Make Your Own Gold and Silver Jewellery

To begin, it is probably best to outline the traditional way of making an item of jewellery.

There are hundreds of designers around and hundreds more very skilled artisans whose workmanship is so good that it would take you and I many years to acquire their knowledge and techniques.

They use precision tools and laboriously work the metal to create their masterpieces. You can do that too, using sheet metal and wire. Many local communities run jewellery courses where you can learn all the basics.

You would learn to cut sheet, use needle files to refine the surface and edges, planish surfaces with a hammer, solder components together and a variety of other techniques. In essence, you would become a silversmith or goldsmith over a period of time.

Many of these items would be one-offs but others would become MASTER patterns from which subsequent reproductions would be cast.

In order to make replicas one first needs to make a mould of the master. This is normally a two part rubber sandwich, which is vulcanised around the master.

Wax is then injected into the rubber mould to create wax replicas of the master. The purpose, of course, is that you can make as many reproductions of your original piece as you want.

The waxes are then mounted onto a wax core using a miniature soldering iron. This forms a "tree". The tree is then placed inside a metal flask and sealed, apart from the top. Investment slurry poured into the flask and allowed to "set". The rubber base that sealed the bottom of the flask is removed and it is put into an oven where the wax is melted out.

Over a period of around 12 hours the flask heated to about 1400 degrees centigrade, cooled a little, and then transferred from the oven to the casting machine. The gold or silver is then melted and cast into the flask. This is often done under a vacuum to ensure complete filling of the mould cavities.

After cooling for a few minutes the flask is then "quenched" in water and most of the investment around the cast metal items falls away, leaving a tree of metal that was once the wax tree. This investment mould can only be used once, hence the derived term "lost wax process".

The metal items on the tree are then snipped off, fettled to remove surplus metal and polished to produce a beautiful piece of jewellery.

BUT, there is another way to make one-off pieces of your own.

It still involves using the lost wax process above but, instead of making a metal master and then a mould, you would create your masterpiece in WAX.

The great thing about this is that jewellers wax is flexible, malleable, carvable and easy to work with. If you make a mistake you can fill it or you can carve away more wax. The possibilities are endless.

Having made your wax model all you now need to do is get someone to cast it for you. That is unless you want to invest many thousands of pounds or dollars in casting equipment.

There are many firms that will do casting for you in most metals. You will have to pay a casting charge and the value of the metal used. This would provide you with a "raw" casting that would still look pretty ugly in its unfinished state. So you would then decide if you wanted to fettle and polish the item or get the caster to do it for you at extra cost.

Whatever you do there is a good chance that your unique piece of jewellery will have cost you a bit less than you might have paid in the high street.

Make Money Selling Trash

I know, it is not glamorous but it is getting me through my hard times in this economy. There are two ways to look at trash. Lets explore them both.

The first is "recycle". The scrap metal business is huge. Scrap iron, copper, brass, aluminum, and much more!

The second is "resale". People put out all kinds of usable stuff. Furniture, toys, lawn equipment, and much more!

Here are some things that help in the beginning to get prepared. A truck or trailer ( I did this in my car but limits space) helps. Know the heavy pickup days for trash in the neighborhoods around you. Having a good set of gloves. Find a scrap metal recycling center close to you. Know where you can have a garage sale.

Recycling is one of my favorites. I only hold my scrap for a day and then sell it to the scrap yard the next day. I collect appliances, bed frames, ceiling fans, metal futons,etc.. I pull the copper wire out when it is easy to do because its worth more. I will cover that in another article. Just for scrap mixed metal you get about $6.00 for a 100 pounds. Does not sound like much but it is easy to get a 100 pounds of scrap. For example; a refrigerator, washer, microwave, futon, hot water heater, and five bikes weigh about 800 pounds. That is $48.00 tax free!

Resale is great also. While your looking around pick up anything that can be reused. Clean it up a little save it up for a month and have a garage sale. I make at least $300 every time I have one.

Donate what does not sale. Go get new inventory!

Working From Home Compared to Running a Retail Convenience Store

Working from home has a lot of benefits, especially when I compare it to our (my girlfriend and I) Country Store business. Here are some of the cons that we have running a retail brick and mortar business.

The first con is you have to have employees. It is hard to find people you can trust. I have had some major problems with employees over the years. Stealing is the biggest problem. Another problem with employees is when they call in; we have to be there. That means staying close by, no vacations for us.

Another con to have a retail store is sales taxes. If you accept EBT, (aka Food Stamps), if you have the Lottery, and if you sale gas, it is a bunch of paper work. I finally hired an accountant to take care of it for me every month.

Another con is robberies. My store has been robbed 4 times at gunpoint. My girlfriend was working one night, and our daughter was working on another night. The other employees of course quit right after they got robbed, which I cannot blame them. In fact, our daughter quit, too. She was only working at our store until she found another job. We did not want her down there, but she needed the money.

Another con is dealing with DHEC (Department of Health and Environmental Control). Some of DHEC's rules make no sense. For example, our store is a metal building. We decided to insulate and use the metal inside for our walls instead of sheet rock. It would be a lot easier to clean don't you think. Well they made us put sheet rock up around the mop sink and other places, saying you have to be able to clean it soap and water and a rag. Seems to me you can use that on metal.

We have had problems with drug dealers wanting to sell their drugs in our parking lot. It took us a while to clean it up, but every once in a while someone will try to park over to the side and make a deal. The last one we caught was trying to sell to a 16 year old. Needless to say, he found out we do not play.

Our store is out in the country. It is best for us to buy things at Wal-Mart, grocery stores, and the dollar store to resell it. We have some vendors that we buy from, but when it comes to grocery products we can get it a lot cheaper getting ourselves. That being said, it is another con to owning the business. It is a chore to go shopping for $500 - $1000 worth of product. It is a lot to price, and it is a lot of work.

That brings me to the conclusion. Having a home-based business is wonderful. I do not worry about sales taxes. I do not have to worry about employees, getting robbed, or anything like that. Plus, the tax write offs are great. Believe me when I tell you, "You can live a stress free life if you have a successful online business." I should know I am an affiliate marketer and social media marketing consultant, now.

Get online and conquer the internet through self syndication and tribe syndication, and leave that stress behind.

Playing Metal Slug - How This Applies to Your Home Based Business

I am sure most of you have heard of this game Metal Slug. It is a series of video games first released on arcade machines and game consoles from the company SNK. In this game, there is an 'infinite' number of enemies which you have to kill. You will only accomplish a mission when you 'kill' the 'king'. As a player, you can make use of powerful weapons such as machine guns, missile launchers and grenades. I was playing this game on PSP the other day and somehow this game gave me a few ideas on building a successful home-based business. We shall see how the Metal Slug game is related to your business.

1. Look before you leap. In the game, you need to jump over obstacles and enemies' fire. You need to look before you jump recklessly. There were times I simply jumped blindly. This has resulted in my 'deaths'. Same goes for your internet business. Before you actually join a business, you need to do some research. Is it a scam? Is it too good to be true? If you jump in without doing any research, you might end up losing more time and money.

2. Haste makes waste. The faster I try to complete the game, the easier I 'die'. I grew impatient at times and just want to kill off the enemies as quickly as possible. Building an online business is the same. A successful business takes time and patience to nurture. Trying to rush things will only shadow your marketing efforts.
