensive. Many home computers come with audio-player software already installed. Check your computer's owner's manual if you are unsure.

* Have excellent listening skills. You'll have to be able to listen carefully to hours of audio recordings without missing anything.

* Have good typing skills (80-95 words per minute). The faster you can type, the more money you can make.

* Be able to work with precision and attention to detail. Official transcriptions must be completely accurate. That is, they must contain every single word on the audio file.

Many different kinds of industries rely on online transcription service providers to transcribe various audio recordings to paper (or computer file). The sectors that most commonly rely on these services are medical (doctors), dental (dentists) and educational (teachers, professors) professionals.

These professionals often do a lot of talking with clients, students, patients and other professionals and must have paper records of these conversations, lectures, orders, etc for their official records. Rather than employ someone in-house to do transcription work (which is often not cost-efficient), many turn to online transcription services.

Online transcription service providers usually charge fees based upon either number of transcribed pages or number of words. Transcriptionists can usually make between 15 and 25 dollars per hour for quality, accurate work.

If you think you possess the qualities mentioned, you can probably start a successful online transcription service from your home. You may want to think about what type of transcribing you'd like to do: medical, dental, educational or other. Many online transcription services cater to one particular sector. Others do all kinds of transcription work.

In addition to the qualifications already discussed, it's important that you familiarize yourself with medical and dental terminology if you plan on working with these industries. Medical and dental terminology isn't in most people's everyday vocabulary. However, these kinds of words will pop up all the time in transcription work, and clients who hire online transcription service providers expect 100 percent accuracy. Get a medical/dental dictionary and study it, especially when you run across a term that you aren't familiar with. If you happen to know a doctor/dentist you feel comfortable approaching for help now and then this can increase your efficiency tremendously.
